I mean hey... why not?

Seriously though... if there's any elite drivers that we should be asking this about it's probably this guy....

Or was it Kurt? No wait.. he's already got a win.. yeah.......Tony :D

Mess with his double whoppers, onion rings, peanut butter --jelly bananer-mayonnaised sandwich, cheetos & dip, and KoKoehler, or pull his finger and you will regret it buddy. If you value your life, and like life as you know it DONT DO IT.

Especially if you are a good target (as in real skinny, with dainty arms and look unimposing).

Maybe his ankle/foot injury is affecting his ability to race?

Or maybe we could add a "Factless Opinionated Speculation" section :D

Clearly all the Top Tier drivers been abducted by aliens that escaped from Area 51 where they were kept after they crashed at Roswell. Anyways, the aliens replaced all the top tier drivers without a win with clones that are close, but not exactly a 100% copy of the original. *nods*

My bold prediction was that one SHR CC would be fired. Chad should be nervous.

I'm not sure what has happened to Tony --- maybe too many hats. He's more concentrated on getting everything to mesh than
his own team. Haas threw him a curve when he added Kurt and team. Getting all that to work together in such a short amount
of time has got to work against him.

Thats been my main train of thought in all this. He can clearly still drive and never really breaks out until the summer months anyway... But he has spent the greater half of a year looking at NASCAR from a different point of view. I assume that he probably has a lot more on his mind now having watched so many races from the pit box.

I pesonally think that when he is in his race car that all of his stress and problems in life is put on hold. I think his lack of performance is more about the set up on his car. Kurt is not setting the world on fire right now either. The only one on that team that has been consistently fast, is Harvick. I think Tony and Kurt will be just fine when they get their cars dialed in, and if they can give Danica a decent car once in a while then she may have a a few more top 10 finishes, also.

Smolder has been burnt up from both sides and the middle all at once. He may just be easing his way back in with all the stuff going through his mind like TRL mentioned in her post.

just wait till next month when tony starts caring! for some odd reason he hardly ever wins from feb-may..6 out of his 48 wins have been in between those months...

his leg is still a problem, co-owns a 4 car team, gene haas going to own an F1 team, new CC..a lot on his plate this year that's for sure...

Th 14 team wasn't exactly setting the world on fire before Tony was injured last year. It seemed like they were falling behind the competition back then, so it doesn't really surprise me they aren't doing so well now.

I agree that he does better after the May 6th timeline you referenced. Tony is a streak driver with a bigger on/off switch than any other driver I have ever seen.

I think the bottom line is that his leg is giving him more hell than he accounted for. Another off season should do the trick.

I think it's an easy out to say it's the leg. He notoriously a slow starter almost each and every season. He's only one win from a Chase birth. That could easily be @ the 600.

to me tony has never showed he cared, i feel he loves racing no matter the outcome, of course he wants to win, just seems he doesn't care about the other things. i did see every week while working at JGR that joe and son, all the drivers, crew chiefs, engine builders, so on would have their meeting monday nornings, and they would all be bunched around except tony, he would be 8 to 10 feet away, hands in his pockets looking around everywhere but the meeting. and you could forget trying to get him to sign something. i even asked jimmy maykar about tony's attitude, and his reply was, that's a tough one.

Everybody know's that he hated being with toycar and showed it.

The leg, fielding 4 cars and only his second year with Chad is alot to handle all at once.

I still like Tony for the most part, even though he was so repulsed by driving a Toyota that he had to go form his own team.

As for "what's wrong", I think it's a combination of things: the leg, age (he'll be 43 on Tuesday), not being in very good shape, and running multiple teams. I think Tony still has some wins in him, but I think his championship days are over.

I'll hold my opinion of him for a couple more month's to see if he is improving enough to be a factor again. I think his leg is his biggest problem.

He just won a championship in 2011 by winning 5 chase races including the final race of the season to claim the title. His "shape" was just the same as it was back then. He even said something along the lines of "Now everyone knows you dont have to run marathons and be in the gym all the time (eluding to Carl's workout schedule) to win one of these things".

I'm sure it's got more to do with him not being a 1st half of the season driver, his leg, and not having a consistent crew chief.

2012 was quite the opposite, however. He got off to a great start, then pretty much disappeared in the Chase. Except for the win at Dover, he wasn't exactly lighting it up in 2013 either before the injury. Guess we'll never know if he would have went on another '11 like run last year had he not gotten hurt.
