Cup RACE thread --- COTA

So, what you’re saying is, you should have the right to whine about NBC, but no one should have the right to whine about Fox? Actually no what, don’t answer that because I’m done. Unlike you ;) I actually mean it and won’t reply if you do.
Wrong. Perfectly ok to not care for both.

Unfortunately, that meant our Row 2 parking spot from getting there early meant most everyone else got to leave first.
I've been known to go back about an hour before green and move the car out closer to the exit. I can walk faster then most and can get there before the congestion starts.

I made the same mistake at Darlington last year. They did the same thing. I didn’t move for almost 2 hours.
Out of parking and on the road last May in 20 minutes after ther green dropped, 15 of them walking time to the car. It also helps to know the back way in from Columbia.

He’s not wrong tbh. Fox does suck.

I just find it funny some of the people who hate Andy complaining about Fox, will turn around and do it when it’s NBC’s part of the season, and they don’t see it as being the same thing, when it literally is. Now that’s not everyone, they are some who’s annoyed by Andy who don’t bitch later in the season themselves, but the ones who do give me a good laugh because it’s like they are literally what they hate when Andy’s doing it.
Fox is pretty bad. They seem to miss a lot of stuff that if not for X or other media I would not know about. Plus I am not digging the chemistry between Clint and Harvick. They seem to talk over each other a lot while at the same time not saying much. I won't complain about NBC until I have a reason to this season though. Either way, long gone are the day of GOLD we used to get with Bob Jenkins and Benny Parsons and other guys like Ken Squire.

Not a bad race overall. More of an F1 type race to me. Would love to have seen tires mean something though - not like Bristol last week but just more wear would have been good. I think a caution or 2 in the last stage would have made it more interesting. I was very surprised by the lack of speed from the 5. He got spun fairly early on and never made ground back. Of course in total fairness he could have had an issued I was not aware of. I was really annoyed with the penalty Chase got. I know I am biased of course but to me there is a difference between going out of bounds to cut the corner to gain an advantage VS getting loose and sliding out of bounds. The video showed this so NASCAR could have made a judgment call on that but they are in the position of being accused of favoring the so-called "Golden Boy." Either way, it was nice to see he had that speed and would have likely had a top 5 run if not for that. He made a mistake yes - pushed a little too hard but to me that's what we want to see is drivers pushing it. I am not terribly excited for Richmond next week as I was at this race a year ago and it was a total snoozefest to the point where my Nephew who lives less than an hour from the track said he'd never go back. Plus Chase has not had speed there in a while. Hopefully at least they will bring a tire that wears good.

CBell was a wrecking ball at COTA. He wrecked Larson AND Busch. The little prick one got behind Byron and tried to push him off the course in turn one, but Byron came back and passed his ass. I don't think I have ever seen the rice burners so desperate. Dominating win by Byron.

Getting Clint Bowyer out of the booth would be a dramatic improvement.

The biggest problem with Fox is the overall presentation. They were playing around with so many toys yesterday that the graphics were honestly outright distracting. And some of these segments just made me sigh. ****, I don't think they ever displayed the full starting lineup before the race went green. Not even on the pylon.

BS. Bell had the best car all day. Willy B. and his team managed the race perfectly. Busch and Larson were in the way. Kyle is bubbling. We have seen this before. One week storms off. The next it's somebody else's fault. If I remember it correctly, he should be taking a punch to the face soon....and then his crew chief and team will abandon him.

The best car is the one in victory lane and that was William Byron who also led the most laps from the pole to the winners circle.

Typical Kyle Busch. Takes himself out by trying to clear himself off someone's front bumper and it's never his fault.

The only reason people like him now is because he drives for Chevrolet.

NASCAR doesn't need to go to COTA, a street course and a roval track every year. Pick two of the three. I'd prefer to see Road America back on the schedule.

True statement. This is another race that Chevy won not because of having the best car

True statement. Bell did have the best car just did not run a mistake free race and strategy did not work very well. Byron had a great car yes and on new tires in clean air he could take off. This is another race where Chevy won yes but the raw speed was lacking for most except Byron. Calling it now - Next week's race is very appropriately sponsored as it will be the Toyotas and everyone else. If someone told me now Chase would finish between 10th and 15th I'd be happy with that.

It feels like NASCAR is chasing a moving target of their own making. At end of the last gen car the road courses were producing some of the best racing. Cars could pass. So they have more road courses now and the racing on them has declined with this new car. Yesterday's race was not terrible but just kind of "meh" that only true race fans could appreciate. It is slightly improved form last year as far as passing but still not great.

You poor fellows have been listening too much to Toyota Clint. I understand grasping at straws with the "best car" B.S. but here are the facts not some made up fairy tale.

Pole, laps led AND win the for the 24 car

Eh the 24 was in fuel saving mode and the 20 was giving it all he had while Toyota Clint and the rest of the booth were trying to make good TV out of it. But this best car B.S. is over the top lol. Byron kicked their butts all day long.

Byron had a great car and track position all day and the best execution with a killer pit stop to win it at the end. Usually that equals a win. Bell had a great car but was lacking in the other areas.

Bell’s pit crew cost him yet another win. 3 seconds slower on the final stop. That was the difference.

In the great words of Kez......Kyle Busch is an ass. CBell just accelerated the inevitable.....a Rowdy spin.

Bell looked like he was going to cry when Busch got in his face, but I really admire the way Bell handled the situation.

^ fixed that for ya

It doesn’t really matter who had the best car. What matters is who crossed the finish line first. That’s who will be remembered. Your baseball team can have all of the better players on it, but who wins the World Series is who will be remembered years later.

I couldn't agree more.

I mean, you do understand what Adam was doing with winning Stage 1, right. Tell me you understand that. Tell me that you understand that given that disadvantage Bell took the best car, and damn near won anyway. You do understand this right? And you do understand that you don't have to have the best car to win, right?

I’m seeing a lot of hate on this race on social media. Fact is, if they replaced the cup cars with F1 cars and they had the exact same race as today, where someone ran long and got within half a second of the dominant car at the end for the win, it would be race of the year in F1. This is as good as road racing gets.
No cautions for cause, multiple strategies, critical green flag pit stops, and it ended with the top two cars converging within a second on the final lap. That’s really as good as it gets! Byron was out front a lot, but there was plenty going on inside the top 5/10 most of the race.

Busch looked like he was trying to cut the exit at a different angle than usual at T1, maybe to try to get a crossover opportunity on Reddick. Don’t think Bell was anticipating that and took the corner as he normally would. Unfortunate but nothing more than a racing incident I think.

Nah man I don't understand. I just saw Byron passing him on his way to leading the most laps and winning the race in dominating fashion. :idunno:

That's a fair point and I agree with it but if someone asks me who had the most raw speed on Sunday, right now, while the race is still fresh in my head I will say Bell did regardless of how many laps Byron led or where they finished. Bell's strategy did not work out well and he started further behind and did not have track position most of the day because of the strategy they went with and to top it all off his crew choked at the end and with that he STILL almost was able to pull it off. There is no question Byron had a great car (all the HMS cars had speed except Larson?) but the race and strategy also played out perfectly for him and his crew did not choke at the end which equals win. You are right though,no one will remember that Bell had the best car and probably should have won if his team executed better.

....and that strategy was dictated by the fact that Bell had a win, and wanted the Playoff point. In all honesty, Byron's strategy was just a bit better as he was in the same boat as Bell, but got the 5 Playoff points at the end of the day. This is a strategy that I have seen Adam use before (Sonoma, 2019), and again he came up a bit short with it....but so close. Fascinating stuff.
