Dale Jr has his best season in over a decade, loses sponsorship

Not very surprised by this, heard about this early this year, only bad thing is i need to get a new hat for his sponsor next year

I'm actually surprised that the National Guard stayed on for as long as they did. I figured they would back out when the Army left.

I'm sure there are plenty of companies that are frothing at the mouth at the prospect of putting their name on Junior's car. It's just a matter of how much they're willing to pay/how much Mr. H is asking for.

has Nationwide and Mountain Dew/AMP Energy right now for next year, but he needs a primary sponsor

No surprise. The Air Force probably won't last much longer with Almirola either.

It sucks to see that even HMS has to sponsor-cobble now.

To be more accurate the thread title should read: "National Guard decides to back out months ago, Dale Jr. has strong season coincidently".

Old news. Glad for Jr though this year.

Yeah, he'll definitely find one.

It is mildly disappointing to see the Guard leave because I thought that a military sponsor fit well with him and his image. Oh well. He's about the last guy I'm concerned about when it comes to finding sponsorship. LOL.

this was on 60 minutes, they were wasting there money. the average age of a male nascar fan is over 40, not the people that the military is trying to reach.

I get a feeling that HMS asks too much of sponsors for Earnhardt. $32 million for half a year seems like an obscene amount.

I remember last year they were hyping a big sponsorship deal and the only thing that came out of it was something like a five-race deal with Time Warner.

32 mil for half the season??? I didn't even think it was that much. I wonder if they were spending part of that on other stuff in nascar. I always thought a good sponsorship and well sponsored car for the season was around 25million not 32 for half the season.

Young men and women dont watch Nascar, the guard is throwing money in the fire. If they want to reach young recruitable people Nascar isnt the answer

It is usually $20-25 mil for a whole season. But, Dale Jr. is the most popular driver, so HMS gets the big bucks.

I gotta agree with this. Unfortunately for NASCAR, I can only see more teams losing big primary sponsors.. probably not too long before cars have a different primary sponsor each race.

The Armed Forces have been talking about pulling sponsorship of everything sports related for a few years now to save money. Like someone else already said, I'm surprised National Guard stayed on this long. I'd have thought them & the USAF over at RPM would've left after last year.

It is an insane amount. Since I learned that the NG got zero results, I have to support their decision. RH said he is holding out to protect his financial model. He may need to adjust his spending model instead.

Sucks to see them go. NASCAR has always heavily supported the military.

Hendrick still has Nationwide (12 races) and PepsiCo (five races) as sponsors for DaleJr for 2015.

Kurt Busch's much better half.

Patricia Driscoll @Patricia_AFF

EVERY troop I bring to the track each week wants to see that @NationalGuard car & take a pic w/it. Even if they know nothing about nascar

Not sure that's worth $25 mil.

They were spending $32 million for half a season? That's crazy. Sucks to see them go but I'm sure Hendrick will be able to find a new sponsor for Dale Jr. He's the most popular driver, after all.

that is some serious political correctness going on in that picture. The problem as I see it in particular with the dale jr sponsor is I think there was and is a disconnect with the reason for the sponsorship. The reason is a recruiting tool. I never remember hearing dale jr say join the guard in support of me and my sponsor and the country. HMS and the guard should have done more to connect and bring action to the sponsorship. It just says national guard I don't think many people think owe I should join the national guard now. However if they thought it would be supportive as a fan of dale jr and the deal was about getting people to join. maybe they would get more traction with the sponsorship. The same thing I feel is going on with Jeff gordon's driver to end hunger sponsorship. what in the world is AARP doing sponsoring jeff's car??? as a nascar fan that actually pays pretty close attention to whats going on. I still don't know who is hungry and how I would ever help them. how in the world could that sponsorship be money well spent for AARP. perhaps I am missing something. I always thought the nascar demographic wasn't elderly hungry people. The other intrique about this is national guard said they bailed, HMS says they have a deal through 2015.

I remember hearing that they have some sort of National Guard promotional/recruiting station at the track every week. If that's the case, I'm guessing that the thought process was that sponsoring the most popular driver in the sport would draw his massive fanbase out to said recruiting station and raise awareness in general. It makes sense in theory, but obviously it didn't translate into getting lots of people to sign up for the National Guard, so I can understand why they're backing out.

As for Gordon, he has done commercials/advertisements speaking out about the Drive to End Hunger. It's a program that is trying to raise awareness about senior hunger, and the average NASCAR fan tends to be an older adult, so it's the perfect demographic to try to reach out to. Heck, it even says right on the back of his uniform to text whatever phone number to make a donation to the cause. The sponsorship makes plenty of sense to me because Gordon is one of the most popular drivers and is pretty much a household name, and even though he's only 43, he's been at it so long that he's become one of the veterans/elder statesmen of the sport.

Do some research before yammering on & on & on. There were ads all over TV. Its all over Gordon's social media pages. Google "AARP DTEH". Pay closer attention.

ok maybe I wasn't being totally accurate. YES I do know what the purpose of his sponsor is but only because I am a junkie of the sport. I STILL say that if your average fan can't instantly know the reason for the sponsorship then its not being as effective as it can be. Traditionally sponsorships have been businesses everyone understands that. if it says bass pro on the car you know, go to bass pro. I like jimmy johnson and it DOES make me shop at lowes more often as a result. I also tend to do business with companies that are involved with nascar vs those that don't when I have an option to choose. in summary its easier for fans to understand use that product or frequent that business, rather than other things like hungry old people and joining the national guard. besides having national guard on the car might imply dale jr is just trying to be patriotic. keep in mind most fans aren't like us, not near as knowledgeable

I read somewhere that not a single person signed up in the NG as a result of Jr's sponsorship. Hard to believe.
