If I could turn back time

Almost everyone posting is being so good to fury. If nascar were hosting the forum there would be screams about how nascar doesn't give a hoot or that they planned this 'phantom crash' to create drama or to manipulate the outcome. If joey logano hosted the forum we would be in the middle of a full uproar.

ya dude Id do your homework....

Alright alright just a bit of sarcasm. I never bashed fury guys. I too appreciate this great, small, and ad-free comunity. Cheers to Fury and everyone who makes this possible:)

So Wednesday morning, April 6th, 2016 at just before 9 am, I saw some chatter among my company's chat that said "hey, the server seems broken". Since there's usually something wonky and we're kind of a casual "sh!t's on fire yo" sort of operation, that didn't alarm me until about an hour or two later when somebody at the datacenter looked at the server for me and saw a bunch of hard drive errors. I got there that afternoon to confirm and investigate. Uhh, yep, really broken. So, long story short, all the data on that drive is gone, and it contained about 6 sites' data, including this one. Here's the part where I really messed up - I haven't been keeping regular backups of everything. Latest I had was from when the site was moved over from an old server last year, which is March 2015. Some of my sites are just completely gone, I'm thankful I still had this copy of this one...

Data recovery guys tried everything they could but could not recover anything from the drive.

Just going to make one thing clear: this will never happen again. I should have had more respect for all of your time and effort in making this community the great thing that it is. Shame on me to brush off something as important as backing up. A simple set-it-and-forget-it database dump/download every so often would've turned this total disaster--that took us down for 2 weeks and lost all this data--into a minor few-hour inconvenience. I probably could've pulled the trigger on putting up this old copy of the site sooner, but I was holding out hope that they'd recover the data.

Speaking of simple set-it-and-forget-it backups, I will now be setting that up. I'll have at least 6 copies among 3 different places, as well as a cloud backup solution yet to be determined. I repeat, this will never happen again.

Anyone who donated to the recovery fund, expect to see your money back within a few days.

I've beaten myself up probably more than enough, now it's your turn to beat me up. :beerbang:

I appreciate everything you do and all the hard work and effort you put into getting things back up and running. If someone even thought of beating you up about this they would be a very ungrateful and selfish person.

I'll just throw out that flurf was going to try and pay for the repairs himself until a few people told him to stop the foolishness and accept help. I don't know at the moment who's footing the bill for the replacement drives and set up. As for beating him up .... spare the rod, spoil the child. Besides, if we don't spank him, he'll spend the next year beating himself up over it. If we do it, when we're done, he'll feel he's paid up and able to move on. I'd be a very ungrateful person to let him do that to himself.

Thanks for all the efforts, @fury.

Now, can I have my screen name back? Please......
I like burnper better. You should keep it. ;)

Thanks to @fury for everything. Being down for 2 weeks is a great reminder of how fortunate we all are.

And keep my small contribution, please. I'm sure there were expenses.

YEP. I saw that and responded on my first foray into the world of the twitter bird. Which I am no longer monitoring. I was following 6 of you that kept me abreast of the situation. No one is completely self sufficient 100% of the time, so sayeth the Gator.

Been having some trouble with Tapatalk @fury will it come right? Here's a screenshot of what I get.
And I'm with Aunty and Bobby please keep my small contribution to costs.

No use crying over spilt milk. It could be a lot worse. Like spilt beer.

But seriously thanks for getting us running again.

Geez, @fury just glad we are back. No worries. Two TRD powered Toyota wins without this place bummed me out....but we are back, and my Toyotas still won!!!!! Getcha some of that!!!!! Hell yes!!!!!!!

It's all good Fury. I'm just glad to have it back up and running. Thanks for getting it back up! If we were in the same place I'd buy you a nice cold one to say thanks.

By the way, if I could turn back time, I'd use it for something much more selfish than you would apparently.

I'm getting the same thing, which sucks because Tapatalk was the only way I accessed the site prior to The Incident. I'm sure fury has bigger fish to fry at the moment, though.

Oh yes. Delete the posts (and there were more than one) that don't worship the site failure. Not surprised. And this will get deleted too because reality isn't ok here.

I'm not sure what you are referring to. Not one post has been removed from this thread.

You have a bad habit of posting rather obnoxious comments --- about members of the forum --- and yes, those will be removed.

Now that is just factually incorrect. I wasn't disrespectful and stated facts. Just like 2 other members. Since those facts were not in worship - those posts were removed.

We're not worshiping --- we're just happy to have our forum back.
Yes, fury screwed up by not having current back-up --- if you knew him as well as some do, he's beating himself up over it far worse than
any of us could ever do.
It was a huge mistake, but I doubt it will ever happen again. Pick up and move on --- as someone said, it's like having a fire -- yes, we lost
a lot, but we're still here and will rebuild.

Well, no .. I could do a better job of it, but then I've far more experience at tarring people over backup mistakes. I could tell stories, but the US suicide rate is already hitting new highs. Those folks, however, were business people with business data. Not volunteers who have to cover the bills for other people's hobbies out of their own pockets most months.

That said .. I'm sure if someone else wanted to volunteer the time, space and bandwidth to provide offline backups, Flurf would probably listen to the offer. Then we could have two people to attack for not paying enough attention to maintaining our virtual lifestyles.

Some people are not nice. I think some people would criticize a fireman who broke a vase in their house trying to put out a fire...with them trapped inside

What it all boils down to this is an Internet message board that is on its third owner. It has been a haven for many of us for a long time. In that time we have been given a place to laugh, cry, fight and enjoy a sport we all love. So we lost some posts, big deal, we're back up and fury has been kind enough to bring this place back to us. If you think you can do better go ahead and start your own board. It ain't no picnic and it will be dead within a year. The only one I will not include in this is Professur, he and fury have a relationship off this board. What he says is between those two. So start posting and quit whining.
