Silly Season 2025

Mike Wallace is 65. The fact that he thought it was a good idea to come out of retirement and run the 500 is puzzling to say the least. And that he actually found a ride is even crazier.

I wouldn't be comfortable with age 55 Mike Wallace. I think Sawyer made the right call. He'd be a weapon out there, who told him that it was a good idea?!? Castroneves is way younger; the comparison is silly.

I"ll remind you that James Hylton was allowed to attempt to qualify for the 2007 Daytona 500 at age 73 and after having not run a Cup race since 1993, and in between only making field filler starts in ARCA, Xfinity, and trucks. By the way, James did a great job, was a threat to nobody, and was an ill timed caution late in his qualifying race away from making the 500. You won't convince me that a 65 year old Mike Wallace with far more recent relevant experience couldn't do at least as well.

And a 72 year old Morgan Shepherd did this while 15 laps down despite driving regularly the whole time.

So yeah I'm gonna trust NASCAR's judgement and agree with them that a 65 year old driver with no oval races in a decade in a car he has never driven with a team who's ceiling would be 2 laps down and DNQ in a duel doesn't need to be out there. No one actually cares if Mike Wallace drives or not people are just taking their usual shots unnecessary shots at NASCAR. Go ahrlead laugh all you want because I don't care about whatever bad justification you make.

So, I opened this thread, and this was the first post I saw. With no context I misread figure from “fighter” and totally thought you guys were saying Carl Long is Batman until I went back and read.
Okay, now I'm frantically trying to figure out how we can get the Batmobile as a G56 entry at LeMans.

It's not NASCAR's job to determine how fast an entry will be or where it will finish. Its job is to determine if a driver has the qualifications to be there. I would contend Wallace's body of work should make him eligible. I will also say that I could careless either way, but I get tired of these out of left field judgement calls that NASCAR loves to make. If you want to restrict driver eligibility, put in writing, and enforce it EQUALLY. Looking right at YOU Helio.

The Batmobile from my childhood will suffice.

I've no clue why Long chose Wallace, there are numerous better and younger driver out there.
I'm gonna say this though, the only way Wallace would be a danger to others out there is while getting lapped, he wouldn't be causing any trouble in the pack because there's no way he'd stay with the draft.
With no superspeedway races in 10+ years, some concerns are legitimate. I think he should be required to run the ARCA race like Helio.

I don't think Wallace not being approved is a major issue though. Let's not pretend anyone would have tuned in because of him.

On the other hand, plate tracks require pretty quick reflexes and one bad move can trigger a 20 car accident at very high speeds.

Maybe there should be an objective test that drivers over a certain age have to pass but NASCAR isn’t wrong here.

Including a thorough medical examination with a heart function focus.

The man is 65 years old, overweight and self-admittedly out of shape. Take a lawn chair up to the spotter’s stand, Mike … you’ll do the team more good up there.

I’m happy to see JR Motorsports in the 500 but not a big fan of #40 but I guess any other numbers with ties to Junior are tied up right now.

81 seems like it have made more sense, but I'm sure there is a reason.

Qualifications and The Duels are shaping up to be some must watch TV for the first time in a while. You'd assume we're gonna hear something for MTJ and Jimmie soon. You got them two plus Helio, and then JRM making its Cup Debut what a fun Speedweek its going to be.
