2012 All-Star Race Announcement @ 2pm

Ouch. I would have had a hard time dealing with that. Luckily I'd already told kid that there's a chance we may have to pick a different race than Richmond and I told him today that we may be able to go to Charlotte about which he is equally excited.

I didn't deal with it, I was very sarcastic. And, of course, it was bitter cold up here the entire time I was supposed to be in Daytona.

The conversation went exactly like this.

Bosslady: I know you had plans to go to Florida, but can't you have whatever you were going there for rescheduled?
Me: Yeah, sure thing, I'll get on the phone with NASCAR and have them reschedule the Daytona 500.

There's a little track in the Smokey Mountains that looked quite similar before 1992 that's still on the schedule.

You can keep tradition and great racing around if you care to, but unfortunately North Wilkesboro found it's way into the hands of two guys looking to serve their own interests. I can say with confidence that if NWS got half the support Bristol has, there wouldn't be a seat to be had on any given weekend. You don't have to ask most race fans twice whether it deserved to. Instead we get a Charlotte clone, and two dates a year in Loudon.

Texas isn't even a Charlotte clone. Charlotte and Atlanta have good races, Texas is up there with Michigan, California and Indianapolis on the snoozefest list.

I like the racing at Loudon but that track does not need two dates a year.

Unfortunately, no matter what, Texas will ALWAYS have two races a year because they sued to get two races which is what led to Rockingham being gone. And California is the reason the Southern 500 is nothing significant anymore.

Hopefully they race this year, I guess a million wasn't enough last year. Maybe the winning driver should get an automatic chase berth?

.

You have obviously never been to TMS, cause if you had you would not be spouting such drivel, you effing wanker!!

It didn't suck until they brought the CoT in to the sport. Texas, Fontana, Michigan and Indianapolis did.

I seriously doubt that they'll ever hold every Nascar race at whichever track you happen to be closest to at the time, Andy.

They race out west and I don't see that ever changing but if you want to continue torturing yoursef, give 'em hell.

Wow..... This thread sure turned to crap overnight.

Anyhow, as far as the All-Star race goes..... I like the emphasis that they placed on winning those first four segments. Obviously, a driver wants to be up front to start that final 10 lap segment. Maybe this change will last more than a year or two, who the heck knows?

People are either liking the show or they are liking the gimmicks because they have still be attracting a crowd there. Sure they see the same type of percentage decline that almost all tracks have seen over the years but a 100,000 + fans seem to be OK with the show. And who knows..... Maybe if they don't show up this year Bruton may just rip Charlotte up too!

Seen elsewhere.....

With folks calling for All-Star race to switch locations each year, the most sensible solution is to run each segment at a different track.

This is brilliant! It could become IROC - the NA$$CAR Version! Create an All-Star Championship Series and have 4 different tracks involved with each race covering 50 laps or 50 miles or 50 minutes, tally up the points after each and crown an All-Star Champion after the 4th race. Brilliant!

BTW, I would like to apologize to everyone ('ceptin' Andy, of course) for my childish outbursts yesterday.
I would also like to thank TRL for not sending me to pergatory, even though I deserved it!
I promise to use my observational powers and my ascerbic wit (lol) for only good from this point forward.
Meet the NEW robbybee!
:angel2:

Yes I know there is another thread on this.. There is so much name calling and general crap in that thread I thought I'd make a simple post for those that choose not to read all the BS!

CONCORD, N.C. -- As an exhibition event with a big payday at the finish, the Sprint All-Star Race has always been about winning. Now that same philosophy is being carried over to the individual segments that comprise one of NASCAR's craziest nights.
In a format change to the May 19 event announced Tuesday, the winners of the first four 20-lap segments will be allowed to enter pit road first prior to the final 10-lap dash, providing them with a strategic advantage in the $1 million-to-win race at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Since there's no break before the final segment and no tire changes are mandatory on the final pit stop -- at a minimum, cars must only stop in their pit boxes -- crew chiefs promise to play a key role in determining who is out front when all the money is on the line.

"Those 20-lap segments are going to be a lot like the 10-lap segment," said Steve Addington, crew chief for defending Sprint Cup champion Tony Stewart. "Everybody's going to be wanting to get up front. I think it's going to be really important to win one of those segments, because coming down pit road, that opens it up to a lot."
Particularly with tires being optional on that final, mandatory pit stop, which means the event could very well swing on a decision to take two tires, or fuel only. Former All-Star Race winner Kasey Kahne said it would be tough for a driver on old tires to hold off another with four tires for the entirety of the final 10-lap segment. But the potential scenarios seem endless.
"If four guys don't get anything, and then you restart sixth with tires, you might be able to win from there," said Kahne, who won the event in 2008. "It will be interesting how it all works out. It will be a crew chief's game late in the race."
All-Star weekend festivities begin May 17 with the Sprint Pit Crew Challenge at Time Warner Arena in downtown Charlotte, and also include a Camping World Truck Series race at Charlotte Motor Speedway on May 18. Eligibility standards for the All-Star Race remain the same: race winners from 2011, from 2012 through May 12, or previous All-Star winners the past 10 years. Drivers who are not eligible can try to get in by being one of the top two finishers in the Sprint Showdown preceding the main event, or by winning Sprint Fan Vote.
Fan voting is open at NASCAR.COM/AllStar through 5 p.m. ET on May 19. Another fan element will be included in this year's event, where one fan will be chosen to introduce each driver prior to the All-Star Race. Fans can submit video introductions of their favorite drivers to sprint.com/speed, and a panel of judges will determine one winner for each driver, which will be shown on the high-definition video board at the speedway.

But it's all a prelude to the big show, a 90-lap event where because of the format change, drivers won't be able to lie back in the early-going and wait for the end. "I think the 20-lap segments are going to mean a lot," Kahne said. "You want to be in that top four coming to pit road for the final 10, because 10 laps goes by quick here. You've got to be in those front four spots if you want to win the race in 10 laps, I think."

The original poster of that idea meant that entirely as a joke and I never though of it in a realistic manner. Hearing you explanation of it now has me thinking that your idea is pretty dang good. Cost and manpower being the limiting factor. There would definitely have to be an IROC type sponsor for this but maybe that time has come again. Match this race up with wherever they are on those given weekends. I'd attend if it were being held as one of the supporting events to a race that I was already going to.

Me Too! Choose 4 tracks, say Bristol, Martinsville, Texas and Charlotte, and run an All-Star race the same day as the N'wide or Truck companion race. All of the drivers and crews would be there!

LOL..... There you go..... You already have me disagreeing with you. I'm going to choose for them to start in Bristol, Charlotte, Watkins Glen, & finish @ Martinsville.

3 out of 4 ain't really a disagreement, is it? ;)

I just listed 4 tracks at random. Replace TMS with a Road Course? I'm quite fine with that! I would suggest, however, that Sears Point be on the list as opposed to The Glen.

But a Road Course should be mandatory, fersure!

No way, California guy. I only live 4 hours away from Watkins Glen so I'm sticking to my guns on this one. :D

Good idea, but where does the money come from?

Wouldn't it be cool if there were 3 regular season segments and a point reset before the last segment? :D

That's what I had wondered in one of my earlier posts. That's the limiting factor in all of this. We only have to come up with the ideas. Someone else has to come up with the money. ;)

No way Chase lover! :p

I like it. I think it'll put more emphasis on winning a segment and help keep the intensity the whole race. Also I like the shortened first segment, the opening segment was too long before. No I only hope Goodyear brings a nice soft tire

LOL But you can't see shi!t from the grandstands at The Glen, whereas one can see the whole effen track from the Turn 7 section at Sanapa-Noma!

Actually, I'd be OK with Watkins Glen in the All-Star Throw Down.
I'd prolly be watching it on TV anyway so... :)

We are agreed on Bristol, Martinsville and Charlotte, right??!

Wish in one hand and crap in the other. See which one fills up first.

Brian France owns a PR firm. And Goodyear is a client.
It would be bad business to issue a tire that might make goodyear look bad by having a blow out. Can't have that now can we? :sarcasm:

Facts folks. Just the facts.

It's a plan. I've written it down and I'm sending it to Brian. Now..... Let's just sit back and wait for the response. ;)

I like the new rules. I've always felt the All-Star race had been losing it's luster for quite a few years now, with guys seemingly riding out the first few segments waiting for the last one. Guess we'll have to wait and see how this one pans out.

A junk event really. Wouldn't be much without the dancing bear and the clowns. Hope there are lots of crashes for the kids . The real race follows a week later.
