Wicked late to the party again - really busy with kid's sports of late. I found Michigan to be a pretty good race. Better than it had been the past few years. Getting the Max perspective with Chase's in-car was educational to me about just how hard it is to pass. I felt like Chase passed some of the same cars multiple times and even if you ran someone down and passed them it was easy for them to get a run and pass you back if your momentum was killed at all.
My takeaways - Denny Hamlin - I know the hate for him is strong here but to me he is still the best out there. He wins on par with Larson and makes fewer mistakes. I was disappointed he pulled out the "I beat your favorite driver" line again as he said he was not going to do that but oh well. I don't particularly like him either but you just can't ague with the success and longevity. He will go down as the greatest to never win a title easily to me if he doesn't.
Bowman - Are these cars really so close that he could be as bad as he was at the beginning? I guess since Chase ran barley a tenth off the pole speed and qualified 17th the answer is yes bust just wow. And that hit he took is one of the worst I have seen. Glad he seems to be OK.
Chase - can he get any luck? It's amazing to me that when he's back in the pack and it's hard to pass the caution never comes out. Then Chase takes the lead and it's caution, caution, caution....and....caution. Their strategy was off and pit work atrocious again. Not even sure what happened on the last stop. On the radio they told him to go then said "STOP, STOP, STOP!!" He stopped and sat there a minute and they told him to go again. This is after they got one penalty 2 stops before and SHOULD have had another one for an uncontrolled tire on the next to last stop from what I saw on the camera. I am just not sure what is so hard about pitting these cars now with one lug nut.
Oh well - he drove good again and had some better restarts but those are just crap shoots to me anyway. Looking forward to a road course this weekend.
