Goodyear officials have sent the tires that were on Kyle Busch‘s car when it wrecked in Sunday’s Daytona 500 for further testing. Busch lost control, spun and collected several other cars, including Dale Earnhardt Jr., who was leading the race at the time.

On Wednesday morning’s “The Morning Drive” on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, Goodyear director of racing Greg Stucker said Busch’s tires arrived Tuesday at company headquarters in Akron, Ohio.

“Our engineers went over them very thoroughly, just to make sure we didn’t miss anything at the racetrack,” Stucker said. “We feel we didn’t.

“We sent them down to our research facility, where we have forensic specialists if you will, that can really do a deep dive into all the different components, all the different parts of the tire and look at them in a lot more detail than you can visually with electron microscopes and a lot of other different tools they have at their exposure.

“It’s very impressive some of the detail they can go into and we’ll find out as much as we can. That takes a little bit of time to do, but that’s in the works.”

Goodyear engineers also looked at video of Busch’s accident for any other clues.

“We want to see if we can see anything,” Stucker said. “We can look at the attitude of the car, did we see anything come out from under the car that might have indicated he ran over anything or any contact.

“We didn’t see anything there again. The other thing is the spin itself. We look at the way the skid marks come from the tires themselves. A tire that’s deflated makes a different skid mark than a tire that is inflated.”

Goodyear officials paid extra attention to the right rear tire on Busch’s Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota Camry, Stucker said.

“It appears as though the right rear tire was still inflated when Kyle spun, and that’s pretty consistent with the way the tire looked itself,” Stucker said. “The tire was flat-spotted, and normally it won’t flat spot through a tire. It’ll just wear through it.

“So that’s pretty consistent. We’ve also stayed in constant communication with the team, if they’ve discovered anything when they got the car back and trying to look through things. We want to make sure they’re very aware of what our analysis is.

“As soon as we know something, then obviously we’ll make sure the team is very well aware of what the findings were.”

Stucker said Goodyear produced between 3,500 and 4,000 tires that it brought to Daytona for all three major NASCAR series teams: Cup, Xfinity and Camping World Trucks.

Busch’s tire issue was one of only a few during Speedweeks, Stucker said.

“We’re very comfortable with overall how Speedweeks went, it kicked the season off and now we’re off to Atlanta this week,” Stucker said.

Goodyear will return to Daytona in April for a tire test. Goodyear will look at a softer tire, which Daytona 500 race winner Kurt Busch has suggested.

“Daytona was one of those we felt like that it’s starting to lose a little bit of its grip from its repave several years ago,” Stucker said. “So we had on our docket to go back there in April and do some testing.

“In conversation with the garage area, the competition group of the teams and with NASCAR, they’d also look at some different aero packages and configurations. We’re going to do that in April, taking some tires back that give a slight increase in grip and is it possible to marry them with some of the aero changes that NASCAR and teams are looking at and see if we can come up with a little bit different package.”

Goodyear has tire tests scheduled April 4-5 at Michigan and April 25-26 at Indianapolis

Goodyear seems to be saying they can't find evidence of a tire failure, at least not yet, but are still looking. I'm sure Kyle Busch will offer a heartfelt apology to Goodyear if it turns out there was no tire failure...:sarcasm:

Surprised?

No, not really. Goodyear has always stood by their tires, remember 2014 where people were blowing tires left and right? Yeah, Goodyear told them not to and they (teams) still went outside of the recommended parameters.

No reason of speaking of Kyle at this point though, the perks of being a hothead.

Not a requirement.

The discussion is about their race tires.

I don't have Goodyears on my truck (NASCAR fans drive trucks where I'm from...) but one tire malfunction out of all the tires at Daytona wouldn't turn me away from buying them for my next set.

Goodyear hasn't ALWAYS offered an epic tire.
Different drivers and teams have different demands and expectations regarding tire composition. It was a plate race where cars wreck, spew shrapnel and often don't finish.
Plate races should never be used as a yardstick for race tire durability.

nobody in the race had a tire problem other then the 18, I call B S on Kyle.
Maybe the manufacturer has a sense of responsibility ... maybe they actually follow their quality control processes through to the end and search for material or manufacturing defects. This is far from the first time they've taken tires home for that purpose. In fact, they do it all the time.

It's news because the driver talks too much.

So all you guys defending Goodyear have Goodyear tires on your personal cars?

I have always had good luck with Michelin tires on my cars but I wasn't thrilled with the LTX's on the Tundra I owned before my current one.

I think what probably happened was Kyle cut a tire which caused him to spin and it is no more then that. I know Kyle said the tires were crap but I haven't heard why he felt they were crap but maybe it was because they were not run flats. I am not sure why Kyle could not entertain the idea that he ran over something causing the problem.

Tire went down, hmmmmm leaky wheel? Bead? valve stem? valve itself? Crew didnt put enough air in it? I guess the 18 crew just aired it up and threw it on and didnt give it enough time to see if it held air? This jackhole doesnt think before speaking, cause it's never, ever ,ever, ever, ever, his fault. If the 34 car had a tire problem, would goodyear even attempt an evaluation? hell no. Dont waste your time goodyear, its an idiot with the temperament of a spoiled rotten brat.

An on-site evaluation of Kyle's personality by an amateur psychologist isn't part of Goodyear's QA/QC process. Mercifully.

Everyone that's bashing Kyle must not have seen the whole broadcast, because I clearly (Waterford Crystal Clear) remember Mike Joy and DW pointing I out that there may be an issue with the tires because of what they had seen the previous nights. This was early in the race.... before the end of the first segment.

Goodyear didn't seem to think the tire went down....... could it actually be that the very best driver in the world just lost control of his car?

Nah..... ;)

I wonder when they will list the findings for the tire treatment or softners

Was it the : Diesel fuel/ ATF / Paint Reducer blend.

A Tolulene and Goat Piss blend

Or just some other simple alternatives like WD40, Russian imported lead base paint, or something as harsh as Rosie O'Donnell's #1, or the Serena Williams bottled sweat.

Scott Bloomquist's Rapid-Soak.

$39.95 the gallon. No tax.

They may be being "prodded" to do so by kyles ego.
If Goodyear is as protective about their tires in nascar as they are in drag racing then they don't need any prodding. They have guys at the end of the track inspecting our tires after every run, and when their is a blowout they confiscate that tire immediately and take it back to their lab for further inspections.

Reality check.

Thank you, sir.

Is it weird that right before Kyle spun out I thought he was about to spin out? But only because of the way he was driving to get around the cars in front of him?

Something happened to Kyle's car and it happened suddenly. Drivers can tell when a tire is going down and sudden failures are usually from a tire exploding or a suspension failure. Sometimes tires fail because teams set the camber beyond Goodyear's recommendations. I assume the team ruled out suspension issues but I wonder how the resulting crash damage might have disguised the cause. I assume Goodyear and the teams try to learn what causes any failure so they may correct things - they've all been down this road before so I'm a little surprised they haven't discovered the cause yet.

IMO he wore out his greatness and flubbed up. Plain and simple.
btw Didn't Tony trash the Goodyear tires and get fined?
