Cup RACE thread ---- Sonoma

Statement was on being a two-bit reporter for short tracks.

Which again is a weird statement on a NASCAR forum. It would be like going to a movie forum and attacking community theater or an NFL forum and attacking high school football.

Comments like that are why the grassroots of our sport are dying.

If you don’t respect “podunk short tracks” then you aren’t a fan of stock car racing, you’re a NASCAR fan and there is a difference.

The last couple pages of this thread is an excellent example of why I don't post much. Really don't enjoy arguing that much. None of this matters at all. Except of course for SOI since he's on NASCAR's payroll.
Man, ain’t nobody arguing.
Leastwise, not me and Andy.

Plus, you got that career shed build going on; no time to post 😬

Ty Dillon and JHN made the final four :XXROFL:

This might be the dumbest thing NASCAR has concocted since the caution clock
They need to play Jim Valvano speeches all week and do some Dirty for Dirty Cinderella documentaries.

They need to sit the kid for a race or two.
The 6 car was right behind him coming in. He had to know the 6 was right there behind him he had a mirror full of the 6 car. I can't see how that could be an accidental thing.

Ty did it on track today at least. But damnnnn if Ty Dillon ends up winning this thing....

Meh - Until he can do something on an oval he will be seen as a ringer.
Yeah, we're going to disagree on that one. I don't consider Allmendinger, Ambrose, or JPM as ringers once they went full time, but neither lit up the ovals. Also, Allgaier and Sadler weren't Cup poachers once they went full-time Xfinity, and neither will Suarez if he goes that route.

Same old same old for the race and I am not trying to diminish what SVG is doing but it's gonne be the norm. Larry Mac had an interesting take that this is a perfect storm that these cars are similar to what he had been driving and his clutch technique is not something the other drivers can learn without testing (which is banned) or running in other series and when do they have time for that with no off weeks? This will be the norm for a while. As impressive as SVG is, it's making things boring. Everyone knows he will win before the race starts as long as he has no mechanical failures. I mean come on, he was pitting and STILL beating people that stayed out. I know all the playoff points he is racking up will make it interesting to see if he can get to round 2 and the Roval but I just don't see it happening and if he does and wins the Roval it will be a wasted spot in the round of 8.

Other than him, it was not a terrible race. Seemed that cars could pass and there was tire wear. Nothing spectacular but serviceable.

The 9 team is clicking right now for sure. 4 top 5's including a win in the last 5 races and probably 5 for 5 if not for the damage last week and starting in the back as he was turning really good lap times even with a damaged car. If not for all the cautions at the end and the dirt on the track that almost caused him to wreck I think Chase would have at least had second. Pretty sad though that I was still doubtful he could get SVG on new tires. LOL. I just hope the 9 team is not peaking too soon and primed for a slump later. Either way though, top 5's are not easy to come by in today's parity filled NASCAR so awesome job to them and glad that the issues at Chicago did not ruin their momentum.

Speaking of slump, it's odd what's going on with the 5 right now. I was watching him on Chase's in-car at the beginning when Chase was following him and it was clear the car is just not there. I can't believe he has not led a lap since wrecking while leading at the 600. I am sure they will turn it around and I actually predict he wins next week at Dover. I'd still like to see a good battle between he and Chase since they are both really good there.

I at least recall they were OK on ovals but I am not sure what the stats are there. SVG just seems lost on them more so than the others. He is whipping the field because of a technique he has on RC's but can't compete elsewhere so to me that's a ringer. I see your point though.

“But I’ve never seen him race so it doesn’t count” the recency bias of this fan base is always amusing. I’ve been guilty of it
There's also SVG being compared to drivers who only had one or two shots a year at road courses. It's impossible to say what Stewart, Gordon, Rudd, or Martin would have done with six a year. If this series only ran at Watkins Glen and Sonoma, Shane might not have come over at all.

Boring is on the TV production choices. Anyone who's been to the track knows there's always racing for position going on somewhere in the field. Find it and show it, like the coverage of other series does.
I once again had the alt broadcast. I think it has something to do with my father watching the race live before I do and it not recording it. I can't judge the coverage because of this.

Ya know, I've been wondering if Shane will make it through the round of 8.
He could, and why not? We have drivers who have never won on a super speedway who make it, but that is okay. Road course racing is a discipline in NASCAR. Like it or not, he has a niche. The regulars need to step up.

Why is that? It only takes one race win to hit the jackpot. It's worth millions to do so. But compared to other ringer types, SVG is head and shoulders above their skill level. I don't think anybody knew the degree of that when he was brought over. It was a gamble that has paid off handsomely.

Heard on The Teardown last night that Nascar is going to take a look at the six tire carrier going into the 54 pit and causing a scuffle.

No disrespect intended, but we are a long way removed from the era of farmers and milkmen who couldn’t care less about the twisties. SVG is doing it against the deepest, most talented, and most competitive field of road racers in Cup Series history, and in like machinery.
Sorry, but I would put Dan Gurneys contributions to motorsports above SVG's any day of the week in any era. SVG puts eyes on the screen and butts in the seats at road courses and that is a great good for business thing that drivers like Dan Gurney helped to build.

Personally, I’m enjoying SVG laying a beatdown on the field. He’s not the driver I follow, so him winning a race means my boy didn’t, but I find myself pulling for him every time.

In theory, from high above, that should be “good for the sport”. It’s too bad he didn’t win xfinity Saturday as well.

I am glad you are enjoying it and I was at first too but I just see problems with it now. How far does this go? What is NASCAR going to do if anything? I think they will have a problem with people tuning out since we all pretty much know the result before the event. I totally believe he was dogging it some yesterday also. Made me wonder if NASCAR had a conversation like they had with Bill Elliott's bunch back in the mid-80's where they basically said "you can win but don't stink up thew show." It was a good race yesterday from 2nd on back. LOL. In any event SVG is now tied for the most wins in Cup this season and I think we all agree he stands virtually no chance to go far in the playoffs so the argument is there that he is taking the spot from a more capable driver but I guess whoever finishes 17th in the playoff standings will have no excuse as if they wanted in they should win a race.
