2017 Martinsville - First Data 500 - Pre Race Thread

People can point to one race and say, "If that had started earlier, they'd have gotten it all in!". They can also point to another and say, "If they'd started later, they wouldn't have had to postpone it! It quit raining two hours after they called it." Regardless of the start time, there will always be the chance weather will interfere.

But regardless of the weather, 3:00 Eastern is not the start time I would choose for any race at any track.

Flashback pic from the first night race held @ Martinsville.....

Little known factoid about that race. Many of the over 50 crowd in attendance that night were fast asleep in the stands due to the late finish of that race. Most of them missed the exciting finish.

Just ANOTHER reason why a 3PM start is idiotic. That's wasting 2-3 hours that COULD be used to get the race in without having to call it and bring people back the next day. If NASCAR didn't learn anything from what happened at Indy this year, then there is ZERO hope that they will EVER figure it out.

The rain is supposed to be in the morning hours. It's more likely that, if Martinsville didn't have lights, the start might be pushed back and the race called early due to darkness. Which is exactly the reason they put lights up.

Depends on the weather like it always has. The lights give the option of getting the race in on Sunday instead of Monday if possible. Can't understand all of the hate and blame to Nascar. The network is wanting the race closer to prime time is the reason for the later starts.

I have a friend at the campground close to the track. I'm hoping it doesn't rain on him.
He swears that every time he camps, it rains. *fingers crossed it doesn't*

Sounds about like RIR and the VA State Fair, rains at some point over the weekend almost every year. Hoping your friend stays dry and gets to enjoy the race!

Looks like rain in the morning but will dry out for the race. Making the little later start time look like a good decision.

As finicky as Nascar fans are about weather I would think if it drops below 50 the stands will empty .

@Dale Jr. to wear @NBCSN's Helmet Visor Cam 24/7 for next four weeks.

For me the helmet cam, like many other camera angles, is too much of a good thing. Sporadic in car shots and pics of glowing brake rotors and of drivers feet are OK but they tend to overuse them, IMO.

Love how everybody counting the 18 out and giving the championship to Truex lol:XXROFL:the 18 is going to kill this this round watch! Even in the championship.

52? Break out the shorts
#floridaboy lol. We don't see 52 as a high but maybe a handful of times a year, if that.

I'd watch a race in it though. Watched the duels in Daytona a couple years ago when it was about 37 at night and windy way up in those tower seats.

Another thing Jimmie is done !!!! Tired of hearing about this lucky dude!

Turn 4: Is it OK that Kansas qualifying set pit-stall selection order for Martinsville because there is only about two hours between qualifying and the race?

Craven: Pit road selection at Martinsville is critical. Nothing about competing at Martinsville translates to competing at Kansas. The whole concept seems convoluted. I haven't figured out the logic behind this decision.

McGee: This is dumb. We finally have the one-day show I've been begging for and this is sitting there, in the way. File this in the drawer marked "There's always one thing that makes you go, 'Why?'" It's a pretty full drawer.

Pockrass: No. When NASCAR has back-to-back races because of rain, the stalls are able to get set up within an hour. Where there's a will, there's a way and there should be a will to have qualifying impact pit selection for that specific race. To have Kansas qualifying impact the Martinsville race just seems wrong.

Willis: Something about it rubs me the wrong way, and maybe it's because we've seen pit road come so much into play recently (see Kenseth, Matt), and that pit road is so tight here that the first pit stall could be worth a few positions each stop. Kansas and Martinsville are such different animals. Why not use practice speeds from Friday and give a little extra juice to those practices? Or, better yet, a hot dog eating contest!

LewTheShoe: No. If there is no way to set up after qualifying - which I seriously doubt - then Martinsville pit selection should be done by owners' points... same as if qualifying were rained out.
