2014 Silly Season Thread

Congrats to Trevor, good to see him finally be in Cup full-time and nice to see a new fully committed sponsor in Cup.

Im sure Roush wont field 4 cars so one of them (Edwards/Biffle) is probably leaving. Hell they have a hard enough time fielding 3 cars half the time. I know qualifying isnt always a clue on whos fast for the 600 but seriously? Embarrasing.

Even look at the All-Star race. The only reason Carl was up front was because of fast pit stops. After 2 or 3 laps, out to lunch. Its becoming hard to watch. I hope he goes to Penske.

Who should be gone is Stenhouse. At least Biffle and Edwards can still perform. Not saying its all roush's choice but if he ends up with Stenhouse, Biffle and Bayne, he's gonna be in for a rough season.

Right but its all about the sponsorship. If Stinkhouse is bringing sponsor money, and is still under contract, it is what it is. Thats the only reason Bayne is going to cup, Advocare is going with him.

RFR wouldn't expand to four considering how much of a dumpster fire they are right now. Edwards is gone.
Wouldn't surprise me if RFR is just a two-car operation in 2015, with Bayne in the 6 and Stenhouse in the 17. If so, it would be the first time since 1995 that Roush has fielded fewer than three cars.

You think Biffle will be fired?

I dont know why but Ive never even given that a thought. Its certainly possible. Who would take Biffle though?

I'm thinking Biffle will be booted out. Edwards is young, connects with the fans, is great with the sponsors, and a fine gentleman. I don't listen to in-car radio much, but I haven't heard him swear...ever. Lot's of potential.

And he's a great driver too.

From what I can gather, its seems that 3M would stay with Biffle so If you think Roush wont re-sign him then you think a team like Petty or MWR? I just dont see Biff as a good fit at Penske or Gibbs but who knows I might be eating my words soon.

teams that want to improve their results
Nothing against Biffle, I just dont see another team willing to add another car for him. Maybe if there was an opening, but I dont see that anywhere either. Wait, isnt Ambrose gone after '14?

The reason I'm thinking maybe MWR is that they've made it known that they want to go back to a three-car operation, Biffle may have a sponsor to bring, and MWR has proven in the past that they don't mind hiring "seasoned" drivers.

Good point, i.e. Mark Martin. I guess I'd rather see Biff at another Ford team (being a Ford guy that I am) but Im not sure if RPM would be a step up, or a step sideways for him.

If Ambrose does leave RPM, I could see MWR being a spot for him actually. He essentially raced for them before when JTG/Daugherty was an in-house satellite team of MWR.

with biffle, myself i think he'll be back with the cat in the hat, but if he can bring sponsorship with him for a year or two, why wouldn't a team that has room for him add him to their roster. especially if they were planning on adding one of the younger driver after a season or two from the lower tiers, it would give them a head start instead of starting from scratch. he's still a top driver.

Wonder if the Wood Bros. have anyone in mind to replace Bayne.

Do they keep their part-time Cup program going with another young gun running in NNS or do they go with an older guy who doesn't want to run every week ?

  • Wood Brothers Racing Statement On Trevor Bayne Departure In 2015: "Trevor Bayne will always be part of our family. And we will always share that great Daytona 500 moment together. It's something that will always be so special for all of us," said Eddie Wood, co-owner, Wood Brothers Racing. "We will always be Trevor Bayne fans, so we are happy he is getting his shot to race for the Sprint Cup Championship. We are going to do everything in our power to get him to victory lane one more time in the #21 Fusion."(Wood Brothers Racing)(5-24-2014)

At least one driver is gone from RFR now that Bayne has a full time ride. Even thought Jack said he is willing to field four cars, I don't see it happening.

Just thinking the same. Maybe give Reed or Buescher a part time deal?

Well I guess the writing is on the wall for Biff and Edwards now. RFR moving in another direction with Bayne, not surprising and I'm very happy for Trevor he deserves a shot.

I wonder if they could get Ryan Blaney some starts in the 21, might be mutually beneficial.

How closely aligned are the Wood bros and RFR? Would the Woods give a Penske driver a chance or would they look for a Roush selected guy? I'm assuming they'd be looking for a Ford driver at the very least.

Bayne?
128 NNW races = 2 wins & 59 top tens and 6 poles
50 Cup races, 1 win, a fluke you could say but I won't..o_O and 3 top tens
Not exactly stellar performances. Goes with Jack's philosophy I guess, buy low and don't expect much..just sayin'

Lets assume Carl leaves. Does he take Jimmy Fennig with him wherever he goes? Or is Fennig Bayne's new crew chief? Not sure how that will work out...

its a situation where Bayne is young and has a sponsor. Roush team has fallen off so who knows If Bayne would be better elsewhere. I don't mind it cause now in a cup ride full time, this will be his shot. If he fails, he's pretty much done.

I hope Biff gets at least another seat for a couple of years before he calls it quits. I have enjoyed watching him, I grew up watching him progress and winning in Truck and Nationwide series. I would love to see him get a cup championship, but also didn't Biffle start his career a tad bit later than most?

I still have a Granger diecast somewhere from that 2000 season.

Could be in an alternate universe where after what...60 years, the Wood Brothers switch to another manufacturer. In a hypothetical, Toyota lures them away with promises of TRD support, because of the Wood Bros name still, even with their dropoff, has some swag with it in the racing world. TRD support, young Toyota developmental drivers using the ride like Rousch and Bayne have, and Toyota sponsors them with ToyotaCare much the same way that Ford/Motocraft has.

Wont happen, but its something to think about.
