Denny Hamlin has compression fracture of L1 vertebrae

I'm not following you. Drugs in his system is drugs in his system. Regardless if legal or not. And a exception would open the door for others caught 'dirty"

They know why the tests come back positive. They know he was on prescription medication. Just because the tests come back dirty, doesn't mean he's feeling the effects of the drugs and will be affected by them in the car. Most sports do allow exceptions for something like this, and I'd imagine NASCAR is no different.

can't compare the two, some sports shoot em up with cortisone at halftime, or pile all the attendants around the player and shoot him up on the sideline. They aren't driving a 3200lb ish car around others. despite all that do, and not wanting to get into the prescription drug addicts who take pain killers thing. It says right on the side of the bottle to not operate machinery while taking certain pain killers..the strong ones. Synthetic morphine, like hydo cordone and oxycotton. I got busted by the DOT physical one time for codeine cough syrup. I had to give them the prescription number, and the pharmacy where it was filled, or I would have been fired probably from the company I was driving for. I took a tablespoon the night before I had a random drug test. Nascar is even more stringent than the DOT. They pull hair samples and test them, so fast acting drugs like cocaine, meth and other opiates that leave the system pretty quickly can be detected. There will be no drug use in Nascar..other sports a bit different. They want their stars to play as soon as possible or keep playing in the big game. You ever wonder how come the cops catch em dirty for drugs, but the team hardly ever does? I don't follow stick and ball that much..but it isn't hard to spot a player that is all steroid-ed up.

nascars test levels are based on usage, not the present affects of the drug. nascar could make an exception because they know why he used them.

Again... What??? Are you saying Denny could race while taking Vicodin as long as NASCAR is OK with it?

No. I believe what he's saying is, say Denny used Vicodin 3 days ago. If you take a drug test today, that's still going to test dirty, but we both know you aren't still feeling the effects of Vicodin 3 days later. Therefor, NASCAR would give him an exception since they know why he came back dirty, but they also know the meds aren't phasing him mentally or physically.

it will kinda pan out on it's own, as soon as possible he will get off the pain meds when he can. If he can't he won't be driving. he has almost two weeks to heal, a good reason to stay out of the press for a while..no practice, no testing. all is good. If he needed an operation, he would probably already be done with all that by now. hanging at home, not talking on the telephone, popping pills and sleeping.

Well said. Now what are your thoughts on taking out the rear windows to reduce aero push? I can't get these fools around here to even consider the idea. ;)

Hey, I'm with ya! But why quit there... I say take out the windshields too, and the drivers can't even wear goggles! All teary eyed at 200 MPH, with dirt, rubber bits, and the odd chunk of sheet metal smackin' 'em in the head... now THAT would make for some exciting and fairly unpredictable racing! Don't cha think? Ya think if a hot dog wrapper got stuck on some drivers face, pullin' up tight and drafting might pull it off? Just thinkin'...

If that works out, next season NASCAR could require that all cars have a bloodhound strapped in the car, with his head hangin' out the passenger window. Just think, add all that slobber to the junk flyin' into the faces of the guys behind...

lol I'm in. Where can I get tickets?

I was just passin along what Denny was sayin. He was all hyped up on painkillers and hadn't thought it through maybe . But I can see what he was saying , he would have to be off the painkillers before he could get race clearance and he isn't planning on getting off them any time soon. I was thinking of back in the day when some drivers had to be lifted into their cars ..shot full of novocaine.

yeah that deal with Bobby Labonte when he broke his hand or wrist, they were talking about "get the needle". that would probably have a hard time getting thru the Nascar bunch today.:) Heck I think he said he finished 5th.

No surgery but will need at least six weeks to heal, per JGR.
Wait a second..... I thought there was an all new improved thread dedicated to Hamlin's recovery time, totally unrelated to the back injury itself? Man, get your crap together. :p

Seriously though, this really sucks for JGR, Denny, & their sponsors. I'm not a Denny fan in any way, shape or form. I think the guy is a total head case and already had things to deal with outside of this. It has to suck big time for him to sit out at all. When Brian Vickers had to do that a short time ago for his health related issues and you could tell from his tweets and the like how bad he wanted/needed to be back in a car. I'm sure that Denny will be going through much of the same. Hopefully he has a full and speedy recovery and can get back to racing when he's completely healthy. There I go again. I said recovery. I'm in the wrong thread! :(

lol How dare you say recover in this thread. That's so damn off topic! ;)

I really enjoyed Darbys comments on the whole thing.

Was just reading this.
HUMBLE, Texas (AP) - Roger Penske said Wednesday that Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin have exchanged text messages since their final-lap crash at Fontana last weekend that left Hamlin hospitalized with a fractured vertebra.

Penske said he's also sent text messages to Hamlin, who is expected to miss at least six weeks. Penske and Logano, one of his drivers, were playing in the pro-am leading up to the PGA Tour's Houston Open. Logano twice turned down interview requests.

Hamlin acknowledged he exchanged text messages with Logano.

"It didn't go well," Hamlin told The Associated Press. "The conversation was both short and unproductive."
from here.

But, but, but...Rick has Junior!
Good point. Problem solved.:XXROFL:

Why would the texts go well..? Joey probably said something like "Hope you get well soon", and Hamlin said "Thanks", or something. Just because of all this drama doesn't mean they are friends again lol. Wonder if it turned into one of them saying "well you know if you didn't... or maybe next time you should..." I have a feeling it was pretty much a formality. I doubt either of them wants to talk to the other right now.

OK, I looked it up instead of going by an old memory. A bone fracture seems to be just part of the description. Hairline, simple, compound, displaced etc, are used to describe the severity. I don't remember anything more being said about Denny's injure than it was a fracture, so I can't say it was a hairline fracture or a clean break. My bad.

Understand much?

Enough. Denny has a history of back problems. He was driving hurt at Fontana and climbing back in the car should not be an option until things get calmed down and decisions based on healing or surgery are made over a resting period of time.

Well...duh! All that depends on how severe and what type the fracture is.

Geez whiz, this is real simple stuff here.

Now this is interesting:

Joe Gibbs Racing said Thursday morning that they were not prepared to announce a replacement driver for Denny Hamlin yet. The Associated Press' Jenny Fryer tweeted, "the word on the street is [Mark Martin] is in play for #11 in a straight swap with [Michael Waltrip Racing] for [Brian Vickers], except Talladega."(3-28-2013)

@joeylogano

Wish @dennyhamlin a speedy recovery. Hope he gets back to the track soon. And thanks to all of my fans for their support.

The front end of the #22 was bouncing up and down as a result of contact with the #11, I'd say.
