Daytona 500 RACE thread ! !

The cell is rapidly falling apart and there is no rain behind it. They've already been drying the track for 45 minutes so if they can just keep it as-is for the next 20 minutes til the threat of rain is gone it'd be maybe 90 minutes before we race again?

I think we'll know in the next 15 minutes what the plan is. If it rains, we're cooked. If not, it'll be a semi-reasonable start time.

Didn’t the 2015 summer race end pretty late too? IIRC, they didn’t even get that one started until close to midnight.

My dad/family and I were there! The race started around 11:30pm and ended around 3:00am. If they would've postponed it, I would've had to miss it.

I was already missing a day of class in a short 5 or 6-week semester by flying home Monday. I couldn't miss another day.

The Austin Dillon wreck! Completely forgot about that one being so late!

One year at Richmond, they ran like 20 laps under caution before calling the race and postponing it, then decided to restart the race and run the full 400 laps on Sunday. I always liked that call. Given that they've only run 10 laps, I think NASCAR should let these teams roll their backups out and hit the reset button on this race.
That sounds fair . Good idea

*Remembers he's in Nascar Pick 'Em 21*

That reset idea would be unacceptable.

Yeah ... let’s penalize the people who got through that.
I agree with what you are saying but look at the big picture... when those teams that made it through need to secure another sponsorship someday and companies remember how much sponsorship money was wasted due to little or no exposure during this race and say no thanks then that little penalty won't seem so big. The way big companies are getting tighter with their money and knowing how close they pay attention to how much time their cars get exposure makes me think this could start being a problem down the road. Heck when 2 cars are qualifying in drag racing and one car crosses the center line and hits a timing cone they throw out both cars runs with no rerun. The car that didn't hit the cone gets penalized for no reason also but life goes on. We have had races where we didn't qualify for one reason or another and we didn't feel like we gave that sponsor there moneys worth and we gave them another race for free. They have to look at the big picture and sometimes it works in your favor and sometimes it doesn't.

we are going back racing at 9:00pm!!

Yep! Coming from FOX.

Let's get dinner going and some caffeine and DO THIS!

Go "Flyin" Ryan Preece! For anyone who hasn't read the several posts I've done about Ryan and why I'm a fan...I watched him for YEARS race his modifed all over the Northeast! He is a real gentleman and one of the VERY VERY few modern driver's who's really earned his ride. He spent lots of seasons at the grassroots level, lots of races in crappy equipment in Xfinity and some Cup. He still races his modifed from time-to-time, and does special appearances racing in the Northeast. He has some funding but it's not "daddy's money" you alwayyyyyys hear about these days.

It's just crazy to me...I've seen him at Bristol in a Cup car and just a couple years before that in his modified every week at the famous Stafford Motor Speedway. Lots of awesome memories. As a fan, it's a journey very few can have anymore. Many of these young guys just tour across the country from the time they're 14 years old...late models, Super's, then Arca/KN. But Ryan has a couple true hometracks and a HUGE base of support. He's got me, and the whole northeast behind him!

Sponsors will get more air time in the 100s of times they'll replay that wreck between now and the checkered flag than if those cars finished the race.

Andrew described a race that was re-started from scratch after 10 caution laps during which no cars were damaged and no positions changed.

I’ve been away having dinner so I may have missed it but Has anyone brought up running the oval on rain tires yet? That was a RF’s.com favorite at the end of last year.
We have covered rain, start times, how unfair it is because of California fans, food, how Hollywood screws up the movies, rain tires, and other stuff that I just can't remember. Its been pretty normal here. ;)

I’m sorry I stepped away. Did we discuss how tracks should have tarps to cover the racing surface when it Rains. The tarps come out from under the walls. I think I may or may not have been in favor of this

Everyone passed on that one for the obvious reasons.

oof

Watching the clash again, it is obvious that Blaney was having a brake issue. Even after exiting the turns his brakes were still glowing hot and at the end of the final lap they were throwing sparks.
I think it was Elliot with a brake issue..

We discussed putting a roof on the track just like Football stadiums.
Everyone pretty much agreed with that.

Yep, that was covered earlier. :)

I’ve been saying for years that there should be sections of tarps behind the walls that can be rolled over and hooked to popup hooks on the apron. It obviously doesnt stop the rain or prevent the track from getting wet but it would make drying faster.

Just thinking of ways to be proactive instead of reactive.

Sell ad spaces on the tarps and it would be a hit.
