Last week was my last off week for a while and the Cup guys were off too. Now, i'm leaving Tue and i will be on the road and won't get to watch anymore races until the second week of Sept. Plus, i'm going to miss the Eldora race two years in a row.:(

decent internet connection? if so you could probably catch a stream.

Yeah, but the sales numbers have been awful (only something like 1000 sold YTD last I checked) and I'm afraid ole Chevrolet won't be importing them much longer so I may want to gobble one up sooner rather than later. It is a premium car, nice interior, dash, paddle shifters, etc. What I like the most is it comes with basically the same engine as the Corvette, but it looks like a discreet passenger car. People think I'm nuts when I say this, but I think cops look twice at "fast looking" cars like Camaros, Corvettes, Mustangs, etc. The SS is undercover, easy to mistake for a Malibu or Impala.

They only planned on selling 1-2k the first model year, so I wouldn't worry about sales numbers. It's a limited production vehicle by design. The 2015 will be available with a stick shift (finally) and optional Magride suspension (YES!). Several more paint options to choose from as well. No word on how many they will produce, but when you look at other sedans in it's class, it's still a great buy at $45-50k. You're getting a lot of car for the money.

That's also boss 302 price range, but the tickets would make it more expensive to drive.

Unless you have to have a Chevy, an SRT8 Charger ain't a bad way to go either. They're about the same price as an SS, but they have 55 more horsies.

I think the Boss 302 has been discontinued with the move to the new Mustang for 2015? I do love Boss Mustangs. 302 or 429. New or old. They are neat cars. At the big air show in Oshkosh, WI, they had a real 1969 Boss 429 on display one year at the Ford display. Not many of those around. Big $$$$$. Bring your wallet.

Something I've waited a long time for...Matt Crafton will attempt to make his Cup Series debut at Indy this weekend, in the #29 RAB Racing Toyota.

Kind of curious why he has never tried it before.

Yeah they quit the boss and now it is called the GT, still a 5 liter 302, starts at around 32 thou.

My excitement meter for this race is about a 2 out of 10. Maybe they should just throw them in some of the IndyCars in the museum and let them race those.

Jeff Gordon enjoys reminiscing, especially about the inaugural Brickyard 400 victory in 1994 that catapulted his NASCAR career. But there were memorable days prior to that, including one for which he wasn’t even present.

The date was May 1, 1989, at Louisville Motor Speedway. At the U.S. Auto Club’s midget race, a crash occurred after the cars crossed the finish line. Rollie Helmling, a Vincennes grocer who owned the car that finished 15th, ran to the fence to see the commotion. To his dismay, his car was wadded up in Turn 1. The driver was soon out of a ride. Helmling had three weeks to regroup for the prestigious “Night Before the 500” midget race at Indianapolis Raceway Park. He needed a new car and a different driver, and he stumbled onto both through an up-and-coming chassis builder who had just moved to the area. Bob East was starting to work with a California family that had relocated to Pittsboro three summers earlier so the son, Gordon, could race before he was 18. The family’s company built parts for East, who actually had raced against Gordon, then 14 or 15, in a dirt sprint car race in Knoxville, Iowa.

“I could see how talented he was even then,” East said.

Gordon preferred the rough-and-tumble dirt sprint cars, but he wanted to try a midget on pavement. The IRP race, which would be televised by a still-young ESPN, seemed like a good platform. Helmling met the Tri-West High School student at East’s rented shop behind a hardware store in Brownsburg. Gordon was the size of a lug nut, with a mustache-in-progress complementing a mullet. Likely wearing a polo shirt and a khaki slacks — that had been his “professional” look dating back to his karting days — the youngster extended his right hand.

“Mr. Helmling,” Jeff Gordon began, “I just want you to know how much I appreciate getting this opportunity.”

Helmling still laughs about it.

“Here’s this little guy, very nice, very polite and very much trying to look older than he was,” he said. “I was skeptical and we weren’t going to get any testing, but I thought, ‘Well, OK, let’s give it a try.’ ”

Jeff Gordon: Every time we come to Indianapolis we have a shot at winning. And this weekend, no doubt, is best chance we’ve had in long time.

Trend to be broken this weekend?

@jeff_gluck

Team Chevy has absolutely dominated the Brickyard. How dominant? Try 11 straight wins here.
