Oh, if only GM had lifted their official ban on corporate racing support in that era, we could have had a fleet of cars like this 65 Impala taking on the Fords and Mopars. Bunkie Knudsen semi-openly flaunted that ban in the early 60's leading to dominate Pontiacs in 1961 and 62. The 63 Chevy "mystery motor" 427 cars were another backdoor effort that GM firmly put their foot down on shortly after the first batch of engines were built. The Corvette Grand Sport program that COULD have taken the fight to the Cobras also died in this crackdown after only 5 cars were built, always consigning these cars to non "production" classes, while Shelby's beer cans with engines humbled Corvettes that were "real" road going automobiles.
