Southern 500 Darlington Speedway

I watched qualifying like a week or two ago I guess for the first time since the change took place. I never thought I’d be confused watching qualifying, but I was. The final round, cars kept qualifying, but the front row spot was left open until the final car qualified. Still confused how it works. 🤦‍♂️
 
Each race’s 36-plus entrants will continue to be split into two groups for time-trial qualification, with the fastest five drivers from each group advancing to the pole round and setting the top 10 starting positions for the main event. That hasn’t changed. What will change is the manner in which positions 11-40 are determined.


Previously, the cars that finished outside the top five in the two groups were seeded 11-40 based on their fastest qualifying lap, regardless of which group the drivers were in.


Beginning in 2024 — and with the exception of the Daytona 500, which has its own unique qualifying procedure — cars that do not advance from Group A will determine the outside row for starting positions 11-40, while the remaining cars from Group B will determine the inside row.

I would call it more of a mild surprise.
The talent is there to get the best out of the equipment. I think his maturity will improve and he will win a lot in the future.

Scroll up to post 54 and look at the times. They are not according to the best time order.

I don’t get the recent hard on nascar fans and drivers have for F1. Each racing series is its own discipline and enjoyed better through that lens. The emerging tribalism is kind of stupid imo

Taking a closer look at the lineup based upon the results of qualifying.

The two fastest cars in Qualifying Round 2 have been assigned the pole position and the outside pole.

The fastest cars in Qualifying Round 2, that came from Qualifying Round 1A, are lined up on the outside.

The fastest cars in Qualifying Round 2, that came from Qualifying Round 1B, are lined up on the inside.

It appears to be an attempt to somehow even out the differences in track conditions between Round 1A and Round 1B.

RF NASCAR Fam! Back for the Lady in Black! Hope everyone is in good spirits here on Labor Day weekend, sorry that I’ve been away for so long but you gotta do what you gotta do to take care of yourself right? Darlington will always be one of my favorite race’s if not for the challenge of the track alone, and the famous Darlington stripe, if you don’t got one you weren’t driving hard enough lol. Gawd I LOVE NASCAR FOR LIFE, there’s nothing else like it.

 
Sad I’m not there in person like I was last year. Hoping for a similar quality race and a similar result… a Hendrick win.

Welcome back @Turtle84! My first Winston Cup large speedway event in person was as a young 13 YO going to The Rebel 500. I rode there in a car driven by Ned Jarrett; I was his guest as he went to do the radio broadcast. Great man and great family from my hometown. Sat by myself on the backstretch and couldn’t believe the speed. Saw a win by the Silver Fox in his Purolator Mercury #21. I had been to my first Cup race at Hickory Motor Speedway in 1970, but this was a taste of a big track. Darlington is about as historic as you can get, and the Labor Day tradition is as sweet tea Southern as they come!

Wow! What a great race weekend. I watched qualifying in all different types of racing series on Friday and Saturday. A Xfinity race on Saturday. F-1 this morning, Indy car right now, NASCAR, later today...and the US Nationals NHRA drag race tomorrow. Throw in all of the great food and drink and I may experience excitement overload before this Labor Day weekend is over. :D
 
Hickory chunks are soaking, russet potatoes are soaking, fresh peanut oil in the pro fryer, tri-tip is marinated, dried off and dry rubbed...⏳
