3 times the winner of the Dover Chase race has gone on to win the championship: Jimmie Johnson ('09,'10) & keselowski ('12)

3 times drivers have won the first 2 races in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup: Greg Biffle ('08), Tony Stewart ('11), Matt Kenseth ('13).

The top five in points (Kenseth, Johnson, Kyle Busch, Edwards, Biffle) have the top five career driver ratings at Dover.

1. Jimmie Johnson - 119.6
2. Matt Kenseth - 107.3
3. Kyle Busch - 105.6
4. Carl Edwards - 102.9
5. Greg Biffle - 101.4

I feel like The other contenders need a win and Kenseth a slight issue to really get back in this. Kenseth wins here, it's his title.

The Monster before it became the Monster Mile.

The track opened in 1969 as America’s first multi-purpose sports complex and remains that still today. It’s busy schedule from opening day in 1969 included thoroughbred and standard bred horse racing on the interior 5/8 mile oval and world-class auto racing on the outside one-mile track. The concrete auto racing track boasted a new design called “variable degree” which helped drivers transition from flat straights to high-banked turns. This new design allowed for drivers to reach unprecedented speeds on the one-mile track, earning it the nickname “The Monster Mile.” It is fiercely known to have destroyed cars and driver’s hopes, an alternate definition of “monster.”

More recent; before Miles the Monster was added.

And for those that forget, this is what it looks like closer to today only it's full of fans.

Dover is one of the few tracks we haven't been to due to the distance and the races running during the school year but we are going to try and make it next year.

My wife, kids & I went there for a long, long time. It's a great place to go. Lot's of stuff to do around the area too.

One of my favorite tracks on TV, never been there Richmond is the furthest track up North for me.

So..... Of course I had to go back and look that race up. Here's some info on that race that I found.

While Richard Petty led the 491 laps as mentioned he was the only one that finished on the lead lap.

2nd place finished 3 laps down (Buddy Baker)

The 3rd place driver, Earl Ross, finished 9 laps down.

Time of the race was 4:23 and over 30,000 were in attendance.

Could you imagine if we saw a race like that today?

i'm glad we don't.

Some of the big upsets
1981 Jody Ridley wins in the Junie Donalevy Truxmore/ Sonny King Ford

Any Ford fans under 30 might enjoy google imaging his old Ford short track cars he was good.

1990 Derrick Cope wins in the Bob Whitcomb Chevrolet

As a old Earnhardt fan I heard a lot people call Derricks Daytona * win a fluke, but he had to be decent to win at Dover.

* Childress says ,"Opportunity meets preparation" and I agree, these two earned their Ws imo.

A two second lead at the finish today pisses the pissers off.

That would be incredibly boring. Glad racing isn't like that today.

Ahhh...when races were won by 3 laps and real men didn't care. Those were the days......

Where are you guys getting this fun facts from? Keep it up.

Nothing like having 1 excellent team, 1 decent team and 40+ guys from the neighborhood battling it out for a championship.

Today all the kids would be asking "What is the point of those other forty guys being out there? "

You guys can replicate lapping the field by playing the NASCAR game.

I used to do just that every time. Specially at Martinsville. :p

Yeah , but they also raced because they loved to race each other . The thirty fifth place driver had a heck of a great day if he usually finished fortieth. It was about the racing .

Too bad TV doesn't show much of that. They seem to be getting better, but for years they didn't know what to do when a guy was leading by half a lap.

Thankfully with a laptop ,you can now keep track of the entire field.
