2014 Silly Season Thread

i feel if let's say alltel was a sponsor the year before sprint took over and they were planning on staying as a sponsor after sprint took it over, they should be allowed, just as long as they didn't miss a year and then try to come back in. i wouldn't own a mom & pops hardware store and allow lowes to advertise in it.
I believe Verizon acquired Alltel, which had sponsored the 12 car since 2002. Alltel was allowed to stay on the car after Sprint assumed sponsorship of the series, Verizon was not.

Gone are the days of companies sponsoring 36 races a year and begging to give their money away.
Which is why turning away the ones that do want to sponsor teams at the highest level because of NASCAR's "official partners" is sad. Enough sponsors have already left the sport the last several years and we're going to turn away some of those who want to come in. Good grief.

I'd rather have Verizon's $10-20 million/year than their $0 a year because Sprint said so. Thankfully they're at least already more committed to IndyCar than Izod ever was.

If the rumors of Brian Scott going to the 13 car next year are true, I think Casey Mears might make a good replacement for Bayne. Mears has kind of run his course in Cup, so perhaps he could run full time NW in the #6 next year and do part time duty for the Wood Brothers in the 21.
Knowing Roush, he'll have Ryan Reed put in the #21 next year since he brings in money and he tends to rush young drivers anyways.

If any of Roush's development drivers gets in the #21 next year it should be Chris Buescher.

Except it doesn't, those telecom companies are all able to sponsor cars/drivers/teams in any of the other NASCAR sanctioned series if they so choose. They chose to leave the sport entirely, which says a lot about their interest in the sport and it's fans. Sprint is paying more than any other company, so I don't see a problem with it.

Gone are the days of companies sponsoring 36 races a year and begging to give their money away. They all want value and exposure and I would say that it's a good deal for both parties. The teams are having to work a little harder to find sponsorship these days, but the HMS,JGR,Penske etc are still doing quite well. Now some are struggling no doubt, see Roush, but I don't think letting some telecom companies into Cup would change a thing.
It could change alot of things. Look at the level of support Verizon throws at Penske in Indycar. And its completely reasonable that they dont want to sponsor outside of Sprint cup, it is the headline series that gets the most exposure afterall.

You are being very obtuse here.

I think he will go with Buescher in this case because Ford does sponsor that car anyway. But I do expect Reed to run in the 99/16 part time with the sponsor ship.

i think you're right and sprint gave them 1 year after takeover and then had to be off the car i believe. the way that 12 car was running, winning races and getting poles, they were getting more attention than sprint was, and that not what sprint paid the money for. they paid for their brand to be the top dog. i didn't really like it but i can understand why sprint done it. if it was reversed would alltel/verizon not do the same to sprint.

Like what? The level of sponsorship one team or driver gets? The series sponsorship is far more important than a single car or team IMO; for that, certain benefits are afforded.

That's reasonable, but it's unreasonable of the title sponsor to expect exclusitivity amongst its competitors in the series it sponsors? I can't see the logic there, but perhaps we see the advertising and marketing world in different ways.

How am I being obtuse? Just curious :)

Ok, so let's dig deeper here.
Let's say RPM goes to another manufacturer (which I hope they do)...where will RPM's shop be? And even deeper than that...who will move into the existing RPM shop next door to Roush?

Are they right next door to Roush? That changes everything! Darkside is moving in! There goes the neighborhood!

There's been a lot of talk about Biff and Edwards possibly going to JGR or MWR, but what about RCR?

I think if Biffle brings 3M with him, he could be a good fit at RCR. I presume they have the ability to expand back to 4 cars, if sponsorship is coming too. They could really use a proven winner and veteran driver as well. We all know pop pop's grand plan, but he could bring in Biffle and then when Ty comes up to Cup in a few years they could turf one of Menard or Newman. It might be tough to ditch Menard given the dough he brings but IMO Biffle is a better driver than anyone in the RCR stable. Just a thought.

Very possible, I just think grand pops is going to bring up Ty in 2015 for part time in the 33 which hinders the 4 car rule. But he could also use one of his satalite teams. Anything's possible with 3M coming along. I also believe he's a better driver than anyone at RCR. As a whole I think the RCR equipment is pretty decent but the drivers are mediocre.

I wouldn't be suprised to see this happen and would be really really happy to see carl go to penske....I wont be too sad about biffle going to mwr he is 45 next year after all and cant blame him for leaving.

Nothing I have read points to Carl going to Penske which would make the most sense. Everybody sipping the JGR Kool-Aide. Won't believe it until I see it. Penske makes too much damn sense.

tha way penske's run this yr w/ both cars.....carl goin there makes sense. ford may think so too ? ha!
brings subway / fastenal w/ him.

ganassi ta 3 cars in '15 ?

mwr already set up for 3 cars......plus kaufman $$.

I ford was smart they would throw money at Ganassi to switch. Kyle Larson is the real deal. Plus if guys are leaving Roush they need help bad.

I went on record over a week ago it was biffle MWR carl goes to penske. If it happens I will have to pull up the thread.

I want him to go to penske and show the boys how it's done. With Logano or Brads car, he'd have more wins than both this year.
It's true, my Edwards superfan wife told me so.

I actually think Ambrose to MWR makes more sense than Biffle IMO. So I am calling Ambrose+Stanley/DeWalt to MWR, Biffle/3M to RPM.

I think Amirola and Biffle sound likes a good lineup. A very likeable group of guys.

Honestly, how long you think RFR will keep its doors open?

I don't think Roush is going anywhere!

You guys should read the posts on roush fenways facebook page....I among many other Ford/RFR fans are just lighting up the organization about how badly they have done. And yet we never get a reaponse. As much as you others probably don't like jack or the organization or Ford. I'm sure you can understand how frustrating and sad it is to be a fan of them right now.

Bayne can be a Greg Biffle type in time IMO. Stenhouse a Martin Truex, Jr. type. And Chris Buescher has talent. They aren't mega prospects like a Blaney, Elliott, or Larson, no, but they do have some upside. RFR can be solid again, might not be tomorrow, but they can be.

And it is worth nothing that the pipelines are pretty bare in the Nationwide series for everyone for the most part.

Roush should leave Chris Buescher in NNS for another season or two and go after his brother James. I think James could already do decent in a Cup ride. Maybe even go after Raheem.

They are cousins FYI
