2017 Kansas - Hollywood Casino 400 - Pre Race Thread

This weekend at Kansas Speedway marks Kasey Kahne's 500th start in the NASCAR Cup Series. Kahne's rookie year in the Cup Series was in 2004, when he won four pole awards and took home Rookie of the Year honors. At the time, the 24-year-old was the youngest rookie of the year since Jeff Gordon won the honor at the age of 22 in 1993. (Hendrick Motorsports)

I was recently assured that F1 "is seen as sexy, fun, and something to be enjoyed by the elite."

Maybe in other countries. In high school, in college, at work, I've never personally met anyone who actively watched F1. Only one guy I've met preferred Indy to NASCAR but watched both. Any other motorsports fans were usually NASCAR or drag racing fans with some motocross fans in the mix as well. Then again I'm in the upper South so it is probably different in other parts of the country.

I don't know anyone that watches F1 either. I gave it a try a few times I think about two years ago. I watched the pass for the lead going into the 1st turn at the drop of the green. That was the race. I think the leader led every lap after. If they didn't, it was damn close to that. Outside of a grid girl, or what ever they're called, I can't think of a single thing that I find interesting about that sport. Hell, it took me all that I could do to muster up this response. At this point, I think I've depleted my interest in that sport once again. Back to NASCAR.....

Used to be up at the crack of dawn...err....before dawn every race when Toyota was in it. They celebrate the cars, the event, and no mention of attendance. I was in.....now I have the WRC. Love that stuff for the same reasons. It's refreshing after NASCAR Nation does its level headed best to bring this sport down. You know, the idea of "fans" liking the sport they watch is really cool.

I watch still and still wake up early for the Euro races but DVR the Asia/Japan races. Been a fan of Schumacher since I was a kid and now of Kimi and Vettel. I find everything interesting about F1 and to boot they have a killer video game as well. However you’re right some of these races....I’ll just say most times the most exciting part of a weekend is Qualifying Day I watch everyone. Or if/when Sergio Perez decides to run his teammate off the truck

On the rare occasions I discuss F1, I often hear that Q is more exciting than the race itself. There's something that strikes me as wrong about that, but I can't put my finger on exactly what. It's like pre-season football being more entertaining than the regular season. If the preliminaries are the best part, why bother with the main event?

I checked this thread to see what time the race would begin on NBC and quickly found it was on NBCS. It doesn't matter to me but I figured with mega importance of the playoffs F1 would be on cable and Cup on over the air. If this is one of those races where drivers get booted from the playoffs it may be essentially unwatchable if it is like the last one where they couldn't stop showing Ricky Stenhouse and Burton and Letarte shrieking like a bunch of teenage girls.

TIRE CODES

Tire:
Goodyear Eagle Speedway Radials

Set limits:
Cup: 4 sets for practice 1 set for qualifying and 8 sets for the race
Xfinity: 7 sets for the event

Tire Codes:
Left-side -- D-4698 Right-side -- D-4720

Tire Circumference:
Left-side -- 87.44 in. (2,221 mm)
Right-side -- 88.66 in. (2,252 mm)

Minimum Recommended Inflation:
Left Front -- 22 psi Left Rear -- 22 psi
Right Front -- 54 psi Right Rear -- 50 psi

Storyline - Multi-zone Tread Tire Offers Multi-purpose Solution: Goodyear's multi-zone right-side tire accomplishes two prime tasks - one for each compound across the tread. Because of the camber rules NASCAR Cup teams compete under, the cars run on a full contact patch through the banked corners but only on the inboard inch or two of the right-front tire down the flatter straightaways. That results in that portion of the tire handling a great amount of the abuse and heat generated on a lap at speed. Because of that, and to protect the tire, Goodyear runs a more wear and heat resistant compound on the inboard two inches of the tread. To counter-balance that and give the cars more grip in the corners, Goodyear runs a second, more tractive compound across the outboard 10 inches of the tread. With the low downforce rules under which Cup teams now compete, having that grip from the outboard compound is crucial.

"By running the compound we do on the inboard 'Endurance Zone' of the right-side tire, it enables us to give the cars a more tractive compound on the outboard 'Grip Zone,'" said Greg Stucker, Goodyear's director of racing. "This really comes into play at fast tracks like Kansas. With the speeds these cars are running and the camber settings in the front end, that generates a lot of heat in the tire, which shows up most on the inboard of the right-front. Protecting that area frees us up to give maximum grip with the outboard. Another thing about the Kansas tire set-up is the grip improvement we brought with the left-side compound starting with the May race. As we've moved forward with NASCAR's lower downforce rules package, we've been able to add grip on that side of the car as well."

Notes: Teams in both the NASCAR Cup and Xfinity Series teams will run the same tire set-up at Kansas this week . . . this is the same combination of left- and right-side tires Cup teams ran at this track in May . . . teams in both of these series have also run this left-side tire code at Charlotte this season . . . for Xfinity teams, this is the first time they have run this tire set-up at Kansas . . . the main differences from last year's Xfinity tire combination are a compound change on the left-side (more grip) and the move to a multi-zone tread right-side (ran single compound right-side at Kansas in 2016) . . . as on all NASCAR ovals greater than one mile in length, teams are required to run inner liners in all four tire positions at Kansas . . . air pressure in those inner liners should be 12-25 psi greater than that of the outer tire.

I wonder what the ratio to winning the pole and winning the race is in F-1. I bet it is really high. In Nascar it is only a good indicator of a fast car with the chance of having a win if everything pans out. I am in awe of the F-1 race tracks in the various countries, but if a country only has to build and fund one race track it is what it is. It does give some F-1 fans a reason to stick their noses up in the air, but from a racing competition standpoint IMO they really need some help. Gene Haas is getting a taste of how that series is run compared to Nascar.

2017 F1 season.....

9 out of the 16 races were won from the pole

14 of 16 won from a top 3 starting position

4,0,3,3,5,1,0,2,2,0,3,2,2,1,3,3..... Number of lead changes in each of the 16 races run in 2017

Riveting I'm sure.

Disclaimer: I put far too much effort into compiling those stats.

More people watch NASCAR. Putting it on cable gets more people to subscribe to NBCSN.

F1 is usually hidden on NBCSN around 8 AM Eastern so they put the races that air in good time slots for Americans (U.S., Mexican, and Canadian GPs) along with Monaco on OTA TV.

Wow thanks. I try not to troll F-1 but I am glad I had just swallowed my coffee or there would have been a mess.

Thanks for cluing me in as it makes sense.

F1 was more interesting this season until last month, when Ferrari started choking so hard that no Heimlich maneuver could save them.
:XXROFL:

I remember a person saying how the money paid by FOX and NBC for broadcast rights was a no brainer as they would be able to raise the fees charged to cable/sat providers so the rights fees would be recaptured plus a whole lot more. Does anyone know if FOX or NBC sports have been able to meaningfully increase fees?

Wish this was Talladega, Kansas poses no excitement for an elimination race

thats actually been crazy to see in real time, Vettel really did have Hamilton and Mercedes on the ropes, then Kimi started having problems technically and those technical problems carried over to Vettel ( the team as a whole also lost their speed. I would even say Red Bull is faster than them now along with Mercedes) who dare I say... had Championship Implications.

That's not what he said . . .

He said "...most times the most exciting part of a weekend is Qualifying Day..." I asked, why watch the race? I'm open to answers from all respondents, including you.

I wasn't actually responding to the content of your post but instead cherry-picked that emboldened line about "preliminaries" and "the main event" and attempted to turn it into a version of the "that's what he said" joke.

Sorry for the misunderstanding.

well if I may disagree I did say that Qualifying is the most EXCITING part of the weekend, I still find the race the best part. It's just something about the spectacle of seeing those cars and drivers. I hope to attend a race one day, on my bucket list for sure.

IDK anything about F1 other than the GP of Monaco is a sight to behold and some of the drivers have really cool sounding names.

In US open wheel Will Power is a great name but is topped by Sage Karam and from some of the races I have seen he needs to change the spelling of his surname to Carom.

After the split there were some interesting names like Buzz Calkins, Davy Jones, Airton Dare, Memo Gidley and 2 of my all time faves Billy Roe and Billy Boat. It would have been fun to have them as teammates and if only some European named Giuseppe Yore could have started in the Indy 500 between Roe and Boat....well it just don't get no better than that.

I'm not really sure what you're asking but William Byron is currently leading the points in the Xfinity Series. That kinda makes him relevant.
