I dunno if it's talent or interest. Many of the top Indy drivers will run as third and fourth drivers in the IMSA endurance events. Maybe most of them view sprints only as stepping stones, or maybe they just don't like that form of racing.

Speaking of forms of racing, I suspect the D500 being a pack race probably does more to deter outside drivers from entering than any other single factor, including the layout, expense, or overall talent level.

I don't take your biased attempts to undermine the popularity of plate racing seriously myself. It's way more accurate of having more entries than places for the Daytona 500. Nascar isn't kind to teams who don't have charters and have to run open cars also.

It is though. The drivers and teams have said as much. I'll take their opinion on what they deem a crown jewel because they're actually competing in it.

This is the biggest and best point made in this. What any of us think the crown jewels are don't matter. The drivers and teams however, they do decide. If they say its one, its one. We can't argue against what they think.

I don’t know, a lot of people call the championship illegitimate despite drivers clearly being upset when they don’t win it.

Well it's a good thing I never called it that, I just don't think its as impressive as a full season format. But I've in this thread said its legit by the rules they play.

Some of them pay more, some get a lot of publicity. I'm not much on special race tracks myself. Couldn't tell anybody what many "crown jewels"are. It moves the needle for some though.

I don’t see Will Power or Josef Newgarden asking Roger to put them in a Cup Car or Alex Palou trying to line up a ride.

Power had been wanting to drive in any form of NASCAR for years but Roger never let him. Perhaps that’s changed now that he’s part of Spire/TWG.

Newgarden has also wanted to race at Nashville or Bristol in a Cup car. Iirc, he did SRX at the Fairgrounds one time.

I think there’s a delineation between a full time jump and doing a one-off. The money differential between IndyCar and NASCAR made a full time jump a financially wise decision for some. That’s a different can of worms.

We have full time NASCAR Cup guys who trip over themselves to run open wheel sprints and openly fantasize about the Indy 500 but you rarely (if ever) see top level Indy guys running the CARS tour and they rarely fantasize about running the Daytona 500.

Indycar drivers don't run short tracks coming up. No connection to that. They don't have the same mentality. Almost none of them have a vision of Daytona in their heads now because it is well divorced from open wheel ladder stuff and winning it says nothing about your talent.

That's fair, I certainly understand that opinion. I just was looking for away to make them even more special. Paying out more money than the others could also work.
