DAYTONA BEACH, Fla - At least pro golfer Bubba Watson's tenure as an honorary NASCAR race official made it into a press release.
That's about as far as it will go, however.
Plans have been scrapped to have Watson drive a parade lap around Phoenix International Raceway in the original General Lee car from the show "The Dukes of Hazzard" prior to the start of the March 4 Sprint Cup Series race at the track in Avondale, Ariz.
The problem is not Watson or his car, but the Confederate flag image on its hood.
"NASCAR, International Speedway Corp. and Phoenix International Raceway officials discussed this and decided it was not in the best interest of our sport," NASCAR spokesman David Higdon said Friday.
"The image of the Confederate flag is not something that should play an official role in our sport as we continue to reach out to new fans and make NASCAR more inclusive."
PIR officials planned to release a statement about the decision later Friday.
On Thursday, Watson posted the following message on his Twitter account:
"Sorry to say @nascar won't let me drive The General Lee at the @PhoenixRaceway !!! #dreamcrushed"
News releases about Watson's appearance at the track had already been removed from the track's Web site by Friday morning.

Political Correctness Strikes Again! :( Good lord people get over it! It's history not a representation of anyones beliefs or ideals.

It's kind of hard to seperate the confederacy from slavery, since it was created as a rallying point in the fight to keep slavery alive. I can understand why it's so offensive to many of the fans and drivers NASCAR is trying to attract.

I am against political correctness for PC sake. But in this case, Flash, I have to agree with NA$$CAR. That image is historical, you are right. But it stands for bigotry, hatred, segregation and exclusion. I agree that that image should not be allowed to have a place in NA$$CAR.

If a fan chooses to fly the Rebel Flag in the infield at Talladega, so be it. I suppose that anyone who chose to could also fly a Nazi Swastika flag, right? When you get right down to it, there is not a lot of difference between the two...

Some people just need to get over it.

Just THE good ol' boys
Never meaning no harm
Beats all you never saw, geting in trouble with the law
Since the day they was born

Straightenin' the curves
Flattenin' the hills
Someday the mountain might do'em
But the law never will

Making their way, the only way they know how
That's just a little bit more than the law will allow

Chorus.

I'm a good ol' boy
You know my mama loved me
But she don't understand they keep a showin my HANDS
And not my face on TV

Just good ol' boys,
Wouldn't change if they could,
Fightin' the system like a true modern day Robin Hood.

Anyone who flies a nazi flag, no matter where, ought to be gut shot with a .45 hollow point right then and there.
I'm just sayin'.

Thought na$car had requested the rebel flag not to be flown in the infield????

Lots of folks feel the same way about the Stars and Bars...

There is a thing called the First Ammendment to take into corn-sider-ashun. NA$$CAR can ask but I doubt that they can do anything if someone wants to fly the flag.

The American Civil War was in the early 1860's thats 151 years ago no one is still alive that fought in it or was a slave during that time. ( Side note slavery was common in Non-Confederate states also ) It's time people grew up got over crap that dosent effect them and live life with out carrying on about what who did to who when it has no effect on them.
The flag image painted on top the car is from a TV show that symbolized nothing about hatred or slavery.
Get over it people! It's just a cool old car with a TV history.

So really what are they? do you have documented proof that the Dukes of Hazard show was Racist? full of Hatred? involved in Bigotry or slavery? Lets see it.
Oh and before you go into me being a southern redneck or someother ignorant crap....... I'm from Dearborn Michigan.

I get it. You're under the impression that we're talking about a Dukes of Hazard flag.

If somebody was flying a NAZI flag, why don't they get their hitler loving ass kicked? But darnit, it's the home of the free, right? Wierd, so many double edged swords.

Who was it who said, "In the battle of wits you're an unarmed man?"

Oscar Wilde - and robbybee in response to this absurd post...

It's a car from a TV show it makes no statement other than the ones people pin on it.
My point is that actions of people 150 years ago are over it's in the past it's history and time for people to get over it and move on, Not continue to perpetuate the Hate.

Sir, please back away from the keyboard.

OMG, put some friggin cars on the track before I start yelling at myself just for fun. :director:

I can't remember the exact year or driver but Nascar disallowed a paint scheme with the flag in the 70 or 80s.

In those day you had more independents or privateers, and one of them wanted to run at Darlington that way.
I am sure some did in the 50s.

Right or wrong it is not going to sell in nascars corporate structure. When the corporate pimps own you, just be vanilla, and act like you enjoy it, cause they can find some one else to smile if you don't.

Really the sacred cloth with eternal spiritual value was them Daisy Dukes 'mine eyes has seen the glory' of the south.I

Hells Yeah!

Now THAT is something that every red-blooded hetero-sexual American Male can agree upon!

That settles it. Rip the flag off and put Daisys Ta-Ta's on the car. That will make 49% of the population happy, which is pretty good these days.

Confederate flag=pro-slavery and racism. It has no place in our country. I'm glad NASCAR rejected this garbage.

Gone are the days of the Rebel 500 and the Southern 500 at Darlington because they were all about racism and not racing.

Actually, the 1st amendment only applies to the government, not private entities like NASCAR. NASCAR is well within their right to deny someone the "right" to put the Stars and Bars on their car.

As for the issue itself, honestly I think NASCAR made the right call. I mean people outside the sport already think we're dumb ignorant bigoted rednecks, do we really want to give them ammo regarding that?

Bubba Watson, never took a lesson in how to GOLF. Never watched his own swing on video.

Special, I think so. The car, who cares. It never happened.

Denny Hamlin was Bubba's caddy for the putting competition I thinks.

Isn't it great that no one (as of yet) is offended by the Checker Flag. Of course I think there were many JG and JJ fans offended by the Yellow flag last week.

Okay I'll say it before one of the jr haters jumps in........Could Jr. be offended by the Checkered Flag???

NASCAR is not the government. NASCAR has every right to reject someone being grand marshall because they're flying a confederate flag, just like an employer has the right to fire you if you come in to work and make a bunch of racist statements.

But if some fans in the infield want to fly the flag, I would think that they could.

AGREED! And I think that NA$$CAR made the right call in saying no to The General.

BTW, who dredged up this thread?? lol

ahhhh...I see now. It was that Golf Fan, DPK!

Eh I'm not too familiar with NASCAR infield policy, so I can't really comment on that. Let's be honest, NASCAR is first and foremost a business. It may have started out with a few country boys racing around a dirt oval, but it's now a business. The fact that it is a business means they are in it to make money, and the Confederate flag can cost them money.

Don't like it? Then don't watch any NASCAR sanctioned events or buy their merchandise.
