But if I still understand this correctly, they still only need a win to get in? Or in Willy B's case he's already in. And folks that's what this system is a joke....

I'd have assumed his first win would have been cucumbered ( ;) ). And even still I'd assume the playoff point he got for that win would be erased? This latest one would count since the correct louvers were used?

HMS f*cked around and now they found out. Now just have to make it to the playoffs where points reset and go from there. The loss of playoff points is going to be a bit difficult imo to make the championship race. Unless Byron continues his tear or Larson goes on one where they can accumulate points in bulk at a quick pace.

The silver lining is the playoff points they lost were the majority of the points that have been given out so far this year. Not many other drivers have any. So yes as long as they continue to perform going forward it shouldn't be too bad imo. Byron is really the one hurt here. He was far clear of the field in that department.

The worst part about this for me as a sideline fan right now is that Jordan Taylor won't get to work with Gustafson at COTA 😔

I mean Byron at +3 in playoff points 4 races into the year is not bad.

NASCAR handed down significant penalties to all four Cup Series teams for Hendrick Motorsports on Wednesday.

For starters, each crew chief for Hendrick Motorsports was fined $100,000 and suspended for four races.

To make matters worse, each team was penalized with the loss of 100 points and 10 playoff points.

The drivers for Hendrick Motorsports involved in this mess are Kyle Larson, Josh Berry, William Byron and Alex Bowman.

As soon as one of them misses the next round by less than 10 points, it's going to look like a huge deal.

From Hendrick Motorsports: We are disappointed with today’s decision by NASCAR to issue penalties and have elected to appeal based on a variety of facts that include: (cont)
Documented inconsistent and unclear communication by the sanctioning body specifically related to louvers (cont)
Recent comparable penalties issued by NASCAR have been related to issues discovered during a post-race inspection

I think its a little excessive for parts they did not qualify or race with
That's the one thing I don't get. These parts were taken for practice. They were not presented for qualifying or inspection. Did they intend on using them? Probably. I just don't see how you can get fined for assumed intent

Can't cucumber the win if they didn't find it in post race teardown

From Hendrick: For the March 19 NASCAR Cup Series event at Atlanta Motor Speedway, our organization has made the strategic decision not to request deferral of personnel suspensions. Team rosters for this weekend will be updated as soon as substitute crew chiefs are determined.

Then how can you penalize someone for an illegal part in practice for a non impound race? I can't say I'm really an HMS fan but this just makes no sense to me. If feel you need to actually use or intend (bring it to race inspection) to be penalized.

So can they go through the hauler and penalize you for any illegal parts they find even if it's not on the car?

Okay, then it constituted an illegal practice session, same as if they'd taken the car to another track on an open weekend.

Ok then penalize them for that. But I'm pretty sure a car has never had to pass tech for am open practice session before?

I don't have the answers. I'm also not on the appeals board and not one of the guys Rick needs to convince. Sawyer is judge, jury, and executioner. If I was him, I'd be giving those louvers the stink-eye too. If they weren't going to be used, why were they there? What possible reason is there for them to even exist?

I would like to know what modifications were made to the parts.
Same. May have sharpened some edges or something like that.

On his podcast, Hamlin seemed to suggest the official touched them and didn't like what he felt/saw but idk if there is any actual truth to that, if he was told that, or what.

As an HMS fan (specifically of Byron and then Larson), I just wonder which car will have to use Jeff Gordon as crew chief this week. :XXROFL:    :sarcasm:

I wonder if it’s possible that could be a blessing in disguise for him.

He still gets quality equipment being HMS but maybe a different crew chief would be more inclined to listen to what he needs in a car as an experienced road racer rather than what he knows works for Chase at road courses. Just a thought

I guess the thing that really hasn't been mentioned is I wonder what 4 guys HMS will dig out to sit on the box? I know suspending a crew chief isn't really a penalty anymore but you still need a puppet to sit on the box

The 9 team used their lead engineer Tom Gray to fill in for Gustafson at Watkins Glen a couple years ago so I imagine you'll probably see that or maybe the car chiefs step in.
