COVID-19 and sports: Latest news and information (updated)

Starting to dip into mid-July now. Not even without fans? I don't know. I thought Summer time was supposed to have a strong likelihood of burning this thing off? I guess they have deadlines leading up. But man, we're talking almost 4 months out. I saw some comments about insurance money if they cancelled in time and international travel obviously for the Open a prime concern.

Been so long since I've played HORSE. Will they get to call backboard or swish?

Playing HORSE back in the day in my home court.
The backboard was mounted on a 4"x4" pole and it would give when the ball hit it hard. I remember doing many hook shots simply by firing a line drive just above the rim. The whole backboard would give and absorb the impact and the ball would softly drop through the net leaving me amazed at what a special set of skills I thought I possessed.

The old backboard and rim could have told a lot of stories. My neighbor who previously owned the backboard was a friend of my dads and they use to play a lot of backyard basketball games.
At least eight grown men playing a half court game several days a week all for the Pabst Blue ribbon glory. I was just a boy and they were all bigger than life to me, it might as well have been the NBA to me as I watched.

Gary was a gambler and when there wasn't enough for a good half court game he would be betting others. They were the backyard games of HORSE or for the best of ten from the foul line. The inglorious bets he lost were the talk of the neighborhood, eventually Gary and his wife divorced, and he moved away.

His wife gave me the backboard and rim and I put it up in my own backyard. All I used was some hole diggers with very little cement, and that was the secret to my hook shot.

Pepperidge Farms does not remember, but I remember....

Baseball is happening!

"The plan, sources said, would dictate that all 30 teams play games at stadiums with no fans in the greater Phoenix area, including the Arizona Diamondbacks' Chase Field, 10 spring training facilities and perhaps other nearby fields. Players, coaching staffs and other essential personnel would be sequestered at local hotels, where they would live in relative isolation and travel only to and from the stadium."

"The May return date depends on a number of concerns being allayed, and some officials believe a June opening day could be more realistic, sources said. Most important would be a significant increase in available coronavirus tests with a quick turnaround time, which sources familiar with the plan believe will happen by early May and allow MLB's testing not to diminish access for the general public."

Aggressive move to try and get their season going.

If they do it that will probably start a avalanche of other sports trying to do the same thing.

I love sports as much or probably more than the next guy but I think the idea to start MLB in the above described manner is completely ridiculous. The amount of constant testing of all involved would be never ending and at the expense of the general public being tested. I'd like to see America get started before worrying about who's leading in the standings.

There's no social distancing in baseball!

I think no matter what happens "they" meaning almost all sports are going to have problems getting fans to return to the stands. Baseball stadiums are mostly deserted anyway

Third round of The Masters same day as the Tennessee @ Georgia game...oh, man. That’ll be interesting.

Will be interesting to see how FOX and CBS handle the US Open and Masters against their college football and NFL obligations too. A lot to juggle if we wind up with sports this fall.

Yep if, when Fall flu season rolls back around again, if we don't have a vaccine for covid by then, or the numbers haven't completely tailed off beyond concern, I don't know how Football and the Masters will go off without a hitch either. Who's going to want to voluntarily go back into a crowd? Especially if you're 60+.

Lots of unknowns

Very well said.

Most Bundesliga teams have resumed pratice this week. Players only practiced in small groups and they were not allowed to touch the ball with their hands.

The DFL is planning to resume play in the Bundesliga (and the 2nd league) without spectators on May 9.
It is feared that 13 of the 36 teams would become insolvent if the season is not resumed.

I mean they aren't supposed to use their hands anyway...

I bet scoring will be up if goalies can't touch the ball.

I think the goalies need to use gloves from the hockey goalies. Without a stadium full of singing drunks I don't know how it will play out on TV. Maybe they can pipe some crowd sounds in.

Well, it would certainly make things a little more interesting.
I don't see it happening, btw. They'd have to test all players, coaches, team employees and their relatives several times a week.

It would be a weird atmosphere.
There will be about 30 million watching the games on TV (if Sky chooses to broadcast free-to-air), but the emotion will be gone.

So the people who got suspended from the MLB stemming from the Astros scandal are basically given a free ride to come back when the league comes back.

MLB said the ongoing crisis has no barring on their suspension. That's BS.
I ****** hate Manfred. Useless piece of ****.

The PGA plans to get back to competition the week of June 8-14, with the first four events without fans...tentatively that would bring fans back the week of July 6-12. I think that part at least will get pushed back further as more information comes available.

An eventful few days for the NBA as the league and its franchises evaluate whether or not it’s even safe to send personnel back to their facilities.
