College Basketball 24-25

Thankfully I'm old enough to have seen three IU national championships because memories are all we have.

They are absolutely pathetic.

All that with a ~ $7M NIL roster.

Idk what the answer is at this point. Take a stab at Will Wade maybe.

And in case that isn't enough of a disgrace, IU is now trying to start a bench-clearing brawl.

Make it stop

It ain't the talent on the floor. They're very talented.
They certainly have the talent to be better than they actually are. Point being, expensive rosters don’t mean much if you don’t have the coaching to match. Arkansas is finding that out with Cal right now too. I never really understood the Woodson hiring to begin with, besides “Hoosier”.

First bid clinched goes to a first-time dancer.

Interesting to see the list of teams to never make it. Army probably being the biggest name.

Being a one bid conference and knowing how bad some of these teams are it doesn't surprise me how many America East teams have never made it, I mean that conference has been UVM's to lose for 15 years now.

Army is one of three OG’s around since the Tournament started who’ve never made it. There used to be four, but St. Francis (Brooklyn) shut down athletics after the ‘22-‘23 academic year. Army is a pretty unique case in that they had both Bob Knight and Coach K a few years each as well, although when the field was smaller.

A big part of it also is that there simply so many fresh D1 teams these days. 364 this season compared to 318 at the turn of the century.

High Point and North Alabama are playing for their first tourney bids this afternoon, and Omaha clinched their first last night in their semifinal since St. Thomas (MN) is ineligible as a transitioning D2 -> D1 school.

Duke is staying on top by backing the Brinks truck up to recruits' houses (legally now). Is NC doing the same?
Duke is a machine for sure, Flagg is obviously a generational talent but Knueppel is really freaking good too. UNC can recruit well but not #1 class each year like Scheyer is doing at Duke. I think UNC also whiffed in finding a good veteran big in the portal to replace Bacot.

If you’re a 5 or 6 seed you’re really hoping you don’t end up drawing Drake in the first round. Ben McCollum - what a coach.

Ugh UVM goes down to Maine in the America East semis to put an end to a just well below average year for us.

Sub .500 St. Francis PA makes the Dance from the NEC in a game that had a combined total of 89 points, great atmosphere in the arena last night too. The madness has definitely arrived in March.

UNC’s season potentially ending on a freaking lane violation…wow. Hard to believe.

Purdue got boat-raced last night.

The B1G has yet to have a competitive game.

Cooper Flagg is injured. The NCAA selection committee says it's no big deal because Duke says he will be good to go in the tournament.

Now, Duke wouldn't lie, would it?

Duke is going to end up on the 1 line either way, which is actually pretty dangerous if Flagg remains out since the 8/9 lines will be a lot more lethal than usual this season.

South Carolina State was in it's conference championship game playing for a ticket to the dance. They steal an inbounds pass and make a layup TO TIE THE SCORE with just a few seconds left. Then proceed to intentionally foul the opponent who hit a free throw and won the game.

:owquitit:

Duke is, on paper, the most efficient team of the 21st century. Unfortunately for them, the rest of the top 5-6 teams also make up the most efficient top group of this century, rivaled only by the 2015 and 2019 tourney fields. Flagg’s health is also a question mark, and the ACC is dreadful enough that they haven’t played elite competition in over three months now.

I’d be pissed if I were Auburn and had to potentially play a Louisville team seeded three lines too low in Lexington.

UNC’s AD being the chairman of the selection committee is egregious. No active ADs should be on the committee. Even if you have to recuse yourself during discussions about your school, are all the other members you spend time with going to vote against your interests?

The SEC getting 14/16 teams in is overkill as well. 12 or even 13 would’ve been understandable.

Whole lotta teams/seeds I could question but write them off as differences of opinion. But NC getting in smells.

And the SEC was clearly the best conference. Not saying they deserved 14 teams but thought I'd throw it out.

I don't usually follow the sports talk buzz but I heard someone official last week saying they are wanting to extend the tournament to 76 bids.

That just seems stupid to me,.but I didn't care for it when they front 48 to 64 either.

I do think overexposure can be damaging.

West Virginia was literally included on 111 of 111 bracket projections on the Bracket Project. Every “bracketologist”, professional or amateur, had WVU solidly in. One of the biggest snubs ever.

This season’s SEC is arguably the greatest basketball conference ever, but 14 teams stinks to me. I don’t have so much an issue with Arkansas, and even Oklahoma has a case (although should’ve been in the First Four at best), but Texas reeks.

North Carolina just got in with one whole win against the rest of the tournament field (vs. UCLA in December). If they want to expand to 76 hard enough - and greed means they likely will eventually - the regular season won’t mean much at all for power conference teams. You could make arguments for Boise or UC Irvine right now, but add another eight and they’ll be finding ways to let Penn State or Wake Forest in. But that’s the way major sports is trending in general.
