Cup RACE thread --- Bristol

Here I'll do it for you, took all of a whole minute. There are many more articles saying the same thing.

Five of HendrickCars.com’s six highest-traffic days of the year have been attributed to its sponsorship of the No. 5 team, including four Cup Series race days when Larson led the most laps or won. In February, the reveal of the HendrickCars.com paint scheme drove the site’s highest one-day visitor count in more than 12 months. Since then, it has seen significant increases in overall traffic (up 27%), vehicle sales leads (up 18%), digital retail leads (up 37%) and trade evaluations (up 61%).

You clearly are missing what I am saying. I can find an article online that says my dog is plotting my death if I want to. I am also not saying there is no benefit it in for Hendrick. I just think there might be more to the story than is being put out there. I don't believe in coincidence and it seems amazing that MR H decided to go this route right after he hired a driver who could be accused of being a racist. When KK drove that 5 it was with sponsorship that he brought with him like from Great Clips and it was rare that Hendrick's name was on it. It seems to be the best solution possible to say "oh yeah it's making me lots of money and I am turning down sponsorship offers" than to have to admit it's been hard to find a sponsor for a guy who used the N word for the whole world to hear. I have a friend who makes his living by "reporting" on what he finds online to support his political beliefs but for every point he makes there is either no concrete "proof" or just an article online that there is no way to prove or disprove to "support" his theory. I choose to believe there is usually more to the story then what is put out there. Your opinion is different than mine. At some point you just have to agree to disagree and move on. I don't even have a great dislike for Larson. I think he's a top-notch talent that deserved another chance regardless of the mistake he made and it's cool to see him make the most of it but I can't shake the feeling here that there is this effort to disregard anything he does wrong or questionable things he says and put him on a pedestal. Oh well. If you want the last word.....it's all yours. Moving on. :)

I am calling BS on your claims that you actually like Larson and that you believed he deserved another chance.
You seem fixated on what he foolishly said five years ago and no you do not want to let it go. I think you will just pause to save some credibility and be hitting on it again very soon.

Disclosure: I guess Larson is my favorite but that part is no big deal to me, I dont own any of his souvenirs.
Doesnt bother me if people dont him, as a Dale Earnhardt fan I loved the way people hated on him, it was entertaining, at least they could admit to how they really felt.

I would have given more thoughtful insight into what the poster was trying to say but they played all my favorite songs about Larson ( what Larson said in 2020, how he got a job after it, no companies wanted to sponsor him) and after that it was really rather easy to see through. Just say what you mean instead of burying it around nonsense. Just my two cents though, but you eloquently summed up what I was thinking.

HAHAHAHA...Interesting. I give an honest opinion on a couple things like it surprised me that everyone seemed to forget about his mistake so quickly and that it COULD be the reason that 5 car has no major sponsorship deal (regardless of what HMS is putting out there) and I note that I wish he had kept his negative comments to himself as a face of the sport and you come back with saying you call BS on me not liking him? That's it? So now you know who I like and who I don't? Larson is a driver I am totally neutral on. I think every Larson fan out there who wants to go on and on about how talented he is should be grateful for the 2021 because outside of that amazing year he has largely under achieved for being so talented as many are quick to point out. There was not enough criticism for his 20222 season in which he failed to make the round of 8. Either way though, regardless of what you think, I don't dislike the guy. I respect the sport and the fact that it needs talents like his. He just needs to learn to be a better ambassador of the sport and not act like he is above it or what he wants should trump everything. The reviews of the Bristol race are that the vast majority of fans and drivers loved it. Hell, my phone was blowing up all week from family and friends about it that normally have a hard time even getting through a race anymore and then you have the supposedly most talented driver in the field come out with this:

Yeah - he tried to retcon it but too late.

I’ve always wondered that myself
The track in the background where they are standing look to me like it OCULD be Darlington which would make sense because a lot of faming did take place there but the track the car was on did not appear to be Darlington to me.

Crap, I thought I read a post where you said it was time to move on.

The seats at Darlington were built on concrete. You can see light between the benches in this photo.

YA and I meant I was not going to keep going back and forth about Larson's sponsorship and whatnot. The accusation that I have dislike for Larson is a different subject really. He does annoy me at times but my favorite driver does that to me sometimes as well....Like when Chase rips on himself endlessly. He is better in that area but still does it from time to time.

..... Larson finished right around where he ran most of the day. If he has a problem with that then he should just walk. Many will not miss him.

....He comes across as hypocritical honestly
.... If this is not his thing - there's the door and don't let it hit you in the ass on the way out. The sport was fine without him in 2020. On that note - in this cancel culture world I am still in disbelief of how quickly he got his job back and everyone seemed to forget about his use of a word that has no place in society.

That is just a small sample, and some things are self evident. If you want to run a crusade against than more power to you and you certainly have a right to your opinions.

Maybe I am just to simple but it is a confusing read to me. I just dont get why you try to walk it back after making your thoughts about him so clear.

It's common, I'm not playing.

I want to hate him. As a Chase Elliott fan I have plenty of reason to. At the 600 this year he was quick to call out Chase for a "tantrum" and successfully lobbied to get hi suspended. He did however, forget to mention that he ran Chase into the wall twice in the laps leading to that and at least acknowledge Chase had right to be pissed. I sense some jealousy of Chase from Hamlin because Chase already has that elusive cup title. All this said though, it's hard for me to hate a guy that does do a lot for the sport and is as talented as Denny. I actually hate Larson more. LOL[/QUOTE

You and Greg can keep slurping each other but it does not change the fact that you don't know what another person feels. I will put out there how I feel about something and one thing I can always promise is that I say exactly what I feel. Just because I pointed out that he said something that in my opinion (and the opinion of many others as well) that he should not have said in that moment and that I am surprised how quickly the world seemed to forget about his use of the N word when that has destroyed other people for good does not mean I dislike him. Like I said - totally neutral on him. I am fan of Chase's but there are times that I don't like thing she says. When I was a fan of Kasey Kahne I was annoyed with him when he tweeted complaining about a woman breast feeding public.

Did you catch the LOL after that? It was a jab because I had mentioned in another conversation about Larson using Chase up twice to win in 2022. I think if I can't find a way to hate Hamlin no matter how much I want to at times - So glad his father told him to stop with the whole "I beat your favorite driver" line - I would have an even harder time hating Larson.

This whole topic is funny to me because I spent a lot of time in my youth HATING other drivers. Man I hated Jeff Gordon in the 90's and I hated Dale Earnhardt to the end. But what's funny is that as you grow up in life and mature you learn a couple things. Hating someone takes a lot of work and there's the old quote that "when you hate the only one who suffers is you because most people you hate don't know it and the rest don't care." The other thing that happens when you mature is that you come to have an appreciation of things. I was not a Dale Earnhardt fan growing up but I wish I had enjoyed more that I got to watch him race. My son will never know that.

So to sum it up - Do I "hate" Larson? No? Am I fan of him as person? Meh. Do I have respect and appreciation for his talent to become one of the all-time greats? No question yes. I just wish he (and some of his fans) would remember he is not the only talented driver on the track.

20? Was it that long ago? I didn't look it up but 2 things there. Indy is higher speed and flat so harder on tires plus 11 laps there is 27.5 miles so not that far off in distance to what they were running a lot of the day yesterday.
Definitely wasn’t 20 years ago, but SOI is probably just using hyperbole with that since its more like, 16 I believe. But yeah this was different in the fact that no matter what people did at Indy, the tires was just going and ripping apart. Here if you managed it correctly, you could go a bit longer and further.

Yeah true. I really don't remember much except that they had to pit like every 11-12 laps. Either way though, NASCAR needs more of this and less of races like Phoenix which really has been the only dud so far. I am not a huge fan of speedway racing but at least there is some question as to who will win. NASCAR needs to get their showcase championship finale OUT of arguably their most boring track where some teams like Toyota are super-focused on developing speed for that type of track making those races even more BORING. Imagine of the finale was a race like we had a Bristol this past weekend. That would be edge of your seat who is going to win the title right to the last minute and it would be more in the driver's hands - not the car like it has been to this point. Chase won in 2020, Larson in 2021 and since then the Fords and Toyotas have nailed down that type of track and the others have NO CHANCE much like the Fords and Toyotas in 2020 and 2021. That's not good for your finale. Also imagine if the finish in Atlanta was 3-wide to the line with 3 Championship contenders. That would still be getting talked about now if it happened in November. I know it's a fine line between manufacturing drama and not but either way it's hard to argue that Phoenix is terrible. I live right near its sister track Loudon and it's painful to sit through at times.

Unfortunately the last race is not about what you or I think is in an exciting track that makes exciting racing. It's about the how the product comes off on TV as a showcase event and its sponsors as well as what the TV networks want.

I'm glad to see someone who thinks about a response for a while, instead of just posting the first thing that popped into his head five weeks ago.

For some reason that popped up as something I hadn’t seen, I didn’t bother to check the date of the initial posts. Apologies for bringing up this thread up again from 5 weeks ago as I thought it was current. That’s what I get for not paying attention

Are you saying Phoenix comes off a good TV showcase and the networks WANT a boring Championship race? I have to disagree if so. Phoenix should almost be the last place they run this the finale. It's boring and has no long-term historical significance to NASCAR. All these races into the season and I would still argue that Phoenix has been the only really bad race.
