2017 Charlotte - Bank of America 500 - Pre Race Thread

Less than 10 minutes into practice and the #88 going to a backup already. Jr. blames getting the right side into the gooey stuff.

"I don't know why they sprayed this stuff for a day race" - Jr., along with other uncomplimentary remarks.

I thought the "sticky stuff" was supposed to give you more grip?

That's what Jr. thought too. Chase Elliott got squirrelly. The goo is up on the third line. Others don't appear to be having issues, but some are staying low on practice Q runs.

Green, but you wouldn't know since they spent five minutes showing us why you shouldn't drive through the grass.

Kes in the wall in 4, used the new chicane as a run-off lane. No status of backup yet. Did carry a lot of speed into the chicane though. :p

Tried to watch on my computer. NBCSN won't load in the DIRECTV website or NBC Sports app on my laptop.

Never thought I'd beg for Fox Sports to come back but man, they're better in every single aspect right now.

If I had to guess I would say a lot of people see it as just another gimmick and find it bemusing that hairspray has to be applied to a racing surface in an attempt to make the product palatable. It goes back to applying gimmicks and band aids to a gaping wound instead of doing corrective surgery to get things right. This is only a guess on my part and I could very easily be off base.
You have not addressed my questions, only sidestepped them while trotting out the g-word yet again. A gimmick? Nascar haters always say the same about any new idea in the stock car industry, but I have yet to see any rational analysis of what a gimmick is or isn't. A buzz word label does not answer what is good or bad about VHT, or progressive banking, or any banking at all. Why is one good and another bad?

I hear complaints that fans want more passing and more side-by-side racing. And yet Charlotte - notorious for many decades as a single groove track dominated by aerodynamics - is just "doing more gimmicks" by trying to open up alternate lines? I guess fans won't be happy until every track is like Talladega... three-wide pack racing with lead changes every lap... and traditional racing skills are relegated to history in favor of those who can "see the air."

When are you flying home though?

We leave NC on Monday night, but we are in Savannah and then SC and then back to Charlotte the following weekend before we fly back to CA. I can do the Monday race it will just set our time table back a few hours as we are driving on Monday from NC to Savannah.

As I stated in my reply I was just guessing on how other fans may see it but as I also said I may be wrong about the entire thing. Sometimes we don't get the answers we want as I have asked a million times why Nascar should give to GM and Ford what Toyota has worked hard to achieve and no one will tell me.

Personally I don't give a ratsass if the tracks use stickum, hairspray, peanut butter and jelly or 80 weight oil on the racing surfaces as the horse has been out of the barn for a longtime already.

Most of them don't know anything about the track or how it races. it's gooey ewwww nasty

This is exciting watching all the cars go through inspection. :sarcasm:

I don't think that has ever happened. All four SHR's in the top 12

I think KDB has been replaced by an alien. He was all smiles after a fourth place qualifying stint. He might be sick or something :D

I'm not sure he doesn't do that on purpose to keep the press off of him sometimes. Especially at Charlotte. He's won there 8 times, last time year before last.

You can never count him out anywhere........ especially at the last of the season.... I was never a 48 fan.... but.... I sure as hell appreciate how good he and his team are...... they are never to be underestimated......

I expect him to win 8 or even more Championships before he retires.......

Dega is Johnson's worry, he only has a couple of wins there and a 17th average to a 12.7th at Charlotte. I think he will be all over Charlotte to get as many points as possible.

I agree........ Dega is a crapshoot for everyone...... it can be a real gamechanger...... I realize a lot of folks don't like 'Dega..... (the 4 plate races are my favorites)....... I think having it in the Chase is a good choice..... It's like rolling the roulette wheel.... whoever survives can breath a little easier....
