Dillon will use the #3 in Nationwide Series in 2012

What bothers me about it is the hypocrisy. A couple years ago, Childress said he wanted NASCAR to retire the number 3 and didn't want it to be used again.

I do remembr that, but seriously we all know this is about the almighty $$.

Correct me if I'm wrong but hasn't Dillon been running this stylized '3' for the past couple seasons in the Truck series? Why is there this outcry now by all of these non-Earnhardt fans? I read post after post at the beginning of this thread about how all of the old Earnhardt fans are just going to hate this but I haven't seen this yet. It seems most are upset with RCR for changing his mind about running the '3' for monetary reasons. HELLO, this is NASCAR! It's all about the money. It takes money to field these teams.

As a long time Earnhardt fan, I can't wait to see this number ran on Saturday's. I can't wait to see it eventually back on the track on Sunday's too. It's been gone far to long.

I'm not on one side or the other here as I really don't care, other than the enevitable and relentless media hype one will be forced to endure to simpy watch a race.

However, what Andy didn't to add to his post was that Childress said the #3 would never be used again on a black car, sponsored by GM Goodwrench.

RC made that statement long before Austin started driving. By the time Austin started driving, enough time had passed to ease RC's feelings a little. I mean, how does a grandparent say "no"? :D

I've loved seeing the 3 in the Trucks, I'll love seeing it in the Nationwide, and once its in the Cup guess what? I'll love it then too. Now me I only find using the 3 okay in two ways.

Way one being if you're an Earnhardt then I can see that as being okay.

If you drive for RCR then alright I say go ahead and go for it.

Other then that I would be like no just go away.

One Can Only Imagine

All the cheers and hatred when Autin Dillion drives the #3 in a cup race

One Can Only Imagine

To Whomever put the link up on my original thread. That link is about NNWS. The only mention of dillion and cup is the 98 car. i am talking about the #3 in CUP so you can put mine back

But if you read through that whole thread, the topic encompasses all three series, including Cup. I don't think there needs to be a separate thread (and agree with the mod that moved it)

Again. I am talking about dillion and the #3 in CUP. SR. did not drive a truck with the #3 on it. He did not drive a #3 in the Busch series. I'm the one that said remove my post. Moving on

#3

Nit picking. Was it a special occasion or was it a full time ride in the busch series? JR. drove the #3 in the busch series

He ran a lot of races in the #3 both when they ran V-6s and moved to V-8s. He ran 136 races with 21 wins.

82' thru 86' were pontiacs. 87 moved to chevrolets. Were all those cars sporting the imfamous #3

I got my stats from the same site. Now link me up to those cars running the well known #3. I'll be back later to see how you did

If memory serves, Dale started running the lower series from its inception in the late 80s(? -- going on memory alone here). And yes, the cars were black when Big E ran them. That was his own team that he and Teresa started. He never ran the full season until he quit and put Steve Park in the AC Delco #3. Then it was Dale Jr's ride.

From 89 until 94, her ran about 80 races (give or take) in the #3 GM Goodwrench car in the Busch series. In one of those he ran the #15, in another he ran the #87.

It's all on the racin-reference site you are getting your data from, just a click away. Just one, example, 1989:

http://racing-reference.info/drivdet/earnhda01/1989/B

And I still wonder why this is a separate thread, when there's already the whole #3 discussion is already combined in one thread...http://www.racing-forums.com/vb/showthread.php?t=38893

I'm a big Dale Sr. fan, always was, always will be.

I don't care much for Austin Dillion but if he takes the number 3 it does make sense since he is the grandson of Childress.

That being said, as great as Dale Sr. was and for how he went out I still think the right thing to do would be to retire his number for good.

Plus NASCAR has been dying to be like the big 4 sports with all this playoff nonsense and wild card garbage then they should be like the big 4 sports and retire numbers that are worthy of it as well.

Just to clarify the Busch/Nationwide/Sportsman series a little.

NASCAR started the Late Model Sportsman series in 1968 it took the place of the old Modified Sportsman class. They ran short tracks North Wilkesborough, Martinsville, Bowman Gray etc.

In 1982 Anheuser Busch became the series sponsor and it was called the Budweiser Latemodel Series. This is when the Sportsman cars first started running on the larger speedways, matter of fact Dale Earnhardt Won the First Bud Latemodel Series race it was ran at Daytona Feb 1982 and called the Goody's 300.

In 1984 the series was renamed the NASCAR Busch Series.

In 2008 it became our current Nationwide series.

And I don't blame Dale Jr. one bit for NOT wanting to drive that number. He carries a load just wearing the name.

True. The fact that it's the #3 doesn't mean anything unless an Earnhardt is behind the wheel.
It was cool to see Jr. win in the Wrangler #3 last year...:beerbang:

So what is everyone's thoughts? I think there will be some angry Earnhardt fans.
maybe, but i doubt a lot. dale died in 2001. a lot happens in eleven years. besides, nascar has pretty much driven the hard core nascar fans away. i'm sure they're much more interested in two young up and comers than what some old time earnhardt fans have to say.

It's just a number...doesn't bother me.....But i'm not a E fan

Agreed. Before Earnhardt made the 3 famous, Richard had that number. I was a earnhardt fan and it would of bothered me if they continued to use the 3 right after Dales death. But time marches on, time for someone else to get the Black 3 to victory lane.

Did anyone know that one of Dales first NASCAR starts came when he was subbing for Willy T. Ribbs at Charlotte in 1978?

Charlotte Motor Speedway president Humpy Wheeler entered Ribbs to drive a Winston Cup car owned by Will Cronkite in the 1978 World 600 at the Charlotte track. After Ribbs skipped two practice sessions and was arrested for evading police when he drove the wrong way down a one way street, Cronkite replaced him with Dale Earnhardt.[1]

Remember reading something about that now that you brought it up. dont remember to much about SR. replacing him though. Good stuff thanks

Anyone who is an Earnhardt fan should know that information about Dale Sr subbing for Ribbs & about the pink car, it's basic Earnhardt family knowledge. As far as the number 3 in the Nationwide series, I was under the impression that Earnhardt Inc had the rights to the Nationwide #3 since they used it under their ownership name dating all the way back to about 1989. Austin Dillon's father never drove a Nationwide car with the number 3 on it, he drove a #21 RCR Nationwide car as teammate to Harvick back in the early 2000's. The last time the #3 car ran fulltime in Nationwide was with Ron Hornaday Jr behind the wheel during the 2000 season driving for Dale Earnhardt. I had always wondered why in 2001 DEI did not field a Nationwide car, then in 2002 Jr drove the first of his 3 races for RCR in the number 3 & I was like why is this a joint effort between DEI & RCR when DEI was more than able to run that car out of their shop & the number was I thought assigned to them. Did RCR have the rights to the number and was just letting Dale Sr borrow it all those years from the late 80's to 2000 or did Teresa hand the rights over after Dale's death, seems to me Chance 2 should have used the number during their reign in the 2000's? The number has the most significance in the Cup series, that's what alot of folks don't get. Dale Sr was only a part time driver in Nationwide & when he quit driving in the Nationwide series he handed the wheel over to Jeff Green then & Steve Park before Jr drove to his back to back titles, the number is not the same in Nationwide. It's when someone, probably Austin, takes over the number in the Cup series thats when it'll be a big deal IMO. RC can put whatever he wants on the Nationwide car & to me it's fine...
