This is incorrect. NASCAR’s ratings peaked in the mid-2000s when 2pm or later starts were the norm.

They went to 1pm starts one year and ratings actually went down.

Which season are you referencing?

I am looking at 2005 and the races on tracks without lights tended to start at 2pm at the latest. We had more night races back then, which skews the numbers.

Bingo. It’s literally common knowledge that instability builds during the day leading to thunderstorms in the afternoon. 1 PM starts can help dodge that for sure

We have to start every race no earlier than 3:30 ET so the West Coast can watch the rain delays too.

It shows that earlier start times aren’t necessarily a hindrance.

The networks think earlier starts are a hinderance to their profitability. Growing NASCAR's fan base isn't their problem.

Yeah track conditions are what racing in the rain are all about. Mistakes are when drivers over estimate track conditions and don't slow down. IMO.
