Cup RACE thread --- Bristol

Love or hate Denny Hamlin (I’m the latter)

He’s this generations mark Martin. Hands down the best driver to never win a title. He drove a masterful race.

But still Denny Hamlin

I'm good man. The 5 was better than he ran all day..that's all I'm saying. Last week was a spanking

So was the 9, but you’re as good as your results. And we’ve effing SUCKED for two seasons now almost. We deserve all the shade that’s thrown at us. Maybe it’ll lighten the 9 bandwagon, me included at this point. If he’s a non-factor again at COTA, I agree with the DBC guys: hit that panic button.

Most drivers: This is a ton of fun.

Kyle Larson: I never want to do this again.
This was just a continuation of the race..

I had his radio on the entire race. Was moody after that first run. Was absolutely miserable asking Cliff how fast the leaders the prior run were running, and was pissy about "running too slow to know my balance"

Hell, the final run, he asked if there was anyone behind the 48 for position, with the 48 being over a second back. 1 lap later, the 48 was by him.

Dude sounded relieved when he was penalized.

Larson loves Bristol. He was absolutely miserable not being able to run a single lap hard. It was hilarious and Cliff kept on him.

Old school race.

I think these guys just want to be able to settle in and go to work. Today didn't allow for that at all. They like tire wear but this was to an extreme level.
Everyone will rave about tire wear and old Bristol, but, if we’re honest with ourselves, after about 50 laps this was the Daytona 500 again: run 30-50% at best and ride it out. STILL… it’s an improvement. Keep going this direction.

I think these guys wanted to be able to run hard, for the first time in years at Bristol day.

Didn't get to do that. It's no shocker Hamlin rose and Gibbs fell

Broadcast blew him up, but Gibbs wasn't ready for that.

Chase ran fine today until it became tire conservation mode. HMS cars are fast, Chase too..

They just werent prepared today..

Bowman was the perfect level of mediocre where he could just quietly run p15 all day and tire manage his way into p5

To me, there's a big difference between running at 50% to save your equipment and use it later, vs to not get 'too far in front' and have the draft overhaul you.

This was 08 Indy prevention rather than pure tirewear

"Old school" Bristol and tirewear is about managing pace.

This wasn't that. This was crisis management.. still technically tire management.

If this was 10/10 tire wear, 8.5/10 would have been perfect. Race was great. But I think these guys should be able to run the first 10 laps of a tire run hard without worrying about tires coming apart by lap 50.

Best we've had in years, and absolutely a step in the right direction.

This wasn't "save your equipment and use it later"

This was "Dave your equipment so we don't self destruct into 08 Indy"

Absolutely in the right direction. But this was crisis management FAR more than it was pace management..

I'd prefer this to the short track racing we've seen, but would like it dialed back JUST a little bit, so cars could run hard for 10-15 laps without it being catastrophic at the end of the run.

Was still great though

You know, Denny Hamlin being an asshat makes it easy to ignore the fact that he's been one of the greatest drivers, and smartest drivers this sport has ever seen.

I appreciate greatness and there's a part of me that hopes he wins a championship before he retites. He's a championship away from being one of the 15 greatest ever

Glad you think so.

Some of us are aware that he's an all-time great.

I know I can adjust how quickly tires wear on some of the PS2 games, so I’d imagine they can do the same on the sims. If so, the drivers had better get to work. Fan response seems super positive, so I expect a very similar race next year. If I had the funds, I’d already be planning a trip to Bristol for next year.

“Champion” just doesn’t have the same luster that it used to have.

I doubt we’ll see this compound again anytime soon.

Next year? Try this fall

Someone isn't happy about today's winner.

No bud I don't agree with your assessment of Hamlin's greatness is all. It's just that simple. Amused at the reception ol' Hambone got at the finish line. He earned every boo. I thought he had a good chance of winning the race and so he did. On to COTA, highly doubt he will be a factor there.

I agree he earned every boo. It's why I said he's an asshat.

Seems like I wasn't the only one...

They ran at reduced speeds at Daytona because they wanted to save fuel, they didn't have to. Today if they ran a reduced pace because they had to, if they didn't they would be in the fence.
