2016 Charlotte - Bank of America 500 - Pre Race Thread

Newest track looks really good for Saturday, fingers crossed!

Not to be a downer but, as someone else mentioned, rain bands extend well outside the yellow borders of the storm. I would not feel especially confident at the moment (but could change!)

Now, if NASCAR engineers could come up with some sort of way to mount the all new yet untested Air-Titan III to the front air-dam of these Cup cars, we'd be all set. Then we'd be all set to run in the rain. Even hurricane rains.

They need to start thinking outside the box. So far outside that maybe they need to be thinking outside the factory that makes the boxes.

There you go again, trying to improve aerodynamic downforce by making the splitter longer.

That may have been me, but this particular forecast makes me pretty confident they'll get it in this weekend.

TIRE CODES - SPRINT CUP

Tire: Goodyear Eagle Speedway Radials

Set limits: Sprint Cup: 5 sets for practice/qualifying and 10 sets for the race

Tire Codes: Left-side -- D-4698 Right-side -- D-4700

Tire Circumference: Left-side -- 87.44 in. (2,221 mm) Right-side -- 88.50 in. (2,248 mm)

Minimum Recommended Inflation:
Left Front -- 25 psi Left Rear -- 25 psi
Right Front -- 54 psi Right Rear -- 50 psi

Notes: Teams in the NASCAR Sprint Cup and Xfinity Series will run completely different tire set-ups at Charlotte . . .

... for Sprint Cup, this is the same combination of left- and right-side tires that teams ran both weeks at Charlotte in May . . . as on all NASCAR ovals greater than one mile in length, teams are required to run inner liners in all four tire positions at Charlotte . . . air pressure in those inner liners should be 12-25 psi greater than that of the outer tire.

TIRE CODES - XFINITY SERIES

Tire: Goodyear Eagle Speedway Radials

Set limits:
Xfinity: 8 sets for the event

Tire Codes:
Left-side -- D-4688 Right-side -- D-4694

Tire Circumference:
Left-side -- 87.56 in. (2,224 mm)
Right-side -- 88.39 in. (2,245 mm)

Minimum Recommended Inflation:
Left Front -- 26 psi Left Rear -- 26 psi
Right Front -- 54 psi Right Rear -- 50 psi

Notes: Teams in the NASCAR Xfinity and Sprint Cup Series will run completely different tire set-ups at Charlotte . . .

... for Xfinity, this is the same combination of left-and right-side tires teams ran at Charlotte in May . . . this right-side tire code (D-4694) employs Goodyear's multi-zone tread technology, which combines two distinct tread compounds on the same tire -- the outboard 10 inches of the tread (Traction Zone) features a compound that is designed for grip, while the inboard two inches of the tread (Endurance Zone) is toughened to enhance durability on the part of the tire sees the most heat and takes the most abuse . . .

... as on all NASCAR ovals greater than one mile in length, teams are required to run inner liners in all four tire positions at Charlotte . . . air pressure in those inner liners should be 12-25 psi greater than that of the outer tire.

Jayski's Race Page ... thanks

Oh great, the cars are going to be on rails again... yawn. Is it just me or has Goodyear really backed away from bringing softer tires over the course of the season?

HA! The #41 team is discussing the possible changes to the car and track after the storm moves out and the barometric pressure goes back up. :D

50 pounds of tire is really unfair to the drivers. They did nothing wrong to deserve to drive a harder car to control.

Holy crap that was one nerve-wracking first session! Also, can someone explain why NBC can go commercial free for over 25 minutes during qualifying and not for the race?? Prioritie$ NBC...

'Cause during qualifying they jam all the ads in during the 10 minute break between rounds. The only sports content between rounds is a 90-second interview with the two guys who "missed it by ----that--- much!", Agent 86.

Dibendidurdo knocking the 42 out pissed me off. Dude ended up qualifying 24th anyways. Lol.

Bowman is legit. It's a crying shame that he has NO offers in ANY series next year.

NASCAR so far sticking w/Friday sked. It has told its Air Titans drivers to be at track by 10am. Cup practice starts things at 3:30.

@bobpockrass

Rain likely starting in next few hrs at track. Forecasts vary when rain ends Sat afternoon/evening.

hopefully no weepers like 98 I really thought Darrel was going to win.

Oh, before we all forget,

Obligatory pre-race complaints about the Chase, 1.5-mile tracks, qualifying procedures, college football conflicts, TV coverage, etc.

We now return you to your emergency weather coverage.

I thought the race was on Sunday afternoon until I started reading through this thread but cookie cutter tracks suck and Bruton ruined Charlotte after he levigated it as few years back. The chase sucks, IDK anything about qualifying but I am sure it sucks, 'Noles and 'Canes tonight which will be bliss even though my 'Noles may get a whippin', and of course the broadcast will suck!
