33 Years Ago Today, An End of an Era

Can't remember if it was the last race, but we attended one of the last races at Richmond before they tore down / reconfigured the track. For the Cup race we sat in temporary aluminum bleachers outside the first turn (that area is part of the track now). It was wild - back then the fast cars...

New "what are you listening to thread"

Today, a bunch of old REO Speedwagon albums. "Wheels Are Turning", "Hi Infidelity", "Good Trouble", "A Decade of Rock and Roll"... maybe more if the wife continues to allow me to play hooky... good thing she likes it too.

    Future of NC short tracks

Well, thanks, but I'm not going to sign up for Facebook and get into all of that mess. That's why I asked if it was individuals posting about what's going on at 311, instead of an official track account.

    Future of NC short tracks

I know it's a typical race night for 311, although the weather looks a little iffy. But where are you seeing these posts about 311? Are they on individual accounts (no officially 311 track accounts)?

    Future of NC short tracks

Hadn't seen any news articles about 311, not even race results posted, since Fulp claimed he was quitting social media. He shut down the track website, and its Facebook page (and his old Twitter account) hadn't been updated in months (as of about three weeks ago, which was the last time I...

    Future of NC short tracks

Here's what I've been able to find out about what's going on for other NC venues: The governor said he plans to allow a capacity of 7% for large venues with a seating capacity of more than 10,000, effective Oct. 2. (He's talking about outdoor venues here.) Big tracks like the Charlotte Motor...

    Are the drivers athletes?

Sorry, the operative words there were "used to". Mothballed all my stuff after my health went sour a few years ago. There are a bunch of tracks in WV - you might sweet talk your way into a local car's seat for a trial... but you'll have to lose the "prove your worthiness to me" attitude if you...

    Are the drivers athletes?

In my experience, too many people who opine that race drivers are not athletes are people who have never driven a race car in a race. They assume that it's pretty much the same as driving their street car on the highway, only maybe a little faster. Maybe those of us who still have access to...

Interesting read on Days of thunder behind the scenes

Oops, his last name was Nabors.

Interesting read on Days of thunder behind the scenes

"Days of Thunder" was a hodgepodge of stories out of many different racer's lives, some stereotyped racing versions of urban legends, and an off-tangent love interest (necessary for most Hollywood movies), all squeezed into less than two hours. It was more of an attempt to appeal to the general...

    All star race to bristol

LOL... that might be painful to see... When they did a restart lane choice at Charlotte (back when we were running Legends cars) they would have a guy standing inside the first turn holding up a big sign that said "CHOOSE" - kind-of like a girl at a boxing match who prances around with a sign...

What is your favorite thing to see in a race?

IF you've got strong fenders... rubbin' can be flippin' in open wheel classes...

Interesting read on Days of thunder behind the scenes

LOL, I had to answer a lot of silly questions (from non-racing friends) after they watched - and believed - what went on in "Days of Thunder"...

What is your favorite thing to see in a race?

I like lots of on-track back-and-forth passing. Don't mind some rubbin' and bangin' as long as it doesn't wreck anybody... although I do tolerate payback (as long as nobody ends up in the hospital or the morgue).

    Engine Wear Questions

Typically all teams bring a backup car, and the well sponsored teams "back car" is as good as its "primary car". But they have to start in the rear (of the second race) if they change cars. In such a long race, not sure that's much of a penalty.

    Engine Wear Questions

It is a lot of racing on one engine in a short time, but today's engines can take it. And as Marcingak pointed out, there won't be practice and qualifying laps on them. The lower budget teams could be impacted - the ones that rent used engines (depending upon the condition of those rental engines).

Most Unsual Thing You've Ever Seen at the Track

Remembered another one. Went to Old Dominion Speedway in Manassas, VA and during a heat race saw a car catching on fire. The unusual thing was the flagman - he lifted his leg and pointed the black flag at his own shoes when the car passed. The car stopped after a couple of laps near the fire...

    Unpopular Sports Opinions

True that people who participate in a sport find it appealing to watch too. Effects racing fans too - one way to generate more interest in racing is to get people to go to the track. Ride-along and driver school programs are great for this too. Watching on TV doesn't help much - racing loses...

    "What are you reading" thread

Found a copy of this Open Wheel Magazine issue from 1987 that I didn't have. I've been searching out the issues of racing magazines that I missed getting when they were current, and it's interesting to read about what was going on back in the day while knowing how they ended up. But don't...

NASCAR To Begin Allowing Limited Fans

To all of the people who say "I don't know anybody with COVID, and I don't see it around me, so I think it's overblown..." You should thank the people who do believe, as well as the doctors and nurses who are treating it, for it not effecting you. If they did nothing, and acted as if everything...
