IIRC, the caution clock was set at 20 minutes.
I actually like the stages as an interesting tactical element, but a 20-minute caution clock eliminates all green-flag pit stops.

What I mean is that the caution clock disappeared into the bin of discarded experiments the year stages were born. I agree that the present stage configuration is superior to a clock, though I'd prefer they weren't there at all.
