Denny Hamlin vs. Kyle Petty

Hamlin has no plans to cut back racing sched: There are days when Denny Hamlin's back hurts so much he can hardly move. When he wakes up in the morning, it sometimes takes four hours before he can stand up straight and feel stable. His persistent back pain, caused by bulging discs, only got worse when he fractured a vertebra in the March race at Southern California's Auto Club Speedway. He needs surgery to fix the bulging discs, and some observers have called for Hamlin to give up on his longshot Chase hopes and have the procedure done now to make sure he has enough time to heal before 2014. But Hamlin told USA TODAY Sports on Saturday he plans to "tough it out" for the rest of the year. "It's tough because there are no backups in our sport," he said while relaxing in his motorhome before qualifying at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. "I'm the face of our team the (Joe) Gibbs (Racing) team, FedEx, everyone so you can't just insert another player for the rest of the year and have no one know the difference. You know, I've got to do whatever I've got to do to just get through the season, honestly. And then I can figure out what I can do to (feel) better next year. But right now, we're just in a mode of trying to finish races."(USA Today)(7-28-2013)

This can be read 2 different ways. One way, Denny IS saying he's the face of JGR. So Kyle does have a point. But maybe Denny forgot he said it.

I didn't think he said anything too outrageous.. He calls how he sees it, like he did with Danica a few week back.

"I think Denny's a good race car driver -- a really solid race car driver"

Denny is just frustrated, he needs to have thicker skin if he wants to be a champ one day

Kyle and Tony were sitting next to eachother once. I don't remember if it was one of the pre race shows or whatever. Suddenly Kyle was doing nothing but praising Danica.......

Again, when he discussed danica he gave her credit as a driver but basically said she lacked the skills to be a NASCAR racer.. Maybe we should have a bunch of clones that do nothing but kiss all the drivers butz.. IMO, he's harmless

They can talk all the smack you want about other people in Nascar. Just don't change your tune when they are around.

I think Hamlin's worried that, if he sits out, he'll lose his ride to someone else. And he should be, even though I think he needs to take care of himself now. Matt Kenseth is showing how good Joe Gibbs Racing equipment really is and I'm sure Jamie McMurray or Ryan Newman would love to get in that #11 car and show what they can do.

I think FedEx has a lot to say in the decision. That, plus Hamlin's stubborn attitude is probably enough to keep him in the car.

I think Hamlin is jacked up on prescription pain pills. He is making driving errors... all by myself mistakes on a regular basis. Hooked a tire on the infield a few weeks back, same race he ran into the back of Truex. The last couple of weeks he spins out all by himself..he isn't up on the wheel. He qualified well when all he had to do was concentrate for one lap, but in a race that requires constant concentration, he ain't cutting it. He doped up I tell ya.o_O

FedEx was a Joe Gibbs Racing sponsor before Denny Hamlin came around. It's sort of what Kyle Petty was suggesting. Hamlin's statements seem to suggest that he thinks that he's the face of JGR and the organization can't go on without him. I doubt that's how he really feels - but that's how it comes out when you read the transcripts.

Newsflash: No athlete is in-disposable. If he were to hurt himself again this year, he can be replaced. And it wouldn't be as hard a decision as people think it would be when you have Mark Martin, Jamie McMurray and Ryan Newman all looking for rides for next season. I'm sure MWR would have no problem letting Vickers finish the season in the no. 55 so Mark can go to the no. 11 since it's already known Vickers is taking over that ride next year.

Kyle threw shade on his own dad's team a few weeks saying RPM wasn't good enough to make the chase... Doesn't mean he doesn't like his dad, just giving an opinion. If NASCAR had more personalities who didn't lick boots the ratings and attendance might not be as bad IMO

Kyle's not wrong.

I have to chuckle every time Denny opens his mouth. All of this whining about someone not knowing anything, considering his Brad Keselowski prognostication a few years ago (among many other statements), makes for such delicious irony.

Never been a Denny fan...he drives dirty, whines way too much, and is completely full of himself. If I could have wished adversity onto one driver for the season, it would have definitely been him. I don't like that he got hurt, but I find it hilarious watching him be noncompetitive while he still thinks he's amazing and indispensable.

Kyle is one of the better analyst imo because he is not afaid to speak his mind and be brutal. I dont always agree with him but I do in this case. Beats the heck out of having to listen to DW suck up to everybody.

Funny how DW was so hard on NASCAR publicly after Dale Earnhardt was killed and proceeded to spend the next 12 years with his lips attached to NASCAR's a**hole.

I don't think it's any secret I pull for all the Toyota guys, but Denny is probably my least favorite driver in the Toyota camp. The guy's got an ego that won't quit, and I'm afraid that ego is going to get him seriously hurt. Just get out of the car already dude.

Sure, but they've invested in Hamlin now.

If Hamlin gets hurt again and someone like McMurray gets in that car and clicks off wins (while Denny, right now, is a backmarker), you think they'll keep investing in Denny? Danica is the only backmarker driver who will ever be worth the investment. And if she ever looses her good looks, she won't be a valuable investment for long.

It already got him hurt. All he had to do was show Logano a little respect and he wouldn't have raced him so hard at Texas.

Denny is always panseying it up about something, it just another Dennys set of hurt feelings, hell he should do a video to the old "feelings" dirge from the 70s.

Hamlin can be a tweet taking moron himself. He did his best to treat Logano like a boy, and then tallkd about how Lagano couldn't keep up like some juvenile bully.
Long story short he helped to dig his own hole.

How long has Hamlin composed himself well enough to set aside looking like a complicated delicate issued loaded mental wreck.

Giving opinions is Kyles job, and I like the distance he keeps. Most race commentators would be better off keeping a distance, it would stop some of the ass kissing.

If McMurray and Newman is what is available, Hamlin's job is safe.

Gibbs would likely put Vickers in the #11 for the reminder of this year, if necessary.

In My Opinion if Kyle Petty's last name wasn't Petty he would have been laying around in a commune stoned for the last 40 years. Unlike some of the others with a hand up like the Dillon boys he has never been a competitive race car driver. His MO is being an a**hole to get the press's attention and publicity but saying I'm sorry to keep from getting an ass whipping.

Not quite sure that you are saying Kyle 'has never been a competative race car driver' . I recall him as being ' the man ' at a couple of tracks . Losing the allstar race in one of the most famous finishes ever ,and being pretty good at road racing when it wasn't expected . He is 63rd on the all time win list , right around AJ Foyt , HOF member Cotton Owens and current driver Clint Bowyer . Different times , I know , but he's no Timmy Hill. He also raced in some pretty crappy rides .;)

The beauty of an opinionated and outspoken person is the varying opinions they elicit. If Kyle Petty marched the beaten path, he would be wasting his time as much as DW does.

I respect your right to your opinion but your opinion on Kyle Petty is just stupid. Makes you sound like a bitter old misinformed intolerant redneck.

:owquitit: I didn't say that ...Matt did. Personally Johali , you are my favorite poster .;)

Actually, that's probably not far off the mark.

I'm not a big KP fan either so I'm sure that influences my thoughts on anything that he spews. IMO he's at the early stages of turning into Jimmy Spencer and will eventually look just as foolish. Soon we'll probably be seeing his YouTube videos of fake interviews as well. He looks destined for the same path.

Yeah , I know what you mean . I'm not sure why Kyle or the networks want to portray him as a cartoon type character the way they did with Jimmy . Maybe that's want the young tv audience want to see , I don't know . Why else would they want Rutledge Wood and DW . I do know that Kyle is the exact opposite of his on air character . He is a well respected collector of rare books and a really smart guy .His charity work as been the model for all of the other drivers to follow . Hope he can still rehab his image .
