Chili Bowl 2021

Has anyone heard what the fan capacity might look like? I'm sure a state like Oklahoma will allow some fans but just generally curious as to how many.

25% capacity.

There are two ways to get in. Buying a traditional ticket with a seat assignment, or a pit pass. The seat sales are going to be limited to that parameter. Not sure on the pit passes.

This is a long story so if you don't have a lot of time to waste or if you get bored easy you may want to pass this one up. But, here is my last adventure to the Chili Bowl about 5 years ago when I was on the tow hook twice in one trip. "I love AAA". A buddy of mine wanted to go with me so I picked him up at his house here in southern Ca at 7.00 am on Thursday morning and we went over to the race shop and loaded our luggage into the trailer and checked that both midgets were fastened down, checked the tires and oil in the Ford crew cab and we headed eastbound with the hammer down. We checked into a hotel in Flagstaff Arizona that night and walked next door and had a nice dinner at the Cracker Barrel and then returned the next morning and had a nice breakfast at the cracker barrel before hitting the road. We made pretty good time until we hit New Mexico and then we had some snow to deal with for about 150 miles. That evening we stopped at a truck stop at the New Mexico / Texas state line to fuel up and when we went to pull out of the parking lot the transmission gave up on us. So I located a Ford dealership in Amarillo about 75 miles east and they said they could get me in first thing in the morning so I called AAA and a tow truck hooked us up and towed us to Amarillo. We unhooked the trailer and then all of us went and had some dinner before he dropped us off at a hotel. Early the next morning I had a cab take us to the dealership and they already had the truck up on the lift and was just pulling the pan off. It turned out to be a pump went out and trashed the transmission. We decided on a new transmission for $5,000 but they had to order it and the truck wouldn't be ready until the middle of the following week. So I signed the paper work and then got on the phone trying to find a pickup truck with a hitch to rent but there were none to be found with everyone closing at noon on a Saturday. After about 15 calls I finally found a towing company that had a crew cab dually with a hitch that would deliver us to the track in Tulsa 350 miles east for $2,000. Within an hour and a half we were on the road again heading east and arrived at the track around dark. After we dropped the trailer off at the track all 3 of us stopped and had dinner before he dropped us off at the hotel. The next morning I found a rental car place that was actually open on Sunday and called a cab to take me to get a car so we could go to the track to make sure the trailer got parked inside ok. So now that we have the trailer in Tulsa with no truck and I have to figure how I'm going to get the truck back when it is done. So the plan was going to be that my buddy and I would make the 700 mile round trip in the rental car either Wed or Thur to pick it up when it was done. Now here is where I am really glad that he came along because he is one of those kind of guys that can make friends with anyone and he did. He found a couple of racers that were there for the whole event just to hangout with one of their buddies that was racing and they had a crew cab dually with no trailer and they were going to be heading back home to Arizona on the Monday after the race and they said they would deliver us back to Amarillo. So they dropped us off in Amarillo on Mon afternoon and we hooked up and hammered down westbound. We stopped in Santa Rosa NM for the night and then got up early to finish the last leg of our trip. We stopped and fueled at the Pilot travel plaza about 20 miles west of Flagstaff that evening and when we started to leave the parking lot the engine shut off. It fired back up but it would shut off again. I checked everything I could check without a code scanner, so I found a shop in Flagstaff that said they could check it out the next morning. Time to call AAA again. So the guy hooks us up and delivers us to the shop and then drops us off at a hotel. Now this is the 3rd time a towing company has dropped us off at a hotel on this trip. The next morning the shop called and said the cam timing sensor was bad so a couple of hours later and $285.00 we were on the road again. The rest of the trip was smooth sailing and the the coolest part of the trip was meeting Danica Patrick. :)

That is awesome. AP is a very nice young man. While I was working for Jim Dunn racing Austin spent a lot of time in our pit because he was dating Jim Dunn's granddaughter...and when I say a lot I mean I think he was there more then he was in John Forces pit where he worked. It was funny watching this young shy kid when he first was trying to get her to go out with him after she had split up with Greg Andersons son. He brought that girl more flowers and presents then I have ever seen. He has a good memory, because when he was only around 8 years old and Eric Medlin and I raced slot cars together, Eric brought Jimmy Prock, his wife, Austin and his brother to the track here in California one day and I let Austin run my Budweiser King dragster. Last year when Austin went with all of us on the Dunn team to dinner one night at one of the races I asked him if he remembered that day and he remembered everything in great detail that went on that day and how excited he was to get to run the car...but he was very surprised to learn that it was mine.

The who's who bunch just showed up.

Obviously, the grandstands will have restrictions. Wonder how they will do the pits? People are usually packed in there like sardines.

Speaking of chili bowl... I just finished making a crockpot full of chili today, and now I have 10 bowls of fresh chili in the freezer to get me through this chili 74 degree winter. :D

Is there any suet in your chili?

Wondering about sufficient cholesterol.

I probably should have thrown a couple cholesterol pills in the pot for good measure. Maybe I will just mix it in with the sour cream and cheese. :)

Wow she has paid her dues.
