Drivers Say Engine Cooling During New Qualifying Procedure Is Far Too Dangerous

I have some local short track and rally experience. We should just put bumpers on the car and limit them to 20 mph

Well that just makes you the expert!!!

I'm shocked you aren't on the track out there with these guys on Sunday with that kind of experience.

just saw a report that NASCAR is prohibiting cool down laps but permitting chill boxed via hood openings.

Silly. Sounds like an engineer and machinist job program, but it's better than the old way. A $50 Walmart fan blows air at about 60 mph.

Whining is when you complain about your fries being to cold...this was a little more important then that, so, i wouldn't consider any of the drivers voicing their concerns, whining. " I like your avatar".:)
thanks nitro.. I guess I'm a little perturbed with guys who have made 10, 50, 150 million complaining while younger, eager guys just starting out didn't say anything. I don't see a major difference with cars slowing to green flag pit while others are wide open.. This is racing to me, it's a dangerous sport. I see the NFL slowly getting watered down due to 'safety' and it's ruining the game, I don't want to the see the same happen to nascar

But, what good is a 150 million if you are dead. I did a lot of stupid and unsafe stuff when i was younger also...but as you get older and you see some of your friends die in racing accidents your views tend to change a little;)

Well said. The slow train method was stupid and unsafe. I would be shameful to have an injury or death due to the practice.

Sounds like the problem has been addressed, now they can fix the playoff mess they made and its all good.

I would rather go the no tape route.I would think overheating and cooling that engine a couple times quickly isn't good for it?

Oh well damn, you have local short track and rally experience.

Never mind then.

Lol I'm not that good. In fact, I'm downright terrible, but I still get out there. There is a reason that you used to see very few guys in their 50's and 60's still out there; they had enough sense to get out.

Now it's just endless crying from millionaire drivers who are more concerned about protecting their million dollar paychecks.

Dale Earnhardt pretty much thought that IROC wasnt worth the risk, Wonder what he would have said about the new circus ?? The plan would never have got off the ground if he were still with us I bet

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Associated Press has learned that NASCAR is making changes to qualifying after drivers expressed safety concerns.

During a conference call Tuesday with crew chiefs, NASCAR banned drivers from making cool-down laps following their qualifying attempt. Teams will instead be allowed to hook up cooling units to their engines through hood flaps.

NASCAR this season moved to a new knockout qualifying format widely praised as more entertaining. Drivers say the new rules prohibit cooling the engines on pit road, forcing them to circle the track at slow speeds at the same time other drivers are speeding past during their qualifying attempt. Brian Vickers called it "the most dangerous thing" he's ever done in racing.
Several people who participated in Tuesday's call told the AP that NASCAR initially said teams could use external fans on pit road to cool the engines. But after nearly unanimous objections, NASCAR relented on the use of cooling units.

The people spoke on condition of anonymity because NASCAR has not formally announced the changes.

betcha it ain't hood flaps.
prolly not reported.......on track liability ins. carrier meets w/ nascar on monday ! ha!

w/ newer hi pressure rad coolin systems in use today....motor guys may like ext. kool units as best way ta cool motor down ------vs fans or h2o pump on motor ....etc. ?

Why doesn't running tape free solve part of the problem? I understand the teams don't want to because speed would suffer but why wouldn't that be an option? Remove 10 cents worth of tape and have at it.

The engines are still going to heat soak when they shut them down and the water temp will rise far higher than the running temperature. Running less tape will help but they still need the cool down rig if they are going back on the track

What?! I don't get it... so if a poor guy complains its dangerous then it really is? I must be missing something here.... either this is one of the stupidest things I might have ever heard anyone say on here... or.. well.... naah man that's just a stupid thing to say.

What difference does it make how much money they make? You think it'd be safer to fly by cars at a 150mph difference if they didn't make so much money?

Listening to some of the crew chiefs on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio they thought that the tapeless runs may have been an option but in a collective meeting yesterday with NASCAR it was determined that they would go with what was announced. Some seem to be implying that NASCAR wants the higher speeds with tape so that we can still see track records be broken. Personally, I don't care if someone sets a new track record. That's not the kind of thing that stands out in my memory of any track other than possibly Daytona or Talladega and that's because they were milestones in the sport. The fact that a track record was set last week at Vegas by Logano doesn't really stand out all that much too me.

I kind of enjoy seeing the records being broken, it reassures me that things are moving forward instead of back. It doesnt look too good when the cars were faster 2 years ago then they are now IMO

Word is that FOX was also consulted on the issue and said no to no-tape because Mike Joy, DW, and Larry Mac wouldn't be able to shout "IT'S A NEW. TRACK. RECORD!" in unison half a dozen times every Friday.

I'd bet it does to the drivers though. At least to the record holders. Joeys Michigan record lap became the 9th fastest q lap record speed in NASCAR history. I would think that's gotta be nice to hold a record like that.

Hood flaps?
Nascar once again proving they're cheap bastages. Simply hire more officials so there's one for each pit stall to monitor any unapproved actions under the hood when it's opened for cool down.
Naw, rather have team owners blow a few engines then have da brain part with a single dime.

I know that you and Fender will hold on to that in your Joey centric minds but for many of the rest of us.....

Meh... Still.. my driver is the fastest in NASCAR in 25 years :)
On that track perhaps but don't give your guy that much credit. They run a lot faster @ Texas than they do Vegas. He wouldn't have even started in the top 20 @ Texas with that speed last fall. In the words of the magician/one time broadcaster..... You don't have to look it up because I already did. ;)

For the most part track records are nothing more than a bench mark to hit that is soon forgotten. Nobody remembers that kind of stat without looking it up.

The little ones aren't as big of a deal.... its still nice to be a record holder.. but that Michigan record is a big one.

I think i might have set a world record for hitting the most buffets in 2012...but i haven't received a trophy yet.:D

dpk is right, breaking track records doesn't mater. If records continue to be broken, speeds will eventually get to a point that is too dangerous and a restrictor plate will be needed. The point of qualifying is to set the starting order (and get a spot in the Shootout).

There's a little more to it than that. If not they'd just have teams draw numbers out of a hat for the starting order.

Naturally every driver wants to start as close to the front as possible, so drivers go as fast as possible to get good track position for the start.

That will never change, and track records will continue to fall.
