  • Allmendinger offered ride with JTG Daugherty: AJ Allmendinger has an offer to drive the #47 JTG Daugherty NASCAR Sprint Cup car in 2014. Team owner Tad Geschickter confirmed to FOXSports.com a full-time deal had been offered to Allmendinger. The driver confirmed JTGD's proposal late Wednesday night. Allmendinger, 31, has competed in NASCAR, IndyCar and Grand-Am this season. With his experience in a variety of different series and manufacturers, JTGD brought Allmendinger in for the Michigan June race to provide a second opinion on what areas the needed improvement with the car mechanical, aerodynamic or engine. At that time, the team's current driver Bobby Labonte was 27th in the standings. Although Geschickter has offered Labonte a position within the company, the 49-year-old former Cup champion told FOXSports.com on Aug. 24 that he had not made a decision regarding his 2014 plans.(Fox Sports)(8-29-2013)

I would imagine right about now Newman and AJ are competing for the #78. My money is on AJ getting that ride.

Newman will get it, doesn't the 78 get their engines from Hendrick? I think they do, so IMO he will stay under the umbrella.

A little bird told me FRR has had Toyota out to Colorado negotiating a switch to their program. It doesn't make sense to me, but that's what the birdy says.

I don't think any decisions will be made by drivers getting offers until FRR and JTGD figure out their manufacturers and technical alliances.

Very interesting...and didn't FRR entertain the idea of switching to Dodge last year? Maybe they're not happy with the support they're getting from Chevrolet? Things seem to be going great for them now, so I'm not sure if switching would be all that great but there's probably a lot going on behind the scenes that we're not privy to.

On the thread topic, I think AJ can do better than the 47, but it's a dangerous game to turn down a full time ride if he can't land another one. Sure wouldn't want to get caught with nothing.

IDK, I would think a driver without a ride would jump at a deal with FRR. It's self sponsored and dedicated to winning. Any move to another manufacturer would have to be a move up for them. With AJ on board, they could benefit from his relationship with Roger in any switch to Ford. Would they get some inroads to HMS with Newman? Seeing how SHR dumped him, I doubt it.

It could be that FRR is just maneuvering for a better deal with Chevy / RCR.

I just can't imagine anyone with a name jumping to a team that has limped along for years, and in a Triad powered car to boot.

I do remember some rumors a couple of years ago about a switch to Dodge. Or was that when Penske bolted and Dodge was courting anyone who would listen?

If I were spending the money at FRR, it would be AJ hands down. Cheaper, much more personable, and much more capable of getting them some road wins each year. Newman isn't very connected to his fans, if there are any.

With AJ, FRR would be a true contender for at least 2 road wins per year. That potential alone has carried RPM for a couple of years now.

A better ride would be a X Finch/Scott Chevy 51. higher on the food chain anyway.

Better than what? The 47? Maybe. The 51 was higher on the food chain for one reason, James Finch. He's gone. Why would Rick feed him HMS's experimental equipment without that huge trust factor?

I think the Dodge rumors were after Penske split.

Completely agree with you on AJ, I think he's a better option for FRR but it remains to be seen if they're interested in him. I still believe AJ will win in Cup but Newman's resume is far more impressive. I'm not interested in nostalgia though, I think AJ would be better for them going forward.

Speaking of RPM, are they bringing back Ambrose and Almirola?

Maybe? a triad powered Toyota? Or a Hendrick powered Chevy?...give me a break. While everybody is blowing smoke, and don't know squat, I wish I was a little birdie and knew what ol' man Penske has said to A.J. about potential Penske rides next year.

IDK. I think they both have great potential...IF RPM could actually keep up during the year. They start the year real fast, then other teams catch up and they never seem to get better.

You seem confused, and wishing for a birdie will get you nowhere. Common sense will tell you that Roger is still committed to his promise of a future cup ride for Hornish. Common sense will tell you that Penske isn't jumping to 4 cars anytime soon either. Common sense will tell you that AJ is no sponsor magnet just yet, so he'll forgo salary for a self sponsored ride.

etc, etc....

WHY do you assume it will be HMS powered?
Did I miss the HMS announcement that their technical agreement with Finch stays in effect even though the team has been sold???????

maybe new 78 driver will depend on brand / big team support ??

chevy---- rcr.......newman ?
toyota--- jgr or mwr......montoya ? .....hispanic draw---fr an toyota brand
ford----penske.....dinger ?

Hey, you agreed with me. Was that a mistake? ;)

AJ is better then the 47 at its current state but maybe the 47 ups it's program.. who knows.. Their isn't many rides out there. He wasn't getting the 78 and while the 51 may be a better ride with Harry Scott, I wonder if Scott would want AJ just starting out.

I would think anything Penske would offer AJ would be in NNS. Penske has always said he is committed to getting Sam back to Cup. If Sam wins the NNS championship it would be hard for Rodgers not to offer any open cup ride to him first.

Don't know where you heard that swerving Sammy was moving back to cup?

“I said to him, ‘If there is an opportunity in Cup that you want (then go), but I can tell you one thing, we’re going to give you the best car, the best crew chief we can to run in the series this year. … The goal is for you to win the championship. Not second or third,’” Penske said.

A crappy Cup ride probably pays more.

I know this is rhetorical but to back it up, Bobby Labonte with avg. finish of 28th this year in 22 races, has earned almost 2.5 mil.

Sam Hornish on the other hand in the Nationwide series hasn't even earned a Million yet.

Kinda of a no brainer lol.

The only argument to be made is that maybe if AJ does Nationwide full time next year, he could get a better cup ride the following year.. That is possible but he also could do badly and never get a full time ride in cup again. I wouldn't want to risk it.

Yep, he could drive the junky Triad Toyota to mid pack greatness and make more money than doing great in N'wide with good equipment. That isn't rhetorical, that's a fact. Another fact is that it is complicated like you say. Could get booted out of a mid pack piece and miss an opportunity for a good ride. I personally don't think A.J. is good enough to be on a top cup team. Maybe in the future, but in the past in cup, he hasn't done that great.

Didn't I say something along the lines of of this yersterday?

I think Bobby is done.

You probably didn't read my post right, that is okay. I never said he WAS going back, just that Penske was committed to try and get him back to Cup.

We don't know where you heard it either.

NOBODY here said he was. But Roger has said a few times that one of his goals is to give Sam a real chance in a cup ride....at Penske. If that doesn't materialize, Sam is free to grab any cup ride he's offered.

All that is a Looooooong way from anyone saying 'Sam is moving back to cup'.

You might be right about FRR. I don't see a guy like Newman wanting to drive a Toyota, but I guess if that's one of the very few offers you have it's one you have to accept.

And it looks like I was wrong about JTGD. I thought AJ would've waited to see things unfold but maybe he thinks he can really help turn that program around.

A three year deal? Wow, AJ either has confidence in the team or he's all about the quick cash.. Three years takes him right out of his prime.

It would make sense, as AJ seems to get all of Kurt Busch's old rides, but I'd rather have Newman if I had to pick between the two. I've always thought AJ was a little overrated.

I expected him to sign, just not a 3 year contract. WOW. I wonder what JTGD told him to make him commit for that long. I surely thought he'd take a 1 year deal like Kurt did in the 78. Well if that is where he wants to call home then good for him.

He knows he is on going to be there in three years. He got a ride to show what he can do.
