If Carl Edwards didn't retire...

Wasn't really that wow. Kyle ran him down then couldn't get to his bumper. Was more so aero and tirewear.

Regardless, this thread is about Carl, not Truex.

You said Carl would be Toyotas #2 and I disagreed.

Carl looked better in a Ford and I'm a Chevy guy.

Carl saw the writing on the wall...the sport in general was trending towards WWE, geared towards media hype being more predominate than the skill of the driver. Part of that had to do with the rush towards having the next shiny object (young drivers) while the pressure for reduced compensation took away the incentives. It is no longer the goal to crush all, in the quest of the gold challis, as it was in the Knight's of yore. Participation trophy's for all and the most popular of the hour wins the bonus ribbon

If Carl Edwards hadn't retired, we'd still be hearing about him on Fox races several dozen times a race weekend with Jamie Little chasing him around. :D

Maybe one day Cousin Carl will write a book and put in the book the reason(s) why he walked away, I believe it was Gibbs not too long ago said that we will probably never know why Carl left.

As for the what if game, who knows because he retired.

Didn’t he get boned by NASCAR at Homestead?

Dylan Lupton phantom smoke caution for an engine blowup that was a tire rub.
Dylan Lupton spun out in front of traffic. That's gonna bring out a yellow flag every time (unless it happens on the last lap). It turned out that he got to the bottom, out of the racing groove, but the caution was already out... as it should have been to avoid a spin turning into a huge collision. Frankly, I'm tired of armchair experts complaining about every damn caution that isn't for The Big One at Talladega.

But this thread is hilarious... reviving so many conspiracy theories... Carl was disgusted with the rules... hosed at Homestead... ha ha ha. I'm surprised we haven't gotten the one about Daniel Suarez' father paying Cousin Carl $38 million to walk away.

I believe what Carl Edwards said about why he was quitting... he was burned out, had enough money and enough trophies, and wanted to do other stuff. Why is that hard to believe?

I never see Lupton spin out, unless there's another replay somewhere?

It starts at 3:09:52 then radio goes "blown up" followed by "hell of a save" far off replay 3:11:21... shows his left rear go down, gets loose chases it up the track, saves it, and drops to the bottom with a smoke tire rub.

Purely my opinion, but this should be and usually is a standard no caution, unless you shred tire carcass debris everywhere, which I didn't see. I think more likely NASCAR saw smoke and thought fluid on track, or were hankering to throw it. 15 to go with Championship on the line under green, it's very possible Carl watched this replay and added it to his laundry list of factors in deciding to hang it up on pursuit of a Championship determined by 1 race. Can't say that I blame him.

I don't find it hard to believe that he had other bigger reasons for leaving that would justify his decision.

Carl would be getting close to retirement age now (40). Drivers tend to slow down after a serious accident (I don't know if he had a scare) and they tend to slow down when family or personal health becomes more important. Like many jobs, after a decade of doing the same thing a driver might become a little more complacent and loose a tenth or two. At some point age automatically slows you down.

Most drivers are pushed out of NASCAR when they can no longer can get a ride. Carl left for his own reasons which is rare for a race car driver.

I've wondered how a driver adjusts to civilian life when they no longer can run full throttle competing with their colleagues. I imagine "retiring" in your 40s might be hard to accept if you only know racing.

Doubt that. Martin has had 4 wins, 8 wins, 4 wins, 4 wins (still time left in 2019) since getting Gibbs equipment. Carl had 2 wins and 3 wins and really kinda lucked his way into Homestead in 2016.

Sorry I just don't buy the Carl JGR koolaid like everyone else. He probably deserved a title after some of his runs at Roush though.

There is a lot of people that don't give Martin the credit he deserves IMO.

I forgot about that 8 win season by Truex. Guy was on it that year
