Question for you guys, I saw that Jordan Taylor is driving for Corvette, do the IMSA teams not race in this event? I thought I read there was a prototype class and was wondering what the difference was.

Such a newb to this style of racing.

No this is not an IMSA event. It is considered a FIA WEC (World Endurance Championship) event. WEC is basically the European equivalent to IMSA but is much more popular in Europe than IMSA is in the US.
Anyway, think of the 24 hr of LeMans as the Daytona or Indy 500. It is a huge historical race that drivers and teams from all over the world want to participate in. Hence there are IMSA drivers and teams in this huge world event but not all IMSA drivers or teams participate.

I'm still new to sportscar racing as well, but it is very interesting.
I've learned that there is a lot of politics and manuevering involved in the 24 hrs of lemans, especially last year when Ford faced off against Ferrari in the 50 year anniversary of the Ford GT. And even though I wish the politics and maneuvering wouldn't go on, it kind of adds drama to the race and makes it a little more intesting to watch. It helps give you someone to cheer for IMO.

The #43 Keating Riley, Corvettes, #68 and #69 Fords, #82 Risi Ferrari, and #62 and #65 Scuderia Corsa Ferraris are all IMSA entrants. Everyone from the WEC gets in, then IMSA, the European Le Mans Series, and the Asian Le Mans Series all get a certain number of bids to award, and after that teams from those same three series can apply for at-large bids.

For the time being the IMSA DPi cars can't run at Le Mans unless they were to change their bodywork and engine back to the global specs. So it doesn't make any sense for the Taylors to strip their Cadillac bodywork and engine out to go over there and run when they're normally supported and funded in part by GM. But Jordan is still a GM factory driver so they usually put him in one of the Corvettes for Le Mans. Ricky was in one last year too and is in the #43 Keating Riley (same type of car that Visit Florida Racing run in IMSA) this year.

The WEC GTE classes uses a Balance of Performance system to try to get cars within the same performance window so the factories don't get into a spending war and kill off all competition. It can be controversial sometimes but it's the reason why the class has five manufacturers and another two or three joining in the next few years. Otherwise you get these periods where Corvette and Aston Martin were running alone.

yeah only way to go IMO. nobody is ever going to be satisfied, but that's the way it should be..everybody pissed off, but it sure looks cool with all of those brands racing hard together. As far as I am concerned, LeMans should be all door slammers racing. Pretty frustrating for me watching diesel Audi's dominating the race and ignoring all of the good close racing in the door slammers classes.

With Audi gone and only two manufacturers in LMP1 for the first time since 2013 we should see a lot more of the GTE classes. Even the Am class is looking pretty good this year.

The Rolex this year really opened my eyes to the sports car world - of course Gordon's participating is what drew me in and made me pay attention (I guess it worked on some people, eh?). I've tried to keep an ear to it and have watched at least some of each of the IMSA events so far.

there is a whole lot of game playing that results in a lot of bickering between the teams in this series..Nascar used to have this same thing back in the day. now it is going on in the inspection line. I'm pretty sure the guy is right. If Ford is throwing money at that GT it will continue to get faster and they will try their best to hide it.

What a beautiful day for a 24 hr rodeo in France. Clear skies, very
little chance of rain , Highs in the mid 80's , lows in the low 60's.

Everyone on /r/WEC and Twitter are complaining that the stream they bought isn't working. I bought the full-season stream the last couple of years and got pretty tired of their service. Fortunately I didn't buy it this year, because they've really bungled it this time around. Pretty amazing that FOX has the best coverage of something for once. I streamed Spa and now Le Mans through FSGo and they never cut to commercial.
 
I love this race. Thanks for the links everyone. FSGO is where it is at atm.
