By appearance alone, NASCAR is in bigger trouble than other sports

Interesting article.

But I'm still trying to figure out what Ryan McGee meant when commenting on the chances of Junior winning a race this year.

"Maybe he'll go on and win at Talladega and get the drama over with! If Bill France Jr. was still in charge, I would've already bet my truck on that one."

I think the question that needs to be debated is :

What percentage of the empty seats are -
A) Budget /Finance related or B - Don't like the sport anymore.

My unscientific guess would be 80% A 20% B

Also when the great recession ended, the online streaming options began
heating up.

I love NASCAR more than ever and I am an old timer but.....
I think the percentages are the reverse of what you said.
The tracks all have payment plans and with them most folks can
Truly afford the tiny monthly payments. So I can't see it being finance/budget
Related.

I don't know what the answer is but my guess is that if the main reason people did not attend Nascar races was cost the TV ratings would still be good and not be experiencing dramatic year over year losses. In other words a person may not be afford to attend a Nascar race but in most cases they can afford to watch the races on FOX and NBC (free) and a lot of the ones on cable/sat or stream. Speaking of streaming from the stats that have been posted here the number of Nascar streamers is minuscule compared to TV watchers.

IDK what the percentage is but from the available evidence it seems more like Nascar has taken a hit in popularity.

I know the tickets are very affordable these days.
Got you down for A - 20% B 80%. Thanks ahudsonman.

Sometimes I get caught in the " I cant be the only one" watching the live stream or
online stats . Oh and that reminds me - HD tv. That became more widely
avail post recession. HD flat screen tv plus your own fridge! Boom!

My opinion is closer to 50/50. As much as I respect Jimmie Johnson and believe him to be a great guy and world class wheelman, I honestly believe his domination greatly contributed to NASCAR's decline. It's as if the Yankees won 7 of the last dozen World Series or the Patriots won all 7 Super Bowls they played in since Tom Brady's rise to prominence. NASCAR needs a foil like:

and I believe the men to do it are:

Coulda been thinkin’ of Spencer in the summer race at ole ‘deger, mid nineties.

NJ - Interesting point on JJ dominance. When I compare the #3 dominance era to the #48
dominance era we are currently in, The 3 fan base was gigantic and ravenous. Not so much
for the 48. Different personalities. There are really so many different factors involved, I think
I just gave myself a headache.

I think Jimmie Johnson is a wonderful guy and a great ambassador for the sport but I think he and Chad were a little too dominant in the last decade or so. The best comparison to me, is when Roger Federer was dominating tennis. After a while, it's like, why watch? I know who's going to win. The rise of Rafael Nadal put Federer in check and I believe Kyle Busch, Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano will hold the fort against Jimmie's 8th Championship until the rise of the Young Guns (Larson, Elliot, Blaney, Jones, etc.)

Ahhh, many didn't think Jimmie and Chad were wonderful guys back then. They got caught cheating a number of times and it wasn't just Jimmie but the whole Hendrick organization, Mikey had his rocket fueled Yotas, the whole sport was made to look like a bunch of crooks were running the racing teams. Many complain about all the tech and the "box" they are in. But there are many reasons it has to be so.

Hopefully some of the initiatives that some of the tracks are implementing will resonate with young people and also be affordable for them. The racing this year has been good overall so when you see only 30K at Richmond it makes you scratch your head as if someone won't pay to see that what will they pay for?

Nobody with half a brain is gonna finance race tickets. Thats just asanine.

Right now Nascar needs all hands on deck as the need happy people and complainers to go to the track and tune in from home. Heck if there are aliens around that will buy tix or watch at home they need them too.

my state has before them a bill to extend the time and amount of payday loans right now..The state government has half a brain to even consider it. But yeah I can see somebody financing racing tickets.

I see $35 adult tickets for sale right now for Richmond's fall cutoff race. Sure, if someone's standards are higher, needing to purchase the best seat, the price will be higher. $35 seems like a bargain to me. I pay far more than that for a Pittsburgh Penguin's or Steeler's ticket.

When I watch sports I want my favorite team to win but I also just appreciate the games and talent on display even from the opposition. Watching Odell Beckham making ridiculous catches or Ben Rothlisberger and Aaron Rogers extend plays and hitting receivers is great to see even if it hurts my team.

While I wouldn't like to see the same driver or team win every week there is still a lot for me to like if the race is good. The race may not be for first place but there are a lot of other things to potentially take in.

and that is insane. Borrowing on Wed against Fridays paycheck which is already spent is what puts the money in the pockets of those 1% people who have more than they can ever spend.
That is also what hurts family life the most.

when I was a kid we would buy general admission and sit all over the place during the race, even made it into a skybox for awhile at Texas.

It is always sad when a person compounds poor choice upon poor choice as the ending is always bad.

In Mikey's book, he claims he has no idea where the "rocket fuel" came from. Regardless, it was an entertaining read.

Can we please merge this thread with the other one that just came out yesterday? There's little use in repeating the same stuff over and over and over and over.
I totally support and everything we hate about nascar sticky thread.

Lodging, location, food, etc...

You know Charlotte and Daytona may be on to something. Making these big common areas
for people to gather. You even see them in the outfields of new baseball stadiums. Some
are even putting in sections that have small tables/bars at them. In the new Daytona
stadium, they have groups of padded lounge chairs , phone charging stations, and
numerous flat screens.

The popularity of Nascar has tanked, it is no longer the "in thing", it had it's 15 minutes of fame and now it will continue to sink unless major changes are made to bring back the core fan base, not the casual fan.

The problem with this for racing (and I hesitate to say this given the talk of quieting the cars) is that NASCAR is too loud for this sort of environment. A race doesn't lend itself to the kind of quiet chatter and 'lazy day at the park' feel that you get at a baseball game.

Cheap seats at a nfl or baseball game still allows you to see the entire action and field. Nascar cheap seats may as well be in the parking lot. And worse yet is nascar's tv coverage. My original plan was 6 races after junior announced his retirement. But at $150 per race ticket, $500 for an airline ticket, $400 on a motel 100 miles from the track, and $300 to rent a car for the weekend, screw it. I'm heading to Daytona and Miami and that is it. Not even wasting money and time with the two closest tracks, Chicago and Kansas City.

Even at NFL, NBA, NHL games people are talking the entire time. Nobody is 100% engaged in the action for the entire event, and it's never been that way so don't say it's a millennial thing. The fact is people go to live sports to be social, because if your goal is to simply watch the action you can do that just fine from the couch. Now the new generation has grown up in a 24/7 socially connected environment and there's no way we'll give it up for four hours. Sorry, but paying hundreds of dollars to sit and wear dorky headphones in silence for hours on end not even being able to talk to my own family sitting next to me is stupid. Either muffle the cars until the headphones are obsolete or figure out some way to let fans talk openly to each other during the race.

As you know I pay more for our tickets for several reasons. I worked at the same job for 42 years and am at the age that sitting on an aluminum bench for hours isn't fun anymore. The extra money is earmarked for entertainment and doesn't take away from our other needs. Sitting in row 2 on a bench or in a suite has the same amount of enjoyment to me. Among a lot of other places I've sat in the grass at Eldora and a suite at Daytona and many places in between and enjoyed them all. I like the overall experience of spending a few day's at a race track with fans and friends no matter where I sit. :D

I am sure that if the response to these areas proves profitable we will see more of them pop up. Hopefully they will be geared toward younger people so they can bring groups of friends with them and not break the bank.

Your comments are so interesting to hear as I am 180 degrees the other way and I realize I am in the minority. The last Eagles game I went to I almost came to blows with my seatmates as they wouldn't shut up and were bugging me with really stupid stuff. We laugh about it now but at the time I could have killed them as I really like to concentrate on the game including things like formations, substitutions etc.

I totally get that if talking throughout a live event is important Nascar races are not compatible with that at this stage.

What you say makes total sense as the idea of sitting on a backless slab of concrete like I used to do at some tracks in not appealing anymore.
