Without a doubt it's Alan Gustafson, making a bonehead mistake by not knowing how to do basic math. McDowell a close second or maybe we even have a draw.
Sure but all resposibility is with him, I'm sure most crew chiefs double check such an important call and dont just run with it, it's a simple equation. It's INCREDIBLY hard to keep track of where everyone is on pit road and avoid becoming a speed bump while you're trying to execute a pit stop. The LAST thing any crew member needs is guys driving through a bunch of stalls, occupied or not. I wish we could have all pit roads long enough that you wouldn't have to drive through ANY stalls. I had words with a couple of crew chiefs about their drivers not respecting OUR space enough.Here's my assumption, and I know what they say about assumptions. This rule was created as a safety measure and to keep things fair when cars are going in and out of their pit boxes and you have a flurry of activity on pit rows between all the teams servicing their cars. The rule protected OTW crew that are already servicing the cars that are in their box, and it prevented cars from crashing into each other as they try to get in and out of their boxes.
With that assumption in mind, you would think NASCAR would give a little leeway for a box that wasn't being used by anyone, but I guess not.

EVERY crew chief has been bedeviled by bad information at one time or another. Remember what happened when you beloved Larry Mac sent someone else to go look at the weather radar? An easy 1 mil. The counterpoint would be that teams hire all of these engineers so the crew chiefs don't HAVE to distract themselves with doing fuel mileage calculations. If it is done correctly, the ONLY thing the crew chief needs to know about it is how many laps they could go. Gustafson never wavered on the radio while giving instructions to Chase, so it seems clear that he had total confidence in the number he was given. What is odd about the whole incident is that there were no cautions to skew the number, and Chase was pretty much balls to the wall the entire run, so the calculation SHOULD have been easy. It's funny you say that, because the thought DID cross my mind. I don't do Reddit, so I didn't see it suggested, but it's not out of the realm of possibility. I don't care how much of a hissy fit NASCAR throws, NONE of those cars are 100% legal. Heck, look at Byron. Four wins at the time and a crapload of bonus points, and they couldn't even get the 24 through inspection at Indy. With the stakes of making the playoffs as high as it is, I wouldn't rule anything out.
