Today, NASCAR made the questionable move of tossing aside the rule book and penciling Jeff Gordon into a newly created 13th spot in the Chase. But if you think about it, wouldn't it be a PR fiasco for NASCAR if Gordon goes on to win it all? If a guy that has been running mediocre all year gets a Chase spot created especially for him, then all of a sudden comes alive and tears it up in the Chase, you'd need 10,000 sticks to fend off all the conspiracy theorists that would come out of the woodwork. And I'm not talking just about message board people, but national media as well. You have to admit it would look awfully shady to the casual observer.

According to some fans every single one of Gordon's championships are shady, so I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

I think a worse nightmare would be if one of the teams involved with manipulating the outcome of the Richmond race won The Chase. IMO, that would equate to a non-deserved, tarnished win and would bring credibility questions to the sport of NASCAR, similar to the effects of the use of banned substances in MLB.

Tony did the same thing. He had a mediocre season, even said on national TV that he didn't deserve to be in the chase. Low & behold he dominated the final 10. Only exception was he wasn't penciled into the playoffs because some unethical sportsmen decided to cripple the sports integrity.

I'm not among them, but there are some out there that thought Tony's 2011 run to the title was suspicious. If Gordon does something similar, coupled with the way he got into the Chase, it might not look too good.

Go take Tony's third championship away. We all know he barely snuck in two years ago. He was no better than what Gordon has been this year.

This year's chase wa a mockery. If Jimmie, Carl, Matt, or Kyle doesn't win this chase themselves, then whomever wins it has a nice big asterisk next to their names.

For NASCAR's sake, I hope one of those four guys do win it. I'd obviously root for Kyle and Matt first and foremost, but wouldn't have a problem with Jimmie or Carl winning it either.

I just got home and had a plan to start a thread about what a potential fiasco the 2013 nascar cup could (has?) become.

and to be honest, I would take great pleasure if truex won 6 chase races with Gordon taking the points crown by one over newman with bowyer in third by two and logano fourth by three.

at this point, it doesn't matter how it works out. I hated the chase when it started. and the expansion of multi-car race teams opened the door to potential, if not expected, manipulation. even if it had gone on before most of you knew what nascar was. and as a former rules enforcer, I've questioned most of the decisions the governing body has made.

the fact is, and maybe this is what nascar needs to recognize and embrace, it isn't about "crowning a deserving champion".

it's about providing 36 entertaining performances.

What would be the worst travesty in all of Nascar ever and would cause the media, fans and people world wide to revolt and come unglued would be if the "Cheater" that started it all and got away scott free with out even a slap on the wrist, Clint Bowyer, won the chase, they should have kicked his ass out of the chase, In My Opinion and the opinion of every fair minded person I have heard talk about it.

Probably your worst nightmare....but I doubt many of us would lose any sleep

Gordon winning won't be a bad thing but if Joey wins then its a F'ing joke because if Truex ain't let back in then Joey should be thrown the F out.

What is it about "Truex wouldn't have made it in if it weren't for his slimey cohorts at MWR" that you don't understand?
Ask questions and we'll explain it to you.

I'm not gonna lose any sleep either way. Only nightmare for me is that you guys will be like SlicedBread22 w/Logano X100 if Gordon wins the title (no offense, SB22 ;) )

This article from Yahoo Sports pretty much sums up my opinion on the whole 13th spot thing, and is kinda the point I'm trying to make of how the mainstream media will likely view NASCAR if Gordon wins the title this year:

I'm NOT a Gordon fan. I'm a fan of fair play. I'm a fan of fixing a a wrong. The pricks at MWR manipulated an unfair and untrue ending to the last race for the Chase that helped one of their own (Truex) into the chase at the expense of those who deserved it.

Why is that so hard to freakin' understand?

Wait, as if there weren't already credibility questions?

What about consistency by NASCAR if they are going to penalize a team 50 points for teammates helping teammates why would they not penalize a team offering to "help" another team the same thing? Penske paying off Front Row is a whole lot slimmer than Vickers pitting. And you don't know how many spot Joey my have dropped without the 38 being his wing man.

And for the record I like Joey but fair is fair and either he should be out of the Chase or Martin should be added to it.

I really don't care about any of the politics of it. The final word is the final word. Joeys in and will run for a championship and the opinion of the fans doesn't change that. I don't care how it happened... hes in that's the bottom line. I could be staring at concrete evidence he cheated but if NASCAR lets him in I really don't care... it is what it is

The only thing consistent about NASCAR is inconsistency.....lol

I think that's likely true Clutch , Truex is being kept out of the chase as additional punishment to MWR.

I've been reading and reading and reading, ad nauseum ---- NASCAR is going to be damned whatever they do, or don't do.

The fans will never be satisfied. Can you imagine NASCAR run by a committee of fans? We'd still be debating the outcome of the 1959 Daytona 500.
I may not like some decisions NASCAR has made, but it's their playground, so they get to make the rules.

I think Nascar gets into trouble being too fair . And can you imagine ten races from now , people caring how Gordon got into the chase? Most will have forgotten by Monday.

There will always be ppl bitching about who wins the championship... wont change the stat book...
It sure won't be me bitching. Heck, after all the posts that I have read since this all went down I almost forgot who my drivers are. But, if one of my drivers win that would be cool, and if they don't then they can try again next year.

if you read the drivers reactions none of them including jeff gordons teammates think it was the right thing to add a 13th spot to the chase.

Other than hanging Clint Bowyer , what should Nascar have done ? My idea was nothing , but it didn't get much support.

These days I'm pretty laid back. I dont get up on the bed celeebrating every accomplishment Gordon makes. lol Days gone bye.
