2018 Dover - AAA 400 Drive for Autism - Pre-Race Thread

If you haven't been before you're better off skipping Pocono anyway, miserable place to see a race live, you miss basically all of the action being there.

I went to Sonoma last year, sat in the grandstands. Miss most of the track. Going again this year. It's a race. I am there. Life is good. My two cents. I respect what you are saying.

Been going to Pocono for 30 years! If you get good seats it's a great place to see a race for a 2.5 mile track! The only spot where it's tough to see the cars is when they pass through the short chute. Pocono has very friendly ticket prices! The top rows are only like $80. Plus, it's up there with 'Dega for infield reputation!!

Putting on my "looking at the radar hat" it appears there are lines of storms to the west and southwest of Dover. It also looks like they're starting to grow and might eventually combine as the daily heating continues. They were should have pushed the start up to 1. A lot can change in the next 70 minutes....

There must be something about turn 1. This was my seat from June 1992 through June 2010 (pic is from '10). Prior to this we sat on the old wooden bleachers along the front stretch. Dover really is cool!!

I've been high in turn 3, low in turn 2, and on the front stretch, but 2 years ago I sat up here in turn 1 and I'll never sit anywhere else here again.

We had the pic seat for the June race and sat at the exit of turn 4 for the fall race starting in 1993. Prior to that we sat on the front straight. Dover didn't really start expanding their seating until '91 or '92. Once they did we were able to "move up" with our renewals. The old wooden front straight bleachers were brutal.

If you guys have fun that's all that matters. I sat in the top rows at Pocono and hated it because the campers in the infield block most of the views from turn 1 to turn 3 even using a pair of binoculars. The traffic was hell getting in and out cause of the one road that gets you there. Personally I'd never go again especially cause Dover is superior in the live experience in every way possible.

If I lived on the West Coast I would welcome earlier start times.

They have it perfect for NFL. The early games start at 10:00, afternoon starts at 1:00 and primetime starts at 5:15 so by the time the game ends it's only about 9:00

If it was Nascar start at 12:00 east, that way it begins at 9:00 on the west coast done by 12:00 ro 12:30 and you have the rest of the day to look forward to
Bingo

Been to pocono once, made the mistake of sitting in row 10. Got to watch turn three all day and that’s about it.

I honestly never had any trouble following the action at Pocono once they expanded the seating towards turn 3 and 1. I think the angle you get towards turn 1 is better. Pocono, Talladega, Daytona and Indy are all going to have varying levels of viewing pleasure. Indy is obviously the worst. The one common theme at all of them is the need to sit up high to have any chance of seeing 100% of the track. I've been to Daytona and Pocono. My $140 Daytona ticket offered about the same 90% view as my $80 Pocono ticket

I haven't had issues with traffic in 15-20 years at Pocono. Back in the day i use to be legendary and that was with half the seats. Up until 5-6 years ago it use to be a little slow getting in but getting out was all about hustling back to you car. If you got there super early to tailgate you were often burried. The later you got there the closer you were to the exits of the lots. That's the case every where. I honestly haven't dealt with traffic at Pocono, Dover, Michigan or Kentucky in the last 10 years. The last time I really remember battling traffic was Michigan in 2004.

No question Dover has some of the best sight lines in NASCAR.

Back when Pocono used to park you where the solar panels are now, the traffic to get out was horrific. Now it's very efficient.

We use to take the bus to Pocono in the 90's because the traffic was so bad. We did so in June 2000 but the race was rained out until Monday. Well the bus ride was only good for Sunday so we had to drive back the next day. This was the first time we'd drive to be Pocono in about 7 years (we live 45 minutes away) so we figured we take the "back way" which would bring is in by the tunnel turn. Well by coming in this way we were placed in those side lots you speak of. Since it was a Monday there were no parking lot attendants or anything. If you watch the opening of the telecast Eli Gould notes that 90% of the crowd returned. Pocono was a carnival that day with minimal security, no one checking tickets etc. Thankfully the race was a historically great one (Mayfield vs Sr.) because we literally sat in that parking lot for 2-3 hours without moving. We continued to drive but always came in 115 and stayed in the far right lane to be put in lot by turn 3.

I can't believe they used to run 500 laps here.

It was an absolute grind! Dover and Bristol were notorious for relief drivers back in the day. If you look at race times during the 500 mile days a lot of events approached 5 hours! The last 500 miler in the spring of of 1997 was a great one!!
