Hurricane Season 2024

We got less than an inch of rain, most of it Thursday afternoon. We'll be detouring around PTC8 road damage for several more weeks. Kudos to NCDOT and Brunswick County Sheriff's department for work they've already accomplished.

I've driven that stretch more tines than I can count over the decades. It's just upstream from Newport TN and its failed dam, and a few miles from that flooded hospital.

Side note: this is going to complicate returning to Charlotte for the race haulers. May have to go through WV.
 
Still waiting for confirmation about East side of 40 being closed near Tenn/NC line, either due to mudslide or possible roadway wash out. It's my understanding mudslide is confirmed but pictures of washout make be fake. Highway dept has not responded to requests for info.

Can’t believe that parts of the US were just devastated by a hurricane, now we’re already talking about another one. Milton looks like it’s going to intensify very quickly. May weaken slightly before making landfall, but still looks to be a major hurricane. ☹️
 
Looked at projections and the direction Milton is taking. Decided Sunday evening to leave and got last two seats on flight to Charlotte and stay with family in Mooresville. Just received text and email notice from Sarasota County mandating evacuation of entire area where our home is. Some places close by still reeling from last hurricane.

Sitting in North Carolina listening to helicopters fly over house every half hour or so taking relief supplies to North Carolina mountains and considering how fortunate we are to have resources that allow us to leave and family to accommodate us when these situations occur.
 
If you're in Florida, don't be fooled by the forecast calling for it to weaken down to a Cat. 3 before landfall.

The storm surge is always the most devastating part of these storms, and that storm surge is going to remain at a Cat. 5 level despite weakening.

Florence in 2018 weakened from a 4 to a 1 before landfall, but it still carried Cat. 4 storm surge levels when it hit North Carolina.

Also Katrina and Rita from 2005, both of them were Cat 5s that weakened to Cat 3s at landfall but the storm surge from both did Cat 5 damage.

They're working on overhauling the rating system so it's based on more than just wind speed.

It’s wild that we are about to have Milton not even two weeks removed from Helene, which was a Katrina level catastrophe.

There was talk about that after Hurricane Florence.

The storm surge is THE biggest threat from hurricanes.

If a cat 4 or 5 is coming for me, or I see Jim Cantore walking around town, my ass is leaving town faster than a nitro funny car.

If you're on the coast, yes. It was no factor in Helene's inland damage, or in what we got here from PTC8 last month, or what we've had here in the Carolinas several times in the last decade. That was all drenching rain.

I'm at the point where I'm not going to stick around for even a CAT 1 anymore. My part of the county was one lane of asphalt away from being cut off last month. I have the resources to un-ass the area, and I'm not afraid to use them. 🚙

 
Regarding Helene, wasn't the damage in the mountains due to a combination of Helene and a storm system that was already in place and already affecting the region? I mean, it was raining in Western North Carolina and Eastern Tennessee long before Helene even made landfall. Obviously Helene added to the problems and it's probably irrelevant anyway, but I don't think it was solely Helene that caused the flooding. It's crazy, but from keeping up with the radar, it looked like it was constant rain in the mountains for at least 48 straight hours. You just don't see that happen very often.

Again, there won't be anything unique to him in that respect. That's just luck of the storm path.

There are plenty of legitimate reasons to criticize him that don't also apply to other rich folks on the southeastern side of FL. If you want some that relate to tropical storms, there are his lies regarding the response to Helene.
