Hurricane Sandy

I've really got to pick a bone with the media. This has been, without a doubt, the worst coverage of a major news event ever. The mainstream media and the politicos can't see outside of the election for some reason.

Reality: Dozens of people are dead (and the death toll is rising), millions are without power and thousands have been displaced.

Media: The top story this hour, what impact does Hurricane Sandy have on Mitt Romney's campaign?

Reality: The worst disaster since Hurricane Katrina.

Media: Governor Romney said last week that (blah blah).

The rest of this rant is for The Podium.

Where is our favorite FenderBumper at anyways? It's not the same without him here. I need someone to get in a pissfest with.

In all seriousness, I hope he's alright. NYC and NJ got Katrina-level devastation.

My GD is going to school at NYU. She sent me one text to let us know that she is ok. No more texts will be coming though as she is without power and needs to save the cell phone for emergencies. I get tears when I see the devastation caused by this storm....it is so widespread.

I have another GD who lives a little north of Frederick, MD. she lives in a small one story house and a huge tree came down about two feet from her bedroom. She is extremely lucky.

Al Sharpton and Jessie Jackass will be along soon to offer disaster assistance.
Kidding aside, I hope everyone's ok.

Our son lives near Belvidere, and has a business in Hackettstown, Warren County, NJ. This area was originally expected to receive the major thrust of the storm. He called Sunday night and sounded relieved saying weather reports indicated less rain than originally predicted, about 3 to 3.5 inches and the path of the hurricane slightly to the south taking them out of the eye of the storm but sustained high winds predicted.
He called yesterday morning but his cell phone was breaking up and all we heard was they were alright but stranded on the mountaintop where he lives which is rural and power lines are on poles. He reported trees down all over and roads inaccessible. He called later to say he managed to get to his business, normally a 7 mile drive but dodging downed trees and debris, took him more than over 20 miles. The business property was okay but the town of Hackettstown was shut down. No major flooding and heavy tree damage from broken limbs and trees split but not uprooted. According to early estimates in Sussex and Warren Counties, power could be lost for as long as two weeks in some areas.

On the other side of the world, that is New York City, I have a sister living in an apartment building on Washington Square but have not heard from her. My other sister lives off Fort Hamilton Pkwy., Brooklyn - near Maimonides Hospital - and she is okay but offered no details other than no power. She is saving cell phone power.

Glad to hear your son is OK, and 1 sister. Hope you hear from the other sister, soon.

All of my 'net friends on the East Coast have checked in, however briefly. We still haven't heard from FenderBumper, though.

My brother lives north of Boston, he lost power Sunday night. But he lives in a area where every squirrel owns 4 or 5 trees and there's lotsa squirrels! Wind took a lot of limbs and trees down. Because he's in a remote area and the need for crews is elsewhere it'll be at least a week before crews restore his power. He's heading down now to 'borrow' my generator.
One thing for sure, there won't be a shortage of firewood next year!

I spoke too soon. GD just called us on her cell phone. She has been without "power' and is cold and has been living in the dark with no lights or heat in her dorm at NYU. She is now on a bus to New Jersey to stay with her other grandmother until Monday. She really didn't sound too good as she now has a cold on top of it. She has little idea of the devastation as she has been without TV.

NYU closed down her dorm and several others and they are trying to consolidate into several other buildings. Students that have a way of leaving are doing so. GD took a local bus to the station where she caught another bus to NJ. I feel terrible as I am too far away to help.

I havent heard anything from the local HAM clubs here, but I'm sure there are flocks of them headed that way. HAM is the best way to communicate when cell lines are down since we can reflect off the ionosphere.

I see the media has now shifted focus to assigning blame instead of actually doing something to help people.

Explain, please. Who is the media blaming and what examples can be cited of them shifting focus and not giving information on how to help people. I haven't seen that in NC print media nor on world news broadcasting.

New York's Governor brought up Climate Change and the media reported on it.

Certainly. I'm not saying that they're blaming anyone but looking to place blame. Their 2nd question to most people seems to be "could this have been handled better" or " were they not prepared". I just don't see how that helps at this point.

Perhaps it's coincidental, but I find it rather amusing that I know a Katrina and a Sandy, both of which are best described as bitches.

I was just listening to one of the news channels --- which one, I don't know, don't care. Anyway, they were talking to a woman who lives on Staten Island. She said nobody gave them any warning about the storm surge. I knew a flipping week ago the storm was going to be bad --- was she under a rock? People who live close to open water have to take responsibility for informing themselves. I grew up in Houston --- you ALWAYS assumed the worst could happen, and prepared for it.

Wow! Jeez, everyone, and I mean everyone living just about anywhere in the US knew the storm surge was going to be bad, days in advance.

For those who care, I'm finally back on the grid after no power, cable, internet and land line since Monday afternoon. Thank goodness for the generator, camper, and cell phone.

Welcome back! I didn't realize you in the middle of that storm. Glad to hear you're okay and made it through.

He hasn't been heard from since this post. Hopefully safe and waiting to get back to normal.

Me too. I was hoping Danica would wreck this weekend cause you can usually hear him yell "YIPPIE" no matter where you're at:D Hope him and his family is okay and we hear from him soon.

Thanks guys, I just got the internet back today and still have no cell phone service so is the first time I've been able to sign on here.

I didn't have any real damage, just some neighbors trees that fell in the street. I really lucked out in this storm with no damage. I live on a hill so I wasn't worried about the water(if I had water rising to my house level then majority of Staten Island would have been completely under water.

I'm only 5 minutes away from where tons of damage was done along the water. There were tons of boats and cars all over the streets. It's been like a scene out of a movie.

Sadly, I have some friends who lost everything. Some lost all of their belongings because the water was over 5 feet inside their homes, some don't even have a house left standing anymore. Staten Island as a whole got really ignored by the city and the Red Cross. Their responses to the devastation here was pathetic.

It's been a really crazy week and as much as I enjoy watching Danica fail at NASCAR I haven't had much interest in the races because of what has happened. I still have them on my DVR but I won't be watching them anytime soon.

Really appreciate you guys worrying about me and I hope all of you made it safely through this one if you were near it.

My friends sister also lost everything they own, I know theres always people asking for donations but if anyone can spare a few bucks for them they would greatly appreciate it. The link is here www.gofundme.com/gambarofamilydonations

Glad to hear from you SHG Racing.Nice to hear all you really lost was power.Sorry to hear about your friends.

So glad you made it through, and so aorry to hear about your friends.
Take it from someone who's been through a few of these, things will improve --- not as fast as you'd like, but they will improve.

Thanks, and it's going to be interesting to see what comes out of this cause there have been talks that they aren't going to let people rebuild in some of these areas. There are also tons of homes that haven't even been inspected yet that may have to be condemned.

Glad to hear from you SHG Racing.Nice to hear all you really lost was power.Sorry to hear about your friends.

Thanks, and ya I have no business complaining about losing power for a bit after seeing what everyone else is going through. Tons of people down at the Jersey shore(including my girlfriends grandma) lost their homes. The destruction all over here is really amazing. I honestly didn't think it was going to be this bad. Sadly, I was wrong.
