I've been optomistic of this guy's left turn skills ever since I heard he was going stock car racing last year. Especially after his sweet save at Phoenix(I believe during practice?). After today, I'm full-blown on the bandwagon. Other then almost wadding up the whole field falling to the back on lap 1 and the somewhat scared approach to bump drafting, he did amazing during the last 20 laps, high, low, bouncing off Stewart four-wide.. I'm proud of him, he got put into the standard daytona end of race dash and held his own(literally). It's an extremely stacked young crop of drivers but I'm pretty stoked on his early showings.. It's gonna be a hell of a year.

With that said, I'm really thinking heavily about the people injured at the end of it. There's nothing worse than injuries caused by the competition itself. Just thought I'd share my thoughts, haven't seen many feel good posts since the end of that race. Let's not forget it still was one helluva race.

Gotta say, I was waiting all day for that pink and yellow car to be turned around cause it seemed like he was just getting in the way and couldn't find a friend.
But he made us aware he was there.

Helluva race, indeed.

I'm not convinced yet. Look at the number of drivers who have won on plate tracks and done nothing elsewhere.

He appears to have potential but I'll wait to see what he does on the unrestricted tracks, especially the 1.5 milers. In the meantime, he should be popular on scanners! ("Holy crap!")

He did well, we were rooting for him and I think he did well for a rookie. He generally tried to stay out of the way because he knew his limits and was just trying to learn how to run in the draft. No one seemed to really want to hook up with him and draft for too long, couldn't get any help. Despite that he was in a position to win at a few points.

My heart goes out to everyone that got hurt, first post in awhile and ain't commented on that yet. I don't mean to clutter this thread with going into all that. :(

I agree with this, lets see how he can run on those tracks before passing full judgement. But he seems to want to learn and that's what counts. I bet he can pull off some top 10s and maybe a couple of top 5s this season on the 1.5 mile tracks. Now sure if he can do it on a short track but I wouldn't count him out either. :)

I like Travis, what he brings to NASCAR and his determination to succeed. Hopefully he can make steady improvements and make it to Cup in a few years.

Am I the only one that likes the paint job on his car? Reminds me of motor-cross so much and he's easy to pick out in the crowd. :)

I hope he does well on the non-plate tracks. I'm going to try to watch more Nationwide races this year they seem to have gotten a lot of good talent into that series and they run on some cool tracks that the Cup cars don't.

I've always been a huge fan of Pastrana in his motocross/supercross/x-games events and he's just such an easy guy to root for. He's not a corporate robot like some of these other guys and he's very down to earth. I know he will sign autographs for however long it takes for his fans.

I also agree with ya NC Hillbilly about his paint scheme, that's why I liked it as well.

It was a good run. He was never gonna win the race because he was too scared to draft but he had a really fast car. It'll be intresting to watch him this season. He's a name brand so the pressure is on to perform.

Should not have been in this race if he was scared . Try a lower level series and work your way up.

He runs top of the field. And you guys call him Chicken. Have you seen what he's done before nascar?

You might want to take a look before you call him "scared"

It seemed to me the only thing Travis was 'scared' of was ruining someone elses day. He knew his limits and acted responsibly.

I thought he did a pretty good job. He hung out towards the front all day even if others avoided drafting with him.

I agree, at the end there were several times where if someone would have pushed him they could have taken the lead as a pair. It seemed like every time that got going whoever was pushing him would pull out and pass or look for another person to draft with. No one want to go with him.

At one point he got caught in the middle and drove great to avoid causing a wreck and ruining anyone's day. He would drift back and back up to the front. I think he got a good idea about what draft racing was about today and was mostly around the back early on to watch the experienced guys from behind and save his car til the end.

Really fun to see him driving in Nationwide, I hope he does well and moves up to Cup in the next few years. I know one thing, he probably had the time of his life today. Did you guys hear him on the radio?

I don't know if you can ever use the word scared in a Pastrana post. Remember, this is the kid that jumps out of airplanes without a parachute and jumps a tricycle from the top of one highrise building to another.;):)

Every new guy gets the cold shoulder from the regulars, especially on RP tracks. Except Bayne. Most good RP drivers tend to stay away from doing the tandem with other good RP drivers at the end of these races because they want to work with someone they can beat. A driver good enough not to wreck them, but not good enough to make that winning move is why you see Tony being pushed by guys like Hornish.

Oh yea I totally understand, I'd be iffy about trying to make a run with a rookie too. I'm just saying if someone would have taken the gamble they could have gone to the front with him. His car was a hot rod in the draft and was even holding its own by itself at a few points. :)

Also, leaving him to pinball up near the front isn't a good idea either. Someone definitely should've definitely hooked up and drafted with him.

Yea, that led to him having to do some tricky driving while 3-wide. Was impressed with how well he handled that, even made a charge back to the front iirc.

I think a lot of those guys were trying to hook up with teammates too. If not for the tandem drafting maybe we would have had more luck finding a partner...who knows.

At the very least they should have pushed him up enough so he could pull down or up the track to get out of the way if he wanted. He really had no option but to go forward, but at that point I'm pretty sure he was racing for a top 10 anyway.

Looking forward to seeing what he can do over the coming weeks.

I suppose 'scared' was the wrong word, should have gone with 'apprehensive'. For those that haven't been paying attention to his racing last year, he ran solidly top 10 in alot of races, finished on the lead lap in 17th in his 2nd race at Darlington, barely missed the top 10 at Indianapolis, fastest in practice and qualified top 5 at Richmond.. I personally was more skeptical of his RP racing then any short tracks or 1.5 milers. I think he is gonna surprise some people. Thanks for the responses!

I would love to see him run good this year.:)

Scared in the sense that he obviously had a fast car but since he didn't want to get close to draft, he chose not to. its the difference between winning the race and just finishing it.

Good thread Dun24 , welcome to the forum. My grandson is a Travis fan , now he wants to watch the race with me . Well done Nascar.

I think the difference is that in those activities, he's the only one affected if he screws up. I don't think he's scared of the draft as much as not wanting to make a rookie mistake that affects others. I think he drove a smart race within his existing limits, gained some experience, and maybe showed some of the other drivers that he's not going to be a hazard.

Okay Okay , So scared was not the best choice for my weekly vocabulary lesson . How about he was timid in the car due to the lack of seat time he has had and feared he just might be the instigator of one big pile of sheet metal.

I do think he will be a good driver, his resume is impressive.

I have been impressed with his performance so far. If I had to bet on him winning this year or not, I would bet on a win.

If he can pull in a good sponsor and keep them, while at the same time develop his driving skills and place well, he has a good chance of making it. He has the equipment.

I believe that he brought sponsors with him to Nascar.

He wears his Red Bull helmet when he drives but I don't know if RB pays Jack.

He gave a good interview today on ESPN. Even though it was 2 in the morning. What a waste. So is that Nicole Skankski or whatever her name is. It's like "DAMN GIRL" :bleh:

Yeah, a personal sponsor that's been with him forever.. I'm pretty sure they endorsed parachuting parachuteless haha

My GF's Son is the Red Bull liason with/for Travis.

Red Bull spends money on all sorts of wacky stuff - including the space jump.

Travis wears RB on his helmet but as for now anyway, not on the car.

Nicole Mansky married the Indycar Driver Ryan Briscoe, so now she is Nicole Briscoe.
She's better than some. She previously did the hosting of a NASCAR show on SPEED. I can't remember the name of it.
I liked her better before she went blonde...

I like her voice myself, and she seems to have a sense of humor. not to mention easy on the eyes. ;)

Well any who, back on topic. I wasn't impressed with Travis at Phoenix. Granted he has a whole lot to learn to be a driver. Just because you are second to Danica in popular "tweets" might be good for tv ratings, but it isn't paying the car people's bills. He might do better in the dirt arena, driving a four wheeler. A lot closer to where he came from. Never know though he might do ok.
