I LOVE coloured NASCAR wheels.

FAV scheme of mine:

Do you like coloured wheels? what colour? why? tell me!

I look forward to reading the replies.

I do not like the colored wheels, but chrome is awesome. Fun thread BTW.

YES YES love the responses. Chrome wheels on the 3=classic.

Sharp cars!

I like chrome wheels but they are heavy. I had chrome summer wheels and alloy winter wheels on my previous daily driver.
When I switched between them I noticed the tranny had to learn new shift points and I noticed braking was different. The heavy chrome wheels caused more frequent brake pad changes.

I think they banned chrome wheels from racing because they could break - I don't recall if it was Indycar or NASCAR that discovered the problem.

I have and always have DESPISED the black wheels, and I can't understand why ANY team runs them. They look like total crap and make the cars look like total crap. In all the time I was racing, NOBODY could give me a good reason to use the black wheels, just that they did. Non-black wheels are one of the main reasons that the Penske cars look better than 95% of the other cars out there. On the handful of rare occasions Hendrick has used painted wheels,, it mad a HUGE difference in the appearance of the cars. I despise black wheels on street cars even more than on race cars. I wouldn't run black wheels on a damn wheelbarrow.

I think the ones now are powder coated

They are.

Chrome plating is not a good idea for any structural component on a race car because it can result in hydrogen embrittlement which can lead to cracking of the plated metal.

And it adds weight.

Definition is needed between the tire & wheel unless its Kurt's stealth look flat black #1.

Chrome = Hydrogen embrittlement it causes what is known as catastrophic fracture failure.

I believe that the chrome wheels used in 80's NASCAR also had issues with the wheel weights sliding on the wheel or actually flying off. Whatever they used on the MWR wheels (powdercoating?) looked just fine to me.

And nowadays the environmental requirements make having it done even more expensive than it was back in the day.

I liked the powder coated NAPA 55 that Michael drove in 2007, too bad Michael missed like 24 races, lol.

2007 was a damn strong year for the Cup field.

Unless my sponsor objected, I wouldn't paint my wheels at all. Adds weight and expense. NASCAR teams go through so many wheels so quickly that I doubt many wheels would have time to rust and get really ugly. But I was also a Jim Shampine fan - he didn't use to paint his cars at all (just put numbers and some sponsor decals on them), until the sanctioning body required him to start painting them...

I always loved the primer cars on the first day of practice.

All white. Only for day races tho. Miller Lite 2 car and MoneyLion 12 car at Phoenix.

My reasoning is the all white keeps it running cooler for day races deflecting sunlight. No data to back that up, vortex territory science.

As long as it’s aesthetically pleasing to the color scheme of the car

I agree with this. I like different color wheels ‘in moderation’. I wouldn’t want to see 35+ cars with all different color wheels.

If it truly fits the scheme then, it’s cool.

Yeah, sounds like a plausible theory to me. I bet that white is sooooooo much better at keeping the car cooler than the black ones.

You don't think that the wheels spinning round and round while on the cars wouldn't keep them cool?
Serious teams put their spare mounted wheels/tires in the shade or try to cover them, so the sun doesn't heat them up and raise the air pressure. Although if you have a driver like I had who was constantly playing with the air pressures then it really didn't matter...

I like colored wheels, I like black wheels, and sometimes I like chrome wheels, I do like when teams color match their wheels to the paint scheme .

I prefer Aero Wheels over Bassett Wheels

I remember a short time where Bassets were all the rage for reasons I don't remember, but very quickly fell out of favor. Working with low dollar ARCA teams in the early 2000's you would occasionally come across one, but nobody seemed to want to actually race with them. Sometimes they were just used to hold the car up for transport. I believe they may have had had cracking or balance issues.

I recall they were somewhat popular with a lot of the Truck Series teams in the early years of that series too, I think KBM uses them according to the Bassett website.

painted wheels just tie the look of the car together. Id like to see a monster energy car with florescent green wheels in NASCAR. flat black paint, green monster claw....

Used to be a lot of superstitious racers who didn't like green. Tommy Hinner****z used to paint his tools green so people wouldn't borrow them (and forget to return them). That might make a good reason to paint your wheels green...
