18 team penalized for loose wheel

I'm surprized they dropped the hammer that bad. The rule is to protect the teams from taking advantage of an unsafe shortcut but this was clearly human error.

Is this a pr stunt nascar? You just apeased kb haters with the announcement but when the team appeals the penalties will be substantialy reduced.

Clearly? Maybe, possibly, 100%? Hmmm....sure maybe this time it was all human error, but rules are rules. Nothing in rule book saying intent, or error. Nascar went by the book and I applaud them for it. There issue here is if they go easy on both teams, because it looks like human error, then what would keep a future team from claiming human error when actually they were trying to gain an advantage?

Yea they could argue the team mightve been out there racing with 2 nuts on had they got that far. But what is this rules-are-rules malarchy? Nascar is anti-sononomous with rules-are-rules. They openly admit to handling these things on a case-by-case basis using judgement calls.

And they get killed for it, but now they are getting killed for sticking by the book. I guess damned if you do, and damned if you don't.

They arent getting killed for the penalty. They are getting killed for gross inconsistency.

It's pretty drastic for the truck team with less races. 4 races is over 20% of the season. They have 17 races left in the trucks

NASCAR needs to stop the cost cutting (aka "self policing") and put the officials back in the pits.

There are the rules and then there is such a thing as the spirit of the rules. Does anybody believe that the 18 team was trying to gain an advantage by leaving pit road sans lug nuts on the left rear?

Had the 18 not been fully penalized ..... you would have bashed Nascar for a month. It doesn't matter if they were trying to gain anything ....... the frikken wheel fell off and rolled down the track.

Didn't the article state that there would be no appeal ? Its cut and dried ...... the wheel fell off

I appreciate that NASCAR wants to keep drivers safe however, I wish they would just leave it up to the teams to get the lugs on safely.

Apparently somebody failed to do that ........... 2 wheels fell off in two races

Thought the tire changer forgot to change direction on the gun. If that's the case it's not the jackman's fault. Still the wrong call by NASCAR. This coming from a Shrub hater.

Wheel fell off ............. dangerous situation

"NASCAR CHANGES RULES TOO
MUCH! TOO MANY GRAY AREAS! NO WONDER SO MANY FANS LEAVE!"

*nascar sticks to the rule book*

"THOSE BASTARDS! NO WONDER THEY LOSE FANS!"

Chase Briscoe got the same penalty in the truck race on Friday it's a stupid move that shouldn't be done by professional race team. Take the penalty and move the hell on.

I'm not a fan of this rule, but since it exists, it had to be enforced. Otherwise, we'd be complaining about inconsistency with enforcing rules.

That said, I think the jackman should have been penalized as well since the incident was largely his fault.

I honestly don't know how I want feel about this, on one hand, it's good that NASCAR is being somewhat consistent with enforcing the rules, but on the other side of the hand, there is a difference between what happened to Kyle and what this rule was put in place for.

Either way, I think it sucks for the 18 team period.

The jackman should have been the only one penalized..... he is the only one in charge of when the car leaves the pit stall........

The rule about wheels coming off on the track has been in place for many years, nothing new about it.

Revisit 1990 Fall Charlotte race...... 3 car lost both left sides in turn 1.... no penalty...... Chocolate Myers and another crew member were allowed to take tires and jack down there......

that was bull@@@t..

I just don't think they should be penalized. Losing wheels and losing positions is the price they pay for being sloppy.

Just my opinion.

I think the stiff penalty keeps them honest ...... wheels coming off at 200 mph can do some real damage if they get into the stands ........... which they could. The penalty for these recent deals is pretty stiff but they know the rules going in.

Sweetie, I'm not going to argue. I dont want anyone hurt either. I feel the way I feel. I sincerely don't think you can compare Indy cars and NASCAR cars.

I certainly wasn't attempting to argue o_O
have a nice evening

I'm a bit late to the party.. but the 22 definitely got a penalty for removing equipment from the pit box. The penalty (drive through or stop and go) was served when they came in to remove the jack. Didnt lose a lap and a timely caution with more than half the race remaining are the reasons he was able to go win.

Also.. there is a specific rule with these penalties in place regarding a tire coming off on the race track.

The rule regarding the jack is removing equipment from the box.. and like the 18 crews penalty.. was served.

Even moreso.. Kyle still had a chance to win that race same as Joey.. he just didn't.

That being said.. I think this penalty is a bit extreme. The rule was made when they said they didn't have to have all the lugs on.. as somewhat of a precautionary device so they didn't push it too far. I feel the penalty should be less.. much less.. now that they have to have all the lugs tight.

Being somewhat consistent is like being somewhat pregnant as you either are or you are not.

Technically the 22 team got a penalty but it had zero impact so for all practical purposes there was no penalty. When you watch a stick and ball sport some officials call a really tight game while others let a lot go but the most important thing is consistency. If Nascar wants to follow all of its rules to the letter I am fine with it but we know they won't.
