Cup RACE thread --- Daytona

Quite unexpectedly I watched the first half of the race with a newbie and he had all sorts of different questions and comments. In no particular order:

Why do 2 of the announcers keep talking about certain cars having energy?

Why do they stop the race for no reason? (he meant stages)

Why are the cars stuck together?

Don't the drivers get hurt?

This isn't safe

Why don't the replays show what happened? Don't they have enough cameras or are the cars going too fast?

Why do cars keep getting flats?

In the second part why did they start racing with 34 laps left when it was supposed to be 40?

I thought the kid might be interested but he decided to go in another room and play cards. It was fun while it lasted.

He must be related.

Is the newbie a 4 year old?

Yeah my dad was confused by all this stage racing stuff too. Not sure any of this stuff is helping create new fans as it's more just confusing.

He must be related.

No relation lol! I thought I was fair in my answers and he ended up understanding why stages were in place and why they had to have plates at Daytona. He seemed interested and I wasn't going to lead him one way or the other.

Is the newbie a 4 year old?

No, just a young person unfamiliar with Nascar as he had heard of Dale Jr, Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart but that was it. It was interesting for me as I haven't seen any part of a race with anyone for a very long time. I would probably ask similar questions if I was watching basketball as I am unfamiliar with it.

I thought he was getting into it as he kept thinking the cars were going to crash because they were so close together. I had a nice time with him before he bailed on me!

I just realized this race basically marks the 30 year anniversary of the reduced carburetor size/beginning of the restrictor plate age. It's amazing that after 3 decades of racing at Daytona and Talladega remains such an inexact science. Of all the changes this sport has seen the RP remains a constant. Ironically Bobby Allison won the '87 Firecracker 400 after his wreck at 'Dega in May.

Good race, felt the last half dragged a bit. I'll always wonder how these cars would run here without Restrictor Plates, the last time they did was before my time. Onto Kentucky, went there in 2014 nice track. However the walk in was murder, unforgiving.

Wow - congrats to the forum for over 1000 posts and 10,000 views for one race.

We were at a family party and only a half an eye on the race. By the time we got home
I just could not make it to the finish and hit the dvr record button. Eyes said No!

Plate race delivered another . Might need to add a # 17 5/3 car to the diecast collection.
He is working on quite the breakout season.

Is Nascar going to let him get away with jumping on top of the car? That has been a big no-no for many years.
Yeah, emotion sucks!

Seems like a rule that's run it's course. If the car ends up not passing spec beats of it, then do something. Otherwise, no harm, no foul.

I don't know or remember why they told them not to get on top of the car. But I do remember the first time they started placing objects on top of the car in VL so the drivers couldn't 'forget' and stand on the car. This is the first time I've seen a driver break that rule in many years.

Ha... I bet you used to say that when jr could drive

Think he's being sarcastic. Poking fun at the anti plate racing folks who seem to think there should be an asterisk next to wins at Daytona/Talladega.

Also Kyle Busch for calling Talladega a fake racetrack.

They put that silly PVC pipe thing together and placed it against the car before they climbed out. I think they were not fitting the roof template after bending under the pressure of the driver celebrations. Kinda dumb IMO. I like seeing the emotion from them.

I've seen a lot of emotions without jumping on the car. I don't equate the two.

If this jump doesn't bend anything, then nothing will and they should change the rule.

Larson almost pulled a double crash into the stands. looks like two or three feet higher..whew close one.

Stenhouse with left and right front damage.. probably the roof jump couldn't make any difference at that point..aero mangled.:p

I think Jeremy Mayfield jumped up and down on the roof for a ridiculous amount. of time after winning once.

They might been afraid that a few pills might have popped out of a cavity while jumping.

Lol, forgot about their stupid gate they tried using.

Written..
I don't know if is a written rule or not...... but...... you are right..... it was tried to be stopped years ago because of passing the after race templates.... others mentioned about setting stuff on top of the car ..... then... that stupid PVC pipe deal......
