Deegan update

It seems
the game plan is to get in the laps in the back and move up
in the race results passing the dropouts.
After yesterday's longest green flag run, she was almost 20 seconds behind the car in front of her. That's not a deliberate plan to hang back, that's an inability to keep up.

This is a huge leap honestly. Jimmie Johnson couldn't handle the transition to road/street in an OW car. I'm not surprised but I'm still impressed she's trying.

Race # 1 … 17th of 21

Race # 2 … 18th of 21

Last car on the lead lap in both races. Qualifying and race results here:

I remember watching all the pre-season testing she did and her and the crew chief (?) going over video of every corner, etc. She seemed to have a handle on it and would improve as they went along. Gotta be frustrating for her now.

Detroit qualifying. My comments are not necessary.

Race …

18th - 4 laps down.

I watched her in practice and in the NXT race in person. The leaderboard tells the story IMO: she's over 5 seconds distant from Hauger and multiple laps down. She just couldn't get down the power fast enough in corners and I'm guessing she's way too slow on entry as well. JMHO: she'd have been better off doing ovals only while testing or running USF2000 just to get the hang of how these cars perform at any level. I feel a little bad for her. Not a ton, but a little bad because she just looks totally out of place.

It’s an incredibly difficult undertaking. Everyone she’s competing with has multiple years of single seater experience under their belts, whether it’s USF2000 and USF Pro 2000 here, FIA F2 and F3, various Formula Regional series, and so on. She’d never turned a competitive lap in one until three months ago. Coming straight out of NASCAR, it’s such a different sensation to get used to and such a big learning curve to figure out how to maximize the braking capabilities, downforce, etc.

Almost like she should of went somewhere that was more similar to what she was used to...like late models.

Monster, I would guess, has no interest in going dirt racing. It wants to be represented in major series and that means Hallie Deegan at the Indy 500 now or bust with bust becoming very, very likely.

I remember Jimmie Johnson explaining the difficulties driving an open wheel car compared to NASCAR. Made me appreciate his attempt to adapt much more.

She has a 7th and a 15th to her credit from the Truck races at Gateway, so maybe there is some hope yet as the NXT series begins to hit some ovals. Four of the final nine events are on ovals.
