WNBA

I’m so happy for Kate Money Martin.
Dude, she's actually gonna get to play. I'm happy for all of these ladies for that reason. This is a big opportunity for them.

I'll be following the Valkyries for sure, even if it means I end up following four teams. I don't care. I'll make it work.

The Sun have a new head coach and GM, Rachid Meziane and Morgan Tuck, respectively. Rachid is a successful international/European coach. Morgan, who played for for the Sun and won a championship with the Storm, has been promoted from assistant GM.

TIME Magazine has named our girl Caitlin Clark as Athlete of the Year.

Not how you've been sounding.

The league has been on the rise for a while, just glad to see the ladies getting their just due:

And The W still woulnd't be mainstream if not for Caitlin Clark.

She brought a ton of eyeballs to the sport, which has been good for the entire league. Hell, because Caitlin Clark brought me here, I've found myself truly enjoying the women's game a lot more than the men's game. I hated basketball until I watched Caitlin play.

The only names I knew before I started watching this were Britney Griner and Sabrina Ionescu.

Like I've said before, the W has been on a steady upswing since COVID and has exploded with the arrival of Caitlin and Angel. New folks generally show up for one of those two and then learn of other phenomenal players like A'ja, Phee, Sab, Stewie, Britney, etc. I expect the upward trend to continue moving forward, once Paige, JuJu, and others arrive.

We already have one new expansion team starting next year, two more on the way shortly, and plenty of other cities talking and thinking about it. The future is bright for this league, and I'm here for it.

Hannah Hidalgo too. One hell of a talent right there who's starting to steal the spotlight from JuJu a little bit the same way America's Girl stole the spotlight from Paige Bueckers.

I can't wait for Paige Bueckers to enter the W.

I obviously don't watch college, but Hannah is described via a quick Google search as a defensive floor general. That's my kind of point guard. Let's go. ^_^

Unrelated, but I agree completely with your earlier comment about the women's vs. the men's game. I never thought I would see the day when I knew more current WNBA players' names than current NBA players' names. That's wild. It definitely used to be the other way around.

So true. Sue Bird hits it on the nose.
“The fire was there, but Caitlin came, and she poured gasoline all over that thing,” Sue Bird said in praise of Caitlin Clark. The WNBA Rookie of the Year receiving the TIME Athlete of the Year award has raised all kinds of heckles around the league. But retired player Bird was and remains a CC fan. Rather, she remains a fan of the sport she played for 19 years as a pro and the league she played it in.

I've noticed that the sports media collectively now says, whenever referring to the rise in popularity, "Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese." Either that, or they say it's the "Angel Reese Effect."

ESPN especially needs to do some house cleaning.

And I wonder why Shelia Johnson isn't upset about A'ja Wilson winning SI Player of the Year and how it's wrong to single one athlete out when it's the whole league.

This made me smile when I saw it in the store the other day. I would have bought a box if they were gluten-free. ^_^

She's leaner for sure.

When Caitlin Clark is the floor general, the offense has to be prepared to move fast and it looks like that's exactly what Stephanie White is going to embrace. You have to be quick and always be prepared for Caitlin to pass, even if she's got her back turned to you.

All of the open WNBA head coaching spots have been filled. The Wings have hired Chris Koclanes, who was on GM Curt Miller's staff in Connecticut from 2016-2022 and was also an assistant at USC. The Mystics have hired Sydney Johnson, whose face I recognize - he was one of the Sky's assistant coaches last year and has spent the last several years with USA Basketball as a men's 3x3 coach.
